A Matter accessory that uses Wi-Fi does not need Thread; one that uses Thread needs access to a compatible Thread network. An iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, but hub-backed functions such as automations and remote access have separate requirements.
How do Matter and Thread work with Apple Home?
Matter provides a shared smart-home language that lets compatible accessories work with multiple ecosystems. Thread is a low-power IP mesh network; it is not an alternative to Matter. A Matter accessory can communicate over Wi-Fi or Thread, among other possible transports. Apple explains the distinction in its Matter support documentation and ThreadNetwork documentation.

In a Thread mesh, devices can forward packets for one another. A Thread border router connects that mesh to the home’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet IP network. The border router is a networking role; it does not replace Matter or guarantee that every optional accessory feature is available in Apple Home.
- Matter over Wi-Fi: The accessory uses Wi-Fi, so a Thread network is not required for its connection.
- Matter over Thread: The accessory needs access to a compatible Thread network. Apple Thread-capable hardware or a compatible third-party Thread border router can provide that network connection.
Once added, supported Matter functions can appear in Apple Home and may also be available through Siri, Control Center, or compatible HomeKit apps. What you can control depends on the accessory’s implemented features and how those features are exposed to Apple Home.

Do I need a HomePod or Apple TV for Matter?
Not necessarily. Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in Home without a home hub. That local phone capability is not the same as a permanently available home hub: Apple identifies a home hub as the route to automations, notifications, remote control, and sharing accessory control. See Apple’s Matter pairing and management guidance and home hub setup guidance.
Thread adds a separate requirement. A Thread accessory needs a Thread network. Apple documents a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible third-party Thread border router for Thread-based home features such as automations, notifications, and remote control. Supported iPhones can also pair and manage certain Thread accessories locally, but that does not make the phone a permanent Thread home hub. Apple’s Thread network alert guidance describes the local iPhone path and hub-backed features.

How do I add a Matter accessory to Apple Home?
Add a new accessory
- Power the accessory and follow its manufacturer’s setup instructions.
- Open the Home app, choose Add Accessory, then scan the Matter setup code or follow the pairing option shown on screen.
- Review the permission request and complete the on-screen setup. iOS handles Matter commissioning and, after authorization, supplies the appropriate Wi-Fi or Thread network credentials.
Apple describes this flow in Set up accessories with Home on iPhone and its Matter developer documentation.
Add an accessory already paired in another app
- In Home, choose Add Accessory, then More options, and select the previously paired Matter accessory if it appears.
- If prompted, open the accessory’s existing app and generate or retrieve a pairing code there.
- Enter or scan that code in Home and follow the remaining setup prompts.
Matter’s multi-admin approach allows a compatible accessory to be shared with another ecosystem while retaining its existing pairing. Apple says Matter pairings sync through iCloud Keychain and can be reviewed at Settings > General > Matter Accessories. See Apple’s Matter accessory management instructions.

Which Matter accessories work with Apple Home?
Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance lists these Matter accessory categories:
- Air purifiers
- Blinds and shades
- Bridges
- Fans
- Lights
- Locks
- Outlets
- Robot vacuum cleaners
- Sensors for air quality, ambient light, contact, humidity, motion, and temperature
- Switches
- Thermostats
Apple says products using its badge must be CSA Matter-certified in a category Apple Home supports and pass CSA interoperability testing. A Matter label is not a promise that every optional function works identically in every ecosystem. Check the product’s exact supported functions, Matter certification, transport (Wi-Fi or Thread), required Apple software version, and any hub or border-router requirement. For Thread devices, also check the manufacturer’s instructions for local iPhone pairing support. Apple’s badge guidance sets out its category and compatibility conditions.
What should I check if setup fails?
- Identify the transport: Find out whether the accessory uses Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread. A Thread device cannot join merely because the home has Wi-Fi; it needs a compatible Thread network.
- Check the Apple hardware precisely: Confirm the HomePod or Apple TV generation and, for Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), whether it is the Wi-Fi + Ethernet variant. Do not assume every model has Thread.
- Separate local control from hub features: A supported iPhone may handle local pairing and control, while automations, notifications, and remote access may require a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible third-party border router.
- Use the accessory’s own instructions: For an accessory already commissioned elsewhere, its app may be needed to create the additional Matter pairing code.
- Check software and product capability: Verify iOS and accessory firmware requirements, and confirm that the specific function you want is exposed to Apple Home.
Apple’s Thread alert article is useful for identifying Thread-capable hardware, while its Matter management guidance covers pairings and hub-free use.
