For garden and container gerbera daisies, choose a complete fertilizer whose label includes iron and manganese; there is no established single best NPK ratio for home use. Clemson Extension and UF/IFAS describe either a few applications of controlled-release fertilizer during the growing season or more frequent liquid feeding. Match the schedule to the product label, and check pH, moisture, and drainage before treating yellow leaves as a fertilizer problem.
What fertilizer should you choose?
Start with a complete fertilizer labeled for flowering plants, and check its nutrient list for iron and manganese. Clemson Extension and the University of Florida IFAS both identify these micronutrients as relevant to gerberas. The label matters more than a particular NPK number: the available home-gardening guidance does not establish an ideal NPK ratio for garden beds or household containers.

Greenhouse production formulas are not a substitute for home-use directions. A Wisconsin Master Gardener page reproduces production-oriented formulas, but those rates are not translated into garden or container dosing. Use a fertilizer specifically suited to your growing context and follow its label.

Controlled-release or liquid fertilizer?
Choose based on how often you want to apply fertilizer. Extension schedules differ, so treat them as source-specific examples rather than a universal prescription.
#1 Best Overall
- 🍀Complete Nutrition: Gerbera Full Diet organic fertilizer provides all essential nutrients and active microorganisms needed for full growth of Gerbera plants.
- 🍀Boost Flower Growth: The active ingredients help increase flower production and support healthy blooming of Gerbera plants.
- 🍀Balance Soil Conditions: It works to balance nitrogen levels in the soil, improve aeration, and regulate pH - creating optimal conditions for strong root development.
- 🍀Enhance Microbe Population: Double filtering enriches the soil with beneficial microbes that break down nutrients into a bioavailable form easily absorbed by plant roots.
- 🍀Prevent Nutritional Deficiencies: Using this all-in-one fertilizer eliminates issues from under or over-fertilizing and ensures Gerbera plants get precisely what they need to thrive.
| Fertilizer form | Published schedule | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Controlled-release | Clemson Extension and UF/IFAS describe applying it two or three times during the growing season. | A fit if you prefer fewer applications. Follow the product label for amount and timing. |
| Liquid | Clemson Extension describes feeding every two weeks. UF/IFAS also lists a complete fertilizer monthly. | A fit if you are comfortable with more frequent applications. Use the interval and dilution on the product label. |
For either form, look for a complete formula that includes iron and manganese. Clemson Extension also mentions foliar sprays for micronutrients; apply any spray only as its label directs. See Clemson Extension’s gerbera care guidance and the UF/IFAS gerbera guide for their recommendations.
Why does pH matter for gerbera fertilizer?
Fertilizer nutrients must be available in the root zone for plants to take them up. UMass Extension gives a substrate pH range of 5.8–6.2 for greenhouse gerbera production. In that greenhouse context, pH above 6.2 can reduce iron availability; below 5.8, excessive iron and manganese uptake can be associated with purplish lower leaves and black spots. These thresholds describe greenhouse growing media, not universal targets for every garden soil or potting mix.

- For all blooming plants
- Instantly feeds for beautiful results
- Feed every 2 weeks
- Prevents overfeeding and burning when used as directed
If you suspect a nutrient problem, use a pH test appropriate to the growing medium and seek region-specific growing advice before trying to adjust pH. UMass’s March 31, 2025 greenhouse update and April 17, 2026 greenhouse update provide the production-context pH guidance.
What should you check if gerbera leaves turn yellow?
Yellowing between the veins of upper leaves can be consistent with iron deficiency, but it does not prove that the plant needs more fertilizer. High pH can limit iron availability, and wet, poorly drained conditions can damage roots and complicate nutrient uptake.
Rank #3
- FEEDS ALL PLANTS: Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food is a plant fertilizer that feeds all outdoor, in-ground and indoor plants, including roses, flowers, houseplants, vegetables, and trees
- PROMOTES GROWTH: Use this all-purpose plant food outdoors and indoors to grow bigger, more beautiful plants (vs unfed plants); starts working instantly to promote quick, beautiful results
- NPK: 24-8-16 outdoor and indoor plant food contains Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) which are key nutrients plants need to thrive
- APPLICATION: To use as plant food indoors, mix 1/2 tsp per gallon of water in a watering can; to feed outdoor plants, mix 1-1/2 tbsp per 1-1/2 gallon of water in any watering can or use with the Miracle-Gro Garden Feeder
- COVERAGE: One 1.5 lb. container of Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food can be used as an outdoor and indoor plant food for houseplants, vegetables, flowers, trees, roses and more; feeds approximately 600 sq. ft. of garden area
- Check whether the yellowing is between the veins, especially on newer, upper leaves.
- Assess the growing medium’s pH before adding iron or changing fertilizer.
- Check moisture and drainage. Gerbera crowns and roots need well-drained conditions; soggy soil can contribute to root rot.
- If the cause remains unclear, consult local extension guidance rather than adding nutrients blindly.
UMass Extension recommends monitoring pH when investigating suspected iron-uptake problems. For drainage and root-health context, see NC State Extension’s Gerbera jamesonii profile.
