What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Android does not normally turn a connected gamepad into a system mouse. A controller generally sends button presses and joystick-axis values; a separate controller mode, app, or platform integration must translate those signals into a cursor movement, click, or touchscreen gesture. The exact behavior depends on the device and software doing the translation.
What happens when Android receives gamepad input?
Android identifies gamepad buttons and joystick axes as controller input. The Android API distinguishes SOURCE_GAMEPAD and SOURCE_JOYSTICK from SOURCE_MOUSE (Android InputDevice API).

A joystick axis reports a normalized value from -1.0 to 1.0, with zero at its center. That value describes the stick’s position; it is not a screen coordinate or a mouse movement by itself (Android MotionEvent API). Controller buttons are reported like keyboard button presses, while a game can handle joystick and D-pad events through Android’s controller input APIs (Android Developers: Handle controller actions).
When a cursor or click is involved, something must interpret the controller event and produce a different kind of output. That conversion may happen in controller firmware or a dedicated mode, a remapping app, or a device-specific platform integration. It is not a universal Android behavior.

Why controller compatibility does not mean mouse emulation
Android’s compatibility requirements specify how compatible implementations map certain HID game-controller events to Android input constants. Those requirements establish controller-input compatibility; they do not require Android to interpret every joystick as a mouse (Android 15 Compatibility Definition Document).
For developers, this distinction matters: a game should identify and handle the controller event forms it supports rather than assume a stick will produce pointer movement. D-pad direction, for example, may arrive as hat-axis motion or as key codes, so handling only one form can miss input.

Where the gamepad-to-pointer conversion can happen
| Conversion layer | What it can do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Controller firmware or mode | Translate selected buttons or stick movement into pointer or click behavior. | Whether the exact controller has this mode, how to enter and exit it, and which controls it assigns. |
| App or remapping layer | Interpret gamepad events and map them to pointer actions, touch gestures, or in-app controls. | Whether it works in the intended app, what output it generates, and what permissions or setup it requires. |
| Device-specific platform integration | Provide pointer behavior as part of a particular device or software configuration. | Whether the behavior is supported on the exact device, Android version, and app context. |
These approaches do not necessarily produce the same result. A true mouse pointer event, a touchscreen tap or gesture, and an in-game action are different outputs. A mapping may work only in one app rather than across Android.
A controller manual illustrates why mappings vary
An older Bluetooth VR gamepad manual hosted by Ingram Micro describes one device with a mouse mode: its M control changes joystick function, Select acts as left/confirm, and the manual says the stick must be moved while holding the confirm control. Pressing M again returns the controller to music mode. This is an example of that particular controller’s design, not a standard mapping for Android-compatible gamepads generally. The manual does not establish whether the product is currently available.

Can AccessibilityService turn a gamepad into a mouse?
Android’s AccessibilityService API lets a properly configured accessibility service dispatch gestures to the touchscreen. Those gestures are treated as if performed directly on the screen, and the API notes that system accessibility features can affect gesture dispatch (AccessibilityService API reference).
This gives software a way to generate touchscreen actions; it is not native mouse input and does not create a universal gamepad-to-mouse setting. The service or another layer still has to interpret controller input and decide which gestures to send.

Android’s separate autoclick feature applies to an attached mouse: after the cursor stops moving for a chosen dwell delay, it can take an action. Autoclick does not make a gamepad move the cursor (Google Accessibility Help: Autoclick (dwell timing)).

What Android controller settings can—and cannot—change
Google’s Android Help explains how to connect a controller using a compatible wired cable or Bluetooth and describes settings that can swap button assignments or the left and right joystick functions. Menu paths vary depending on whether the controller is wired or wireless (Set up your game controller settings on Android).
Those settings address connection and controller layout. The help page does not say they enable cursor control or mouse mode, so changing a button or stick assignment should not be assumed to create a pointer.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot an expected cursor
- Identify the controller and Android device. Note the controller model, the device, Android version, and the app where you expect the cursor to work. Behavior in one app or mode does not establish system-wide support.
- Check the controller’s documentation for a dedicated mouse or pointer mode. Look for the mode-switch control, the stick used for movement, the click control, and the procedure for exiting the mode. Do not assume another controller uses the same mapping.
- Separate connection from conversion. If the controller connects and works in a game, Android is receiving controller input; that alone does not mean it is sending mouse events.
- Check the intended software layer. If pointer behavior depends on a particular app, remapping feature, accessibility service, or device integration, confirm that it supports the specific app and output you need.
- Test the actual output. Determine whether the result is a visible system cursor, a touchscreen action, or an in-app control. These are not interchangeable, and support for one does not prove support for the others.
How to judge a proposed gamepad mouse setup
- Conversion point: Is the mapping performed by controller firmware, an app, or a device integration?
- Output: Does it generate mouse pointer events, touchscreen gestures, or game controls?
- Scope: Does it work throughout the system or only in a particular app?
- Controls: Which stick moves the pointer, which button clicks, and how do you enter or leave the mode? Can sensitivity or dead zones be adjusted?
- Compatibility evidence: Is the behavior documented for the exact controller model, Android device and version, and app you plan to use?
