Amazon recommendations can reflect your recent shopping activity, what you are searching for, and details about products. Prices can change for different reasons: a Marketplace seller may change its offer, Amazon may adjust its own retail price, a promotion may start or end, or a different seller’s offer may become featured. Amazon’s public explanations do not reveal a single formula for every recommendation or establish why a particular item’s price changed.
How does Amazon choose what to recommend?
Amazon describes recommendations as personalized: they can take account of a shopper’s preferences and activity, including products viewed, added to a cart, or purchased. The current query and product attributes can also matter. That does not mean every recommendation placement uses every signal, or that Amazon publishes one formula for all of them.

Amazon’s 2023 EU Store risk assessment says discovery can use real-time customer information, past engagement such as clicks, cart additions, and purchases, the specific search query, and product details such as availability and handling time. It also says featured search results can reflect aggregate customer actions, how well product information matches the query, availability, and shipping costs. Personalized recommendations differ from general popularity lists: an item may be suggested because it fits an individual shopper’s apparent interests, not simply because it is widely purchased. Amazon also describes using customer preferences and shopping activity to personalize deals. In a generative-AI example, Amazon says a language model may reorder a product title to emphasize a feature relevant to a shopper, such as “gluten-free” when searches suggest that attribute matters; a separate evaluator model checks the result. Amazon’s personalization director Mihir Bhanot described the evaluator’s role: “If the primary LLM generates a product description that is too generic or fails to highlight key features unique to a specific customer, the evaluator LLM will flag the issue.” Amazon’s explanation of personalized shopping.

How Amazon search matches and ranks products
Search involves at least two distinct stages in Amazon’s 2025 EU compliance report:
Rank #2
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.

- Matching: Amazon identifies products that fit the shopper’s intent.
- Ranking: It scores and orders those matching products. Amazon says it uses different models, for example by product category, and cites past customer actions and product information such as titles, prices, and descriptions as ranking inputs.
Amazon says these ranking models do not distinguish whether a product is sold by Amazon Retail or a Marketplace seller, whether it is an Amazon brand, or whether the seller uses Fulfillment by Amazon. It also notes that a temporary adjustment can surface some new products before they have accumulated shopping-behavior data. The report describes the EU Store; it does not disclose model weights or provide enough detail to reproduce the ranking. Amazon’s 2025 EU compliance report.
Why can the price of an Amazon product change?
A product page can show several sellers’ offers for the same product, and their prices, shipping costs, delivery promises, and return terms may differ. Amazon chooses a featured offer, while other offers can remain available on the page. Amazon says offers compete on factors including total price with delivery, delivery speed, customer-service history, and reliability in meeting delivery promises. A change in the featured offer can therefore change the price most prominently displayed without any change to the product itself. Amazon’s featured-offer explanation.

A Marketplace seller changed its offer
Third-party sellers set their own prices. Some use Amazon’s optional automated pricing tools, which can apply rules tied to demand or competing prices. In that case, the seller’s offer may move as market conditions or its pricing rule changes; Amazon’s tools are optional, not proof that Amazon set every seller’s price. Amazon seller pricing guidance and Amazon’s automated pricing guidance.
Amazon Retail changed its price
Amazon says it compares prices in its own retail business with prices at competing physical and online stores as part of its low-price approach. That is Amazon’s account of its policy; it does not establish that a competitor caused any particular Amazon price change. Amazon’s explanation of its retail pricing approach.

A promotion or reference price changed
A promotion can temporarily alter the amount a buyer pays. A crossed-out price or a “Was” label is a reference, not proof that shoppers recently paid that amount. Amazon describes List Price as a validated manufacturer-recommended price and Typical/Was Price as a reference derived from recent Amazon sales. Its methodology can change, so these labels should be read as context rather than as a substitute for a dated price history. Amazon’s reference-price guidance.

Are Amazon prices personalized to each shopper?
The public explanations cited here support personalized product recommendations and presentation, but they do not establish that Amazon changes an individual product’s price for a shopper based on that shopper’s browsing or purchase history. Do not infer individualized pricing merely because the products recommended to two shoppers differ. A specific price change could have another cause, such as a seller’s new offer, Amazon Retail’s pricing, a promotion, or a different featured offer.

- KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
How can you check whether a price is a good deal?
- Open the product page and look for the price-history link near the price. Amazon also says you can ask Alexa for Shopping a direct question such as, “What’s the price history?”
- Review the dated price history against the current price. Amazon’s feature page describes 30-, 90-, and 365-day views, but availability varies by marketplace and the 365-day view has been rolling out in stages. Check what your local Amazon store currently offers. Amazon’s price-history feature page.
- Open the other buying options and compare the total delivered price, delivery speed, seller record, and return terms—not just the headline price.
- Treat List Price and Typical/Was Price as reference points, not evidence of the amount paid in recent transactions; use the dated history to assess past prices.
Amazon reported in 2026 that more than 50 million customers had used its price-history feature since its 2024 launch. That is a company-reported usage figure, not an independent measurement.
Can you know exactly why a particular price changed?
Not from a general explanation of Amazon’s systems alone. A dated price history can show when the displayed price moved, and the offer list can show which sellers and terms are available now. Those checks may narrow the possibilities, but Amazon’s public materials do not provide a causal explanation for every item’s price change. A definitive answer may require information from Amazon or the seller that is not public.
