A small base trigger can start a self-amplifying breakdown in a specially designed polyurethane: as the polymer degrades, it releases amines that promote further degradation. In a visual demonstration, a localized hexylamine trigger started a color change in a cross-linked gel analogue. This is a laboratory materials-chemistry result, not evidence that ordinary polyurethane behaves the same way.
Why the breakdown can spread
The reported polyurethane was designed with a base-sensitive Fmoc-derived carbamate in every repeating unit. A base such as hexylamine initiates the reaction by removing a proton. The polymer then undergoes E1cB elimination and decarboxylation, producing amines.

Those amines catalyse further degradation, which releases still more amines. The result is autocatalysis: the reaction products help drive additional breakdown. The initial trigger starts the process; the material’s own degradation products help propagate it.

To make the process visible, the researchers used a cross-linked polyurethane gel analogue containing bromothymol blue, a pH-sensitive indicator. They applied a localized hexylamine solution trigger. As degradation proceeded and amino groups formed, the report describes the gel changing from a yellow solid to a blue solution.

This demonstration used a gel analogue. It illustrates how a localized trigger can initiate visible change in that material; it does not establish how arbitrary commercial polyurethane products would perform.
What the result could—and could not—mean
The report identifies improved disposability of industrial polyurethanes and rapid production of an amine base as possible applications. These are proposed directions, not demonstrated commercial outcomes. The report does not establish an industrial process, a lifecycle or environmental benefit, or degradation under ordinary environmental conditions.

The central idea is controlled, chemically initiated propagation in a purpose-designed material. Practical use would depend on factors such as the material’s form, how and where a trigger could be applied, and whether the desired outcome is bulk breakdown or use of the resulting products. The report supplies no quantitative comparisons on those points.
