Apollo 7, launched on October 11, 1968, was the first crewed Apollo mission actually flown, testing its Command and Service Modules in Earth orbit. Apollo 8 followed in December, carrying a crew around the Moon for the first crewed lunar-orbit mission. The three names mark different steps in Apollo’s early crewed program: a fatal setback, a return to flight, and a journey to lunar orbit.
At a glance: three missions, three different outcomes
| Mission | What happened | Where it went | Primary purpose | Launch vehicle | Crew |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo 1 | Planned crewed mission; fatal preflight-test fire before launch | Never flew | Planned Earth-orbit test of the Block I Command and Service Modules | Planned Saturn IB | Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward White, Roger Chaffee |
| Apollo 7 | First crewed Apollo mission flown | Earth orbit | Test the crewed Command and Service Modules, systems, mission support, and rendezvous procedures | Saturn IB | Walter M. “Wally” Schirra Jr., Donn F. Eisele, R. Walter Cunningham |
| Apollo 8 | First crewed mission to orbit the Moon | Lunar orbit and return to Earth | Demonstrate crewed lunar-orbit flight and operations | Saturn V | Frank Borman, James Lovell, William Anders |
The most important distinction is that Apollo 1 was a mission designation for a flight that did not happen. Apollo 7 and Apollo 8 were flown missions, but they were not doing the same job: Apollo 7 tested the spacecraft close to Earth, while Apollo 8 took it to the Moon and back without attempting a landing.

Apollo 1: a planned flight halted before launch
Grissom, White, and Chaffee were inside the command module at Cape Kennedy on January 27, 1967, conducting a preflight test. A fire broke out, and all three astronauts died. The spacecraft never launched. The planned flight had been intended as the first crewed Apollo mission, but the accident stopped the program’s first crewed flight before it could begin.

Apollo 1 was planned as a Block I Command and Service Module test in Earth orbit. NASA described the intended mission as 14 days long, but that duration belongs only to the plan: there was no Apollo 1 flight and no time spent in orbit. The designation Apollo 1 was applied to the mission after the accident.

The tragedy mattered to the later missions because the command module that Apollo crews would fly had to be investigated and substantially reworked. NASA’s post-accident changes included an outward-opening unified hatch and reducing flammable materials. The cabin-atmosphere procedures also changed: during countdown, the cabin mixture was maintained at 65% oxygen and 35% nitrogen at sea-level pressure, then changed for launch. These were parts of a broader response; no single modification by itself accounts for the accident or guarantees the safety of later flights.
Apollo 7: the first crewed Apollo flight, in Earth orbit
Apollo 7 launched on October 11, 1968, with Schirra, Eisele, and Cunningham aboard a Saturn IB. It was the first crewed Apollo mission actually to fly and the first crewed flight of the Apollo Command and Service Modules. The crew spent about 11 days in Earth orbit. NASA’s mission history describes the flight as an engineering test of spacecraft systems and mission support, with rendezvous simulations and live television broadcasts from an American spacecraft.
Earth orbit was a deliberate scope for the mission, not a failed attempt to reach the Moon. Apollo 7’s central task was to put the crewed spacecraft through its paces in flight, where its systems could be operated and checked by astronauts. Its rendezvous simulations also let the crew and ground teams work through procedures relevant to later mission operations without making Apollo 7 itself a lunar mission.

The Service Propulsion System was a key test
One important system exercised on Apollo 7 was the Service Propulsion System (SPS). Later lunar missions would need this system to enter lunar orbit and depart it for the return journey to Earth. NASA’s 2015 Apollo 7 mission overview reports eight SPS firings during the flight. That figure describes the system’s use on Apollo 7; it is not a count of lunar-orbit maneuvers, because Apollo 7 remained in Earth orbit.
What the flight demonstrated
Apollo 7 tested more than the spacecraft hardware in isolation. Its crew and mission support teams worked through spacecraft operations, rendezvous simulations, and communications with the ground. The live television broadcasts also demonstrated that astronauts could send television transmissions from an American spacecraft. These accomplishments made Apollo 7 a crewed systems test and an operational step forward, not a lunar expedition.
The mission splashed down on October 22, 1968, after its roughly 11-day flight. The successful Earth-orbit test provided an important basis for considering what Apollo should attempt next. NASA’s account of Apollo 8 says that Apollo 7’s success and post-flight debriefing helped inform the review of the next mission’s options.

Apollo 8: the first crewed mission to lunar orbit
Apollo 8 launched on December 21, 1968, with Borman, Lovell, and Anders aboard a Saturn V. It became the first crewed spacecraft mission to orbit the Moon. The crew spent about 20 hours in lunar orbit before returning to Earth; the mission splashed down on December 27. Unlike Apollo 7, Apollo 8 was not confined to Earth orbit. Its purpose was to demonstrate that a crewed Apollo spacecraft and its operations could make the journey to lunar orbit and return.
Apollo 8 did not attempt a landing. Reaching lunar orbit was a major milestone in itself: the crew and spacecraft had to operate in the lunar environment, enter orbit around the Moon, and then set out on the return to Earth. The flight therefore answered a different question from Apollo 7. Apollo 7 tested a crewed Command and Service Module in Earth orbit; Apollo 8 demonstrated crewed lunar-orbit flight.
The move to a lunar-orbit mission came amid problems in lunar-module development and concern that the Soviet Union might be preparing a crewed lunar flight. NASA’s account describes those considerations as part of the decision to send Apollo 8 around the Moon. Apollo 7’s result and debriefing were among the inputs to the review, rather than proof that Apollo 8 was simply a repeat of Apollo 7 at a farther destination.

How the missions fit together
Seen chronologically, the missions represent three distinct points in Apollo’s early crewed-flight story. Apollo 1 was the planned first crewed flight, stopped by a fatal ground-test accident. The investigation and spacecraft rework that followed postponed crewed Apollo flights. Apollo 7 then flew the first crewed test of the Command and Service Modules, staying in Earth orbit. Apollo 8 used a Saturn V to extend the crewed mission to lunar orbit and return.
The progression was not simply “Apollo 1 failed, Apollo 7 tried again, Apollo 8 went farther.” Apollo 1 did not fly, so it could not test the spacecraft in orbit. Apollo 7’s job was to demonstrate and test the crewed spacecraft and supporting operations in Earth orbit. Apollo 8’s job was to take that effort into the lunar environment. The missions differed in whether they flew, the destination, the hardware configuration and launch vehicle, and the objectives assigned to their crews.

Keeping Apollo 7 in Earth orbit allowed the first crewed Command and Service Module flight to focus on system testing and mission operations. Its value lay in making that first crewed Apollo flight and performing the planned tests, including the SPS firings and rendezvous simulations. Calling it a “Moon mission” would confuse preparation for lunar flight with actually traveling to the Moon.

Why Apollo 8 was a different kind of milestone
Apollo 8 moved beyond Earth orbit, becoming the first crewed lunar-orbit mission. It demonstrated that the program could carry astronauts around the Moon and bring them home, but not that it had landed astronauts there. The distinction between lunar orbit and lunar landing matters: Apollo 8 accomplished the former, not the latter.
Common points of confusion
- Was Apollo 1 launched? No. Apollo 1 was the designation of a planned crewed mission; the crew died during a preflight ground test, and the spacecraft never launched.
- Did Apollo 7 go to the Moon? No. Apollo 7 stayed in Earth orbit for about 11 days.
- Did Apollo 8 land on the Moon? No. It orbited the Moon for about 20 hours and returned to Earth.
- Was Apollo 1’s planned 14-day duration a flown mission length? No. It was the intended duration of a flight that never took place.
- Did Apollo 7 test the SPS for lunar flight? It fired the system eight times in Earth orbit, providing a test of a system later lunar missions would need for entering and leaving lunar orbit.
Dates and milestones in sequence
- January 27, 1967: The fatal Apollo 1 command-module fire occurred during a preflight test at Cape Kennedy. The planned mission did not launch.
- October 11, 1968: Apollo 7 launched on a Saturn IB, beginning the first crewed Apollo flight.
- October 22, 1968: Apollo 7 splashed down after about 11 days in Earth orbit.
- December 21, 1968: Apollo 8 launched on a Saturn V with a lunar-orbit mission.
- December 27, 1968: Apollo 8 splashed down after its lunar-orbit flight, including about 20 hours around the Moon.
Together, the dates clarify the interval and the order of accomplishments: the Apollo 1 fire occurred in 1967; the first crewed Apollo flight followed in October 1968; and the first crewed lunar-orbit mission followed that December.
