They do not give an agent unrestricted access to an app, and they are not available to every AI app by default. Android describes AppFunctions as experimental; as of May 2026, its end-to-end Gemini integration was in private preview with trusted testers.
What Android AppFunctions do
AppFunctions provide a structured way for an Android app to make specific operations available to an agent. The app developer decides which functions to expose and defines their inputs and outputs. An agent can then use those functions to carry out a user request, potentially coordinating work across apps. This differs from giving an agent general control of an app’s interface or unrestricted access to its data.

Android characterizes AppFunctions as Android-specific capabilities that execute locally. By contrast, a conventional remote MCP tool is platform-agnostic and typically runs through a service, requiring a network round trip. The approaches serve different integration needs rather than representing interchangeable APIs. Android’s AppFunctions overview explains the distinction.

- The app declares its functions. Developers select operations and describe their parameters and results.
- Tooling prepares the function metadata. With the Jetpack approach, annotations and tooling generate schema metadata that Android can index.
- An authorized agent discovers available functions. It retrieves metadata and, when needed, checks runtime state and observes changes.
- The agent chooses a function and supplies parameters. It maps the user’s request to a suitable function and its typed inputs.
- The platform invokes the function. The app performs the exposed operation locally and returns a result.
The platform API reference describes the discovery, metadata, runtime-state, observation, and execution APIs. Callers should check that AppFunctions are supported and that the requested function is enabled before attempting execution.

Who can invoke AppFunctions—and what is available to users?
Discovery and execution require android.permission.EXECUTE_APP_FUNCTIONS. The API is designed for trusted, system-privileged applications, so registering a function does not make it callable by any AI app installed on the device.
Availability is also limited by the status of the agent integration. Android’s overview labels AppFunctions experimental and reported in May 2026 that Gemini integration was in private preview with trusted testers. That is not general Gemini availability, and joining Android’s Early Access Program does not itself guarantee access. Check the current Android overview for changes before planning around a particular agent.

How to implement AppFunctions in an Android app
Android recommends that most developers use the AppFunctions Jetpack SDK for a more convenient, type-safe implementation. At a high level, the work is to define the app’s supported operations, add the function metadata, and ensure the app handles invocation and results appropriately. For current APIs and implementation details, follow the official overview and API reference.
An Android Developers article published July 21, 2026 demonstrates Jetpack dependency version androidx.appfunctions:appfunctions:1.0.0-alpha10 and ADB testing on Android 17 or newer. Those are snapshots from that article, not timeless version requirements; check the current guide and release artifacts before copying them into a project. The article’s framing is captured by Android Developer Relations engineer Ben Weiss: “Android AppFunctions is the API that brings this concept to life.” Read the implementation article.

How to test AppFunctions
Android’s overview describes devices running Android 16 or higher. The official sample setup specifies Android SDK 36 or later and supports either a device or emulator running Android 16 or higher, so a physical test phone is optional. Follow the sample repository’s setup instructions for the current configuration and examples; it includes a ChatApp example and an AppFunctions Testing Agent. Android AppFunctions samples.
The right test environment depends on what you need to validate. An emulator is suitable for exercising the sample setup without dedicated hardware; a physical device can help validate behavior on actual hardware. Neither choice changes the platform baseline in the sample instructions.

AppFunctions and remote tools: which approach fits?
| Consideration | Android AppFunctions | Conventional remote MCP tools |
|---|---|---|
| Platform reach | Android-specific OS integration | Platform-agnostic |
| Where work runs | Locally on the device | Typically through a remote service |
| Network dependency | Local invocation does not inherently require a service round trip | Typically requires network communication with the service |
| Access model | Discovery and execution require the system-privileged permission android.permission.EXECUTE_APP_FUNCTIONS |
Varies by service and integration; the Android permission does not apply |
| Testing setup | Android 16-or-higher device or emulator in the official sample setup | Depends on the remote server and client setup |
These distinctions follow Android’s overview and sample setup. AppFunctions are a fit when an Android app should expose selected, local operations through Android’s agent integration. A remote tool may suit a capability that must be shared across platforms or provided by a service.
