Apple Pencil pressure sensitivity and tilt are two separate drawing inputs: pressure responds to how firmly you press, while tilt responds to the Pencil’s angle. A harder press can darken a line on supported models; tilting can add shading or change line thickness, depending on the drawing tool. Apple Pencil Pro and earlier first- and second-generation models support pressure and tilt. Apple Pencil (USB-C) supports tilt, but not pressure sensitivity.
What does Apple Pencil pressure sensitivity do?
On a pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil, the iPad can respond to how firmly you press the tip against the screen. Apple’s drawing guide gives darkening a line as an example: pressing more firmly can make the mark darker. The precise result depends on the app and the selected tool; Apple does not specify a numeric pressure curve or a universal set of pressure levels.

Pressure matters when you want strokes whose appearance changes with the force of your hand, such as expressive sketching or varying a mark while drawing. If you mainly take notes or annotate documents, pressure response may not be a deciding feature.

What does Apple Pencil tilt do?
Tilt refers to the Pencil’s angle as you draw. In tools that support it, changing that angle can apply shading or vary line thickness. The effect is determined by the drawing tool, so tilt will not necessarily change every brush or mark in the same way. Apple describes some supported hover tools as previewing changes based on tilt and azimuth before the Pencil touches the display. Apple’s iPad drawing guide explains these tool-dependent effects.

- WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)
Does Apple Pencil (USB-C) have pressure sensitivity?
No. Apple Pencil (USB-C) supports tilt but does not support pressure sensitivity. You can still use it for notes, markup and supported tilt-based drawing effects, but it will not provide pressure-responsive strokes. If pressure response is important for drawing, choose a compatible pressure-sensitive Pencil instead.

How are hover and barrel roll different?
Hover previews before contact
Hover is an on-screen preview interaction available with supported combinations of Pencil, iPad and app. It can show where the Pencil will touch down or preview a tool or control before you make a mark. Because the Pencil has not touched the display, hover is not pressure sensitivity.
Barrel roll rotates a shaped tool
Apple Pencil Pro’s barrel roll detects rotation of the Pencil’s barrel, allowing the orientation of supported shaped tools to change. Apple gives a fountain pen and highlighter as examples, and support can vary in third-party apps. Barrel roll is separate from both pressure and tilt.

Does pressure sensitivity work in every app?
No universal behavior is guaranteed. The app and the active tool determine how pressure and tilt affect a mark, and Apple describes tilt effects as dependent on the drawing tool. Some apps or tools may not use these inputs in the same way—or at all. Check the app’s own tool documentation if you need a particular brush or workflow.

Feature support on a Pencil does not mean that Pencil works with every iPad. Apple Pencil Pro is listed for specific iPad Pro M4/M5, iPad Air M2/M3/M4 and iPad mini (A17 Pro) models, and requires iPadOS 17.5 or later. Apple Pencil (USB-C) covers a different, broader set of iPads and requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later. These requirements are tied to Apple’s compatibility listing, which can change as devices and software are updated.
