Direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS), biochar, and reforestation can all remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere, but they do so through different processes and store carbon in different places. DACCS captures CO₂ from air and stores it underground; biochar turns biomass into a carbon-rich solid; and reforestation stores carbon as forests grow. Their relative merits depend on storage durability, cost, energy and land needs, ecosystem effects, and the quality of project accounting—not on a single universal ranking.

What makes these three methods different?

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) means taking CO₂ out of the atmosphere and storing it. That is different from avoiding an emission: preventing a tonne of CO₂ from entering the air does not, by itself, remove CO₂ already there. A removal project must therefore be assessed both for how much atmospheric carbon it takes up and for what happens to that carbon afterward.

The three methods compared here use distinct storage reservoirs. DACCS moves captured CO₂ into geological formations. Biochar holds carbon in a relatively stable solid made from biomass, often applied to soil. Reforestation stores carbon in growing trees and soils. The reservoir affects how long carbon may remain out of the atmosphere and what can cause it to return.

There is no single best option in every location or project. A useful comparison considers the whole system: the source of energy or biomass, land and water requirements, transport and storage, potential environmental effects, and whether monitoring can substantiate the net removal.

How each method removes and stores carbon

Direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS)

DACCS uses engineered chemical or physical processes to capture CO₂ directly from ambient air. The captured gas is then transported and injected into suitable geological formations for storage. Unlike tree-based approaches, DACCS does not depend on growing biomass to take up carbon, but it does depend on equipment, energy, and a functioning transport-and-storage system.

Moving air through capture equipment and regenerating the capture materials require energy. The climate benefit therefore depends in part on the carbon intensity of the electricity and heat used. Water use, transport, and storage infrastructure also matter. If those parts of the system are not accounted for, the amount captured at the equipment is not a complete measure of net atmospheric removal.

The IPCC’s 2022 assessment characterized DACCS as a newer method, with demonstration and deployment still limited in scale at the time. Geological storage can potentially retain carbon for very long periods when the site and storage system are properly selected, operated, and monitored. That potential is not a guarantee for every project.

Biochar

Biochar is produced by heating biomass in oxygen-limited conditions, a process called pyrolysis. It creates a carbon-rich material that can be applied to soil or used in other applications. The climate result depends on more than the amount of biochar produced: it also depends on where the biomass came from, what would otherwise have happened to it, the production process, and whether the carbon remains stored.

For example, biomass that would otherwise have decomposed or been burned has a different counterfactual than biomass harvested by clearing land or reducing an existing carbon stock. Harvesting can harm biodiversity and release carbon from ecosystems. Production can also create particulate matter and greenhouse-gas emissions. Energy recovery during production and the emissions associated with transport affect the balance as well.

Biochar may provide soil or agricultural co-benefits, but their scale depends on prior land use and soil management. The IPCC’s 2019 discussion of biochar emphasizes that feedstock sustainability and production conditions matter; the method label alone does not establish a climate benefit.

Reforestation

Reforestation restores forest on land that was recently forested. Afforestation, a related category in the IPCC cost figures, establishes forest on land that has not been forested for a long period. Trees remove CO₂ as they grow, storing carbon in above-ground and below-ground biomass as well as soils.

Forest regrowth is a familiar, widely practiced land-based approach. Where it fits the local ecosystem and community priorities, it can also support biodiversity, watershed functions, and livelihoods. But forest carbon is exposed to disturbances and future land-use changes. A planted area may also compete with food production or natural ecosystems if it is poorly located or designed.

At-a-glance comparison

Comparison point DACCS Biochar Reforestation
Removal process Engineered capture of CO₂ from ambient air Biomass converted into a carbon-rich solid Tree growth fixes atmospheric CO₂
Main storage reservoir Geological formations Carbon-rich solid, often applied to soil Forest vegetation and soils
Broad storage-duration category Potentially millennia or longer with suitable geological storage Commonly grouped in the centuries-to-millennia category; depends on the biochar and setting Typically decades to centuries; exposed to disturbance and land-use reversal
Indicative IPCC cost range USD 100–300 per tonne of CO₂; reported broader range USD 84–386 USD 10–345 per tonne of CO₂ USD 0–240 per tonne of CO₂ for afforestation/reforestation
Main resource considerations Energy, water, transport, and storage infrastructure Sustainable biomass, process energy and emissions, and land and soil context Suitable land, time for growth, ecosystem fit, and long-term forest management
Key risks Energy demand if powered by carbon-intensive supply, water demand, and storage integrity Unsustainable feedstock, production emissions, and biodiversity or carbon-stock losses Fire, drought, pests, land-use reversal, monoculture, and competition with food or ecosystems

The duration categories are broad IPCC classifications, not guaranteed project lifetimes. The cost estimates are from the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report’s Working Group III Technical Summary, published in 2022; they summarize estimates in the literature, not current commercial offers.

How to interpret the cost ranges

The 2022 IPCC assessment lists indicative costs of USD 0–240 per tonne of CO₂ for afforestation/reforestation, USD 10–345 for biochar, and USD 100–300 for DACCS, with a reported DACCS range of USD 84–386. These are assessment-era estimates rather than prices available to a buyer in 2026. The ranges differ substantially because underlying studies use different project designs, cost boundaries, energy assumptions, and carbon-accounting methods.

They should not be read as a like-for-like price list. A low figure in one range does not prove that a particular project will deliver a tonne of net, durable removal at that price. Nor is it sound to average each range into a single number and rank the methods from cheapest to most expensive. A meaningful comparison would need consistent assumptions about what costs are counted, what amount of net CO₂ is removed, and how storage and reversal risks are treated.

When evaluating a project or claim, look for the basis of its reported figure: whether it is an estimate or a project price; which parts of the process are included; how emissions from energy, feedstock, transport, and operation are accounted for; and how stored carbon is monitored. The IPCC figures provide context for the spread in published estimates, not a quote for an individual project.

Durability: where the carbon is stored matters

The IPCC’s CDR taxonomy groups storage potential into broad categories: decades to centuries, centuries to millennia, and ten thousand years or longer. These categories help distinguish storage types, but they do not guarantee the lifetime of carbon at a specific site. The actual outcome depends on project design, conditions, management, and monitoring.

Geological storage in DACCS can fall into the longest-duration category when an appropriate site and storage system are used. The claim still depends on site characterization, operation, and monitoring. Capturing CO₂ is only one stage; the storage system must also be able to account for the injected carbon and its integrity over time.

Biochar is commonly grouped in the centuries-to-millennia category. Its stability depends on the material’s properties and the conditions in which it is used. The fact that a substance is called biochar does not establish how much carbon a particular batch stores or how long it remains stored.

Forest carbon is held in living vegetation and soils, and is generally assessed in the decades-to-centuries category. Fire, drought, pests, and later land-use change can reduce those stocks or release carbon. This reversal risk does not make forest restoration useless; it means that protection, ongoing management, and accounting for losses are part of the removal claim rather than optional details.

Whole-system impacts and local trade-offs

Energy, water, and infrastructure

DACCS requires energy to capture CO₂ from dilute ambient air and regenerate capture materials. Its net climate value depends on the electricity and heat supply, as well as water use and the transport and storage chain. The method’s engineered nature does not make its footprint independent of the infrastructure that powers and supports it.

Biochar’s footprint depends on feedstock and production. Sustainable biomass supply, process emissions, energy recovery, and transport all affect the result. Reforestation requires land and time for trees to grow, and its suitability depends on the local ecosystem and long-term land management. These different needs make comparisons location-specific: an available resource in one place may be constrained or harmful to use in another.

Land, biodiversity, and community rights

Land-based removal can support biodiversity, watershed functions, and livelihoods when projects are designed for their setting. Poor implementation can instead affect biodiversity, food and water security, livelihoods, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Land selection, tenure, species choice, and local governance are therefore central to assessing a project’s quality.

Tree planting is not automatically the right form of restoration. Establishing trees on naturally non-forested land can damage ecosystems, and planting can compete with food production. In some settings, protecting existing forests or supporting natural forest regrowth may be preferable to establishing new tree cover. The relevant question is not simply how many trees are planted, but whether the land use restores an appropriate ecosystem and can be sustained locally.

Biochar has its own land connection through the biomass supply chain. Unsustainable harvesting can damage biodiversity and existing carbon stocks, eroding or reversing the intended climate benefit. A project’s feedstock origin and counterfactual—what would have happened to that material without the project—are essential parts of its climate accounting.

A practical framework for comparing projects

Method names are not enough to establish that a project delivers high-quality removal. Use the following questions to compare proposals without treating the three pathways as interchangeable.

  1. Identify the actual removal and storage pathway. Confirm whether the project captures atmospheric CO₂, converts biomass into biochar, or stores carbon through forest growth. For DACCS, distinguish capture from geological storage; for biochar, identify the material’s use and storage setting; for reforestation, establish the land’s prior condition and intended forest type.
  2. Check the full carbon balance. Ask which emissions are counted across energy, production, transport, and other relevant stages. For biomass-based methods, establish its source and alternative fate. For forests, account for changes in vegetation and soil carbon rather than relying on tree counts alone.
  3. Examine storage duration and reversal treatment. Find out what evidence supports the expected storage period and how monitoring is conducted. For land-based stocks, ask how fire, drought, pests, or land-use changes are handled in the accounting. For geological storage, consider how site selection, operation, and monitoring support the storage claim.
  4. Assess resources and ecological fit. Determine whether the energy, water, biomass, and land demands are compatible with local conditions. Check whether a project could displace food production, harm natural ecosystems, or reduce existing carbon stocks.
  5. Review governance and accounting. For land-based projects, pay attention to tenure, local priorities, species choice, and the rights of affected communities, including Indigenous Peoples. Across all methods, understand what is measured and how the project reports net removal and any reversals.
  6. Interpret cost only after defining what is being compared. Confirm the cost boundary and the quantity of net CO₂ represented. A reported cost without a consistent accounting basis cannot settle which method offers better value.

Why carbon removal does not replace emissions cuts

The IPCC describes CDR as a way to counterbalance residual emissions in addition to deep, rapid, and sustained emissions reductions. That distinction matters: removals address CO₂ that is taken out of the atmosphere, while emissions cuts reduce the amount added in the first place. Treating a future removal as permission to delay avoidable reductions would confuse two different roles.

These three methods can be considered as parts of a broader portfolio, with choices shaped by local resources, storage goals, and environmental and social conditions. A portfolio comparison is more useful than declaring a universal winner because each method has different infrastructure, land, and durability characteristics. The central test remains whether a specific project can show net removal, credible storage, and responsible implementation.
