Android security updates do not reach every phone on the day Google publishes a bulletin. Google documents vulnerabilities and fixes; device makers then determine which fixes apply to each model, integrate them into firmware, test the build and distribute it—sometimes with a carrier involved. A fix for an app or service distributed through Google Play may arrive separately, without a full firmware update.
How a security fix gets from a bulletin to a phone
- Google publishes the Android Security Bulletin. It describes security issues and patch-level information. The fixes can come from Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the upstream Linux kernel or system-on-chip (SoC) manufacturers. Google notifies Android partners about AOSP security issues and provides patches. Android Security Bulletins explains the bulletin process and patch levels.
- Device makers adapt applicable fixes. A patch must be integrated into the software for a particular product. AOSP fixes are made available in source after quarterly bulletins; Google says platform security fixes are generally merged into AOSP within 24–48 hours of quarterly bulletin publication. That is source-code availability for manufacturers, not a promise that a phone will install an update within that time.
- The build is tested and distributed. Google says Android system updates are generally delivered through over-the-air (OTA) update packages. The device maker—or, for some delivery paths, a carrier—controls the update for the applicable product. Google Pixel updates also go through carrier technical acceptance testing.
- The phone installs the update. The OTA becomes available to a device as its rollout reaches that model and variant. Google publishes Pixel factory images as an advanced sideloading alternative, but that is different from waiting for the normal OTA.
Google’s security updates and resources describe these delivery routes. The key distinction is between publication of a fix and its eventual availability as a tested update for a specific phone.

Which fixes require firmware, and which can arrive through Google Play?
Many fixes to Android framework or kernel components require an OEM firmware update. These changes are part of the device’s system software, so an app update through Google Play is not a substitute for the relevant firmware patch.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Some issues in apps or libraries distributed through Google Play can instead be fixed by updating that app or service. Google’s examples include Gmail, Google Play Services and WebView. That route can deliver a fix independently of a full device OTA, but it does not mean every Android security vulnerability can be fixed through Play.

Keep the Android security patch level and the Google Play system update date separate when checking a phone. They refer to different update mechanisms, even when dates happen to match.
Why one Android phone gets an update before another
Different components have different patch sources
Android platform, Linux kernel and SoC vulnerabilities do not all originate in the same place. A device maker must determine which fixes apply to its hardware and software, then integrate them into the appropriate product build. The bulletin’s publication is therefore not a single OTA dispatch for every Android device.

Models, variants, makers and carriers differ
Update availability can vary by manufacturer, exact model, regional or carrier variant, and the maker’s support and distribution arrangements. A phone with a similar name—or one sold in another market—may not share the same build or rollout schedule. Android’s general guidance does not set one arrival date for all manufacturers and devices.
Testing and staged distribution add time
Updates may need technical acceptance testing and are often rolled out over time rather than made available to every eligible phone at once. Google’s Pixel documentation says an OTA generally takes about one and a half calendar weeks to reach every Google device. That is an approximate Pixel-specific rollout duration, not a timetable or service guarantee for Android phones generally. The official Pixel Update Bulletins provide Pixel-specific information.

A bulletin may define more than one patch level
A patch-level date is not simply a global arrival date: it indicates which sets of bulletin fixes are covered. For example, the June 2026 Android Security Bulletin describes 2026-06-01 and 2026-06-05 levels. The earlier level covers a subset of issues; the later level includes the later set and issues from previous bulletins. The bulletin says partners may address a similar subset more quickly and encourages bundling fixes. So a phone showing the earlier level is not necessarily missing every fix associated with the later level; check the bulletin’s coverage rather than judging by date alone.

How to check what your phone has—and what to do next
- Open the Android version and security update screen in Settings. Use Google’s Check and update your Android version guidance to find the relevant screen for your device. Note the Android version, Android security patch level and Google Play system update date separately.
- Identify the exact phone variant. Check the full model and whether it is a regional or carrier version; a product family name alone may not identify its update track.
- Consult the manufacturer’s or carrier’s official update information. Look for availability for that exact model and market, and whether the update is in a staged rollout. The Android bulletin explains fixes, but it does not establish the release date for every device.
- Compare dates with the right reference. Check what a bulletin’s patch level covers, and distinguish a Play system update from a firmware patch. Repeatedly checking Settings or changing a setting does not speed up a server-side rollout.
