You can connect by USB or, if both your phone and car support it, wirelessly. The exact setup depends on your vehicle, phone, and the app you want to use.
How music playback works in Android Auto
Your phone provides the music or podcast; Android Auto provides a car-friendly way to use compatible apps on the vehicle’s display. The sound plays through the car speakers. Sign in to the media app on your phone before starting Android Auto. Some services or features may require a subscription or premium account. Google’s Android Auto help page lists examples including Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, YouTube Music, and podcasts.

Start playback by voice or from the display
Use the car’s microphone button or say “Hey Google,” then make a request. Google gives examples such as “Play my playlist on Spotify,” “Play [song name] on Amazon Music,” “Play house music on Pandora,” and “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.” You can also open the app launcher on the car display and select a media app. The recent-apps area can provide a shortcut to the last media app you used.

What you need to connect Android Auto
Your car or aftermarket stereo must support Android Auto; a USB port alone does not establish compatibility. Check the exact vehicle or receiver model with its manufacturer. Android Auto is integrated into the phone for the car-display experience, so you do not need to install a separate Android Auto app from the Play Store for this purpose. Google’s requirements page also notes that Android Auto is unavailable on Android (Go edition) devices and that availability and features vary by country.
| Connection | Phone and service requirements | Vehicle and setup requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher and an active data plan, according to Google. | A compatible car or stereo and a high-quality USB cable. Connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port and follow the display prompts. |
| Wireless | A compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google lists Android 11.0 phones as compatible with wireless projection. | A car or stereo that specifically supports wireless Android Auto. Pair the phone and car over Bluetooth during the first setup; leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on. |
These are Google’s published requirements, but compatibility also depends on the exact phone and vehicle. The requirements page notes an additional EU regulatory condition for in-car 5 GHz Wi-Fi and says Pixel 3 and newer comply. If you are unsure about a phone or car, verify its support with the manufacturer. See Google’s requirements and country information.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Connect by USB
- Check compatibility: Confirm that your specific vehicle or receiver supports Android Auto and that the feature is enabled in its infotainment settings.
- Use a suitable cable: Match the cable connector to the phone and car port, and use a high-quality cable.
- Connect while parked: Plug the phone into the vehicle’s USB port, then follow the prompts on the car display and phone. Google’s setup instructions recommend completing setup while parked.
Connect wirelessly
- Confirm both ends support wireless Android Auto: The phone must meet Google’s wireless requirements, and the exact car or stereo must support wireless projection.
- Enable the required connections: Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone.
- Pair the phone and car: Start the vehicle’s Bluetooth pairing process and follow the prompts. Once paired, Android Auto should start within a few seconds; if it does not, select Android Auto on the car display. Follow Google’s wireless setup guidance.
Choose the connection and music app that fit
Before deciding how to connect, check support for your exact vehicle and phone rather than assuming that a USB socket or Bluetooth pairing means Android Auto will work. A wired connection requires a cable; wireless use avoids plugging in but requires compatible wireless projection on both phone and car. For music, check that the app is compatible, that your account can play the content you want, and that voice controls work in your language and region. Google’s help pages do not rank music services.

- Confirm Android Auto is supported by the vehicle and enabled in the infotainment system.
- Try a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet). Google advises against using a USB hub or extension.
- Try the cable supplied with the phone or a USB-IF-certified cable, as Google recommends.
- If a previously working connection has stopped, try replacing the cable. For an aftermarket receiver, check its maker’s site for firmware updates.
A cable can help establish or stabilize a wired connection, but it cannot add Android Auto support to an incompatible car. Google’s troubleshooting advice covers connection problems and cable recommendations.
