Android can request language detection and switching, but that does not guarantee a phone will recognize Hindi and English mixed within the same sentence. Support depends on the speech-recognition service, its available models and the feature being used. Google’s current guidance lists Hindi as a beta locale for ML Kit speech recognition, but does not promise reliable Hinglish transcription; Hindi is not among the languages listed for automatic switching in Pixel’s advanced Gboard voice typing.
What “Hindi-English code-switching” means
Code-switching means using two languages within a sentence or discourse. In speech recognition, that is different from choosing Hindi for one utterance and English for the next. A feature that detects or switches languages does not, by itself, establish that it can transcribe Hindi and English interleaved within a single utterance.

The Hindi-English Code-Switching Speech Corpus paper treats mixed-language speech as a distinct ASR research problem and presents a corpus designed for work on it. A product’s general multilingual support or Hindi locale listing is not equivalent to a demonstrated result on that task.

How Android’s language-switching API works
Android’s RecognizerIntent is an interface through which an app can request speech recognition. It is not itself a recognizer, and the selected recognition service determines whether optional requests take effect. Android explicitly cautions that language detection and switching behavior can vary by implementation.

An app can set a language tag using EXTRA_LANGUAGE. On API level 34, it can also request language detection or switching and restrict automatic switching to allowed language tags with EXTRA_LANGUAGE_SWITCH_ALLOWED_LANGUAGES. The relevant language models need to be downloaded; otherwise, a switch failure can produce an error.

These settings describe the requested switching behavior. They are not accuracy guarantees for Hindi-English speech, and a recognition service may not implement the optional controls.

Does Gboard automatically support Hindi-English voice typing?
Google’s advanced voice typing instructions describe automatic detection for supported languages on Pixel 6 and later. The listed languages are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish; Hindi is not on that list. The instructions therefore do not establish automatic Hindi-English switching for this Gboard feature.

What ML Kit says about Hindi speech recognition
Google’s ML Kit GenAI Speech Recognition documentation lists Hindi (hi-IN) as beta in both Basic and Advanced modes. Basic mode is described as similar to the platform’s traditional on-device SpeechRecognizer; Advanced mode uses a GenAI model and is described as having broader language coverage. The documentation warns that beta languages may have a slightly higher word error rate and recommends evaluating a locale for the intended use case.
That locale listing is not a published promise about Hindi-English code-switching accuracy. The current documentation lists Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 for Advanced mode. It also labels the API alpha and states that it has no SLA or deprecation policy, so availability and terms may change. Consult the ML Kit GenAI Speech Recognition documentation for current details.

Why language identification is not mixed-language speech recognition
ML Kit Language Identification analyzes text that already exists; it does not recognize speech. It can identify romanized Hindi and return likely language codes with confidence values, but it identifies the language of a whole string and does not identify multiple languages within one string. It should not be treated as a solution for labeling Hindi and English word by word in an utterance.

How to check what your Android setup can do
- Identify the feature. Determine whether you are using Gboard voice typing, an app built on Android’s
SpeechRecognizer, or a third-party recognition service. Their capabilities are not interchangeable. - Check the published language support. For Pixel advanced Gboard voice typing, compare your expectation with Google’s listed languages. For an app or service, check its own supported locales and whether it explicitly evaluates Hindi-English mixing within one utterance.
- Check language selection and models. Confirm the keyboard language or recognizer language setting, and whether required recognition models are available. Android’s switching API requires relevant models to be downloaded.
- Test the exact speech you need recognized. Try natural Hindi-English phrases, including your usual accent, switching pattern and script or transliteration expectations. A result on separate Hindi-only and English-only phrases does not establish performance on mixed speech.
- For app developers, verify the implementation. Treat language detection and switching extras as optional requests, not guaranteed behavior. Test on the recognition services and devices your users actually use, and handle unsupported requests or switch errors.
Is there a published Android Hinglish accuracy score?
The official Android and Google sources cited here do not publish a directly comparable accuracy figure for Hindi-English code-switching on Android or Gboard. ML Kit’s beta label is not an accuracy percentage, and broad multilingual coverage is not a substitute for a benchmark matching the device, recognition service, speech style, language mix and evaluation set.
A useful evaluation would document those conditions, including accent, noise, switching pattern and whether Hindi is spoken or romanized in the expected output. The corpus paper provides research context, but its accessible abstract does not supply an Android-specific benchmark.
