First, distinguish device protection from Google Account enrollment
Google uses “Advanced Protection” for two related but separate protections. The device setting applies security controls on an Android device. Google Account Advanced Protection is an account-enrollment program with separate rules for installing apps. Their descriptions differ because they apply to different protection modes and app situations—not because they describe one identical installation rule.

What happens to app installs and updates?
Unknown-source apps under the device setting
With device Advanced Protection on, Android blocks installing apps from unknown sources and blocks updates for apps that were originally installed from unknown sources. Google’s rationale is that these apps may not be vetted and can carry greater risk. Google Play Protect also cannot be turned off while the device setting is active. Google Android Help

Account enrollment describes a different boundary: new apps from most sources outside Play Store are restricted, with Google Play, Android Debug Bridge (ADB), and preinstalled Android app stores listed as allowed sources. Existing non-Play apps are not removed and continue to receive updates. These account rules should not be read as an exception to the device setting’s separate restriction on apps originally installed from unknown sources.

If an app in Play Store has not been approved for Google Account Advanced Protection, the documented flow is to select “See details” and then “Continue to install.” Google advises doing this only if the app is essential or you trust its developer. Google Account Help
Turning off account enrollment
After removing the enrolled account or unenrolling, it can take up to 24 hours for the automatic protections to stop. Google Account Help

Does it change app permissions?
The documented permission-adjacent change for device Advanced Protection concerns accessibility services: Android restricts them to verified accessibility tools to reduce the risk posed by malicious apps. Google Android Help

What changes in Chrome browsing?
When device Advanced Protection is active, Chrome on Android applies several settings intended to reduce exposure to unsafe connections, sites, and browser features:
- Secure connections: “Always use secure connections” is turned on, with “Warns you for insecure public & private sites” selected. Chrome uses HTTPS when possible. Google Chrome Help
- Safe Browsing: Android Safe Browsing Live Threat Protection is turned on to block phishing attacks from newly emerging malicious websites. Google Chrome Help
- JavaScript optimizations: These are turned off. Google says disabling the optimizer reduces potential security exposure. Google Chrome Help Google Android Help
- WebGPU: Chrome WebGPU is turned off. Android Help describes WebGPU as an advanced graphics technology and says disabling it helps protect against certain security threats and risk. Google Android Help
How to turn on device Advanced Protection
- Set a screen lock if you do not already have one; Google requires it before device protection can be enabled.
- Open Settings > Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection. Google also lists a route through Google settings: All services > Personal and device safety. Labels and placement can vary by device and Android version. Google Android Help
- Follow the on-screen instructions. A reboot may be required before protection is fully active.
Google does not publish a complete manufacturer-by-manufacturer availability matrix in the cited documentation. The “Apps that checked for Device protection” list is available only on Android 16 devices. Google Android Help
