Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An AI terminal is a terminal-centered way to work with an AI agent: you give it a task, it uses a model to choose an action, carries that action out through tools such as shell commands, then reads the result and either tries again or responds. The useful shared pattern is task and context → model decision → tool action → feedback. That is a conceptual loop, not a guarantee that every product has the same internals or capabilities.
What “AI terminal” means—and what it doesn’t
“AI terminal” is a loose label for an interaction pattern, not a standardized product category. The terminal is the surface where a person gives instructions and where an agent can use commands or other tools. The agent coordinates the model and those tools; the model by itself is not the complete product. A 2026 survey describes terminal agents in terms of command execution, textual feedback, and interaction with a stateful environment, and emphasizes that outcomes depend on the model, interface, harness, runtime, and environment together (survey).

In a coding workflow, that environment may include a repository, project instructions, prior conversation, installed development tools, and permission settings. The agent may inspect or edit files and run commands, so its work can change the environment—not merely produce chat text. “Terminal” therefore does not, on its own, tell you which model is used, how much autonomy the agent has, whether execution is local, or what safeguards are available.

The clearest way to understand the pattern is as four linked stages. The details vary between products; these steps describe the common workflow, not a claim that every implementation is identical. OpenAI’s explanation of the Codex agent loop lays out this pattern (OpenAI’s agent-loop explanation).

1. Give the agent a task and context
You state the outcome you want, such as fixing a bug or explaining a test failure. The agent may also use project files, local instructions, conversation history, and configured permissions as context. For Codex CLI, OpenAI’s guide recommends starting from the project directory and describing the task (Codex CLI guide).
2. The model decides what to do next
The agent’s harness assembles relevant instructions and context for the model. The model can answer directly or request a tool action—for example, inspecting a file before proposing a change. The model’s decision is only one part of the process: the surrounding harness and runtime determine how requests are handled.

3. The agent acts through a tool
If a tool action is appropriate, the agent may run a shell command, inspect files, edit code, or use another configured tool. Codex CLI documentation describes working with repository files and local development tools; Anthropic describes Claude Code as usable from a terminal or supported IDE for delegated coding work (Codex CLI guide; Claude Code team and enterprise guide).
4. The agent reads the result, then loops or finishes
Tool output becomes new context. The model can request another action, adjust its approach after an error, or return a response to you. In a coding task, the changed files may be the main result; the final explanation is not necessarily the only output. OpenAI’s loop explanation describes this feedback-and-repeat structure (OpenAI’s agent-loop explanation).

How the pattern appears in real tools
Codex CLI and Claude Code illustrate the terminal-centered workflow, but neither example makes “AI terminal” a single fixed design.
- Codex CLI: OpenAI documents work against a local repository, including inspecting and editing files and running tools installed on the machine. Its guide also describes choices involving the model, reasoning effort, permissions, and commands, with ways to steer a turn and inspect commands and diffs (Codex CLI guide).
- Claude Code: Anthropic describes access to Claude models through a terminal or supported IDE for delegated coding tasks, with transparency and user control. Its support collection summarizes uses such as writing, reviewing, and shipping code (Claude Code team and enterprise guide; Claude Code support collection).
