They examine how walls and deposits relate, study suitable materials such as charcoal or timber, and compare those findings with historical evidence. To identify buildings, they interpret foundations, room layouts, entrances, and other physical clues; a label such as “church” or “cloister” may remain tentative.
How can archaeologists tell what each building was for?
They start with the physical remains: foundations, wall lines, doorways, room divisions, floor levels, and the joins between sections of masonry. These features can show how spaces were arranged and how a complex changed over time. Excavation may also expose buried foundations or basements that are no longer visible above ground.

Function is an interpretation, not a label that can always be read directly from a ruin. Archaeologists weigh the structure’s layout and its relationship to other remains, then explain which evidence supports a proposed use and how certain that identification is.
Examples of identification—and uncertainty
At Łekno in central Poland, excavators identified remains of a Romanesque rotunda and a Cistercian monastery, including an oratory, church, and abbot’s house. At Thame Park, surviving north and south ranges flank an open courtyard; the Archaeology Data Service/Vernacular Architecture Group record says the courtyard may represent the monastic cloister, rather than presenting that identification as certain. The Łekno study and the Thame Park record show why physical arrangement and qualified interpretation matter.

Why interpretations can change
Later work can revise earlier claims when archaeologists reassess excavation records or reinterpret the remains. The University of Reading’s Glastonbury Abbey project reports reassessing the excavation archive and challenging some previous claims about structures and site history.
How do archaeologists know how old a monastery is?
They establish a chronology for individual structures and phases, combining the order of deposits and walls with material evidence, scientific dating where suitable samples survive, and documentary context. A result applies first to the material tested; researchers then assess how securely that material relates to a particular construction or use phase. A monastery may have been built, altered, and reused over centuries, so its buildings need not share one date.

Stratigraphy and the order of construction
Stratigraphy is the study of relationships among deposits and structures. For example, a wall that cuts through an earlier deposit must postdate that deposit; a wall joined differently to an existing one may indicate a later building phase. These relationships usually establish relative order, not calendar years.
At Łekno, structural and stratigraphic work had already indicated that the rotunda and monastery buildings were constructed in sequence. Radiocarbon results were then used to test and refine the chronology of those separate phases. The published study describes how the different lines of evidence fit together.

Radiocarbon dating: dating the sample, then assessing its context
Radiocarbon dating can help when formerly living material is suitable for testing and securely connected to the event being investigated. At Łekno, researchers dated small charcoal fragments retrieved from calcareous and gypsum mortar. They interpreted the charcoal as fuel used in firing incorporated during mortar production. Most of the resulting dates formed groups supporting construction in separate periods and agreed with constraints from historical sources.
This example does not mean that any charcoal found near a wall dates its construction. The sample’s origin and association with the building phase matter, as do the interpretation and chronological modelling of the result. Dendrochronology: reading timber growth rings
Dendrochronology compares annual tree-ring patterns in timber with dated reference sequences. If a timber preserves enough suitable rings and its context is understood, the result can provide a felling date or range that helps constrain building work. But the tree’s date is not automatically the date when every structure containing that timber was built: wood may have been reused or installed after felling. Historic England describes dendrochronology as a principal scientific dating technique for historic buildings in its scientific-dating guidance.
Site-specific results illustrate the form these findings can take. The Thame Park record reports a felling-date range of 1152–1187 for a medieval roof, with a short date of 1167 and an uncertainty range stated in the record. At Saint-Germain d’Auxerre, the French Ministry of Culture says dendrochronological analysis of oak architraves from the crypt identified trees felled between 820 and 855; the ministry says this supports construction of the crypt in Conrad’s time. Neither result should be transferred to another monastery. See the Thame Park record and the French Ministry of Culture’s account of the Saint-Germain crypt.

When reading an archaeological claim, distinguish the observation from the interpretation. A tested sample, a wall relationship, or a surviving floor is an observation; connecting it to a construction date or naming a room’s function requires an explanation of context.
- What was actually dated? Radiocarbon dates the tested organic material. Tree-ring analysis dates timber growth and may identify felling. Stratigraphy establishes relationships and sequence.
- How securely is it connected to the building phase? The sample’s location and the reason for associating it with construction or use affect what can be inferred.
- What result and uncertainty were reported? Preserve a published range or modelled date range rather than turning it into a falsely exact year.
- What other explanations remain possible? Reused timber, later alterations, disturbed deposits, or uncertain function can affect an interpretation.
Confidence is strongest when independent evidence agrees and each line of evidence has a sound context. At Łekno, radiocarbon date groups agreed with historical constraints and with the structural and stratigraphic sequence. Agreement supports the interpretation; it does not remove the need to account for uncertainty.
