Active Noise Cancellation reduces the outside sounds you hear; Transparency mode lets those sounds in; Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts the balance between the two as your surroundings change. Choose ANC for quieter listening, Transparency when you want to hear around you, or Adaptive Audio when you would rather not switch modes yourself.
How are AirPods noise cancellation, Transparency mode, and Adaptive Audio different?
The main difference is how much outside sound reaches you and who controls the change. With ANC or Transparency, you select a listening mode. Adaptive Audio adjusts the balance automatically.

What does Active Noise Cancellation do?
AirPods use outward-facing microphones to detect external sounds and produce anti-noise to counter them. An inward-facing microphone also listens for unwanted sounds inside the ear, which the AirPods counter with anti-noise. The result is noise reduction, not guaranteed silence. Apple says ANC works best when AirPods Pro fit well.
When should you use Transparency mode?
Transparency mode lets outside sound in, making it useful when you want to hear what is happening around you while wearing AirPods. It is the direct choice when environmental awareness matters more than reducing outside noise. Apple says Transparency also works best when AirPods Pro fit well.

What does Adaptive Audio do?
Adaptive Audio blends ANC and Transparency and varies how much environmental sound you hear as conditions change. Apple describes it as controlling the noise level based on changing conditions in your environment. It is not a third fixed level between the other two modes: it adjusts automatically, and supported models let you tune how much ambient sound it allows.
That makes Adaptive Audio useful when your surroundings change and you do not want to choose ANC or Transparency each time. If you prefer a specific, steady listening behavior, select ANC or Transparency directly.

- Adaptive Audio changes the balance between noise cancellation and outside sound.
- Personalized Volume adjusts media volume based on environmental conditions and your volume preferences over time.
- Conversation Awareness lowers media volume and enhances voices in front of you when you start speaking. Apple says it restores the volume and original listening mode after the conversation.
Which AirPods support these modes?
Apple’s current support documentation lists AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 for Adaptive Audio. Its listening-mode overview also lists AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Max 1 for ANC and Transparency. Availability can depend on the AirPods model, compatible device, operating system, and firmware; check the current settings for your model if a mode is missing. How to switch modes on iPhone or iPad
- Wear and connect your AirPods to the iPhone or iPad.
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the volume control.
- Choose Listening Mode, then select ANC, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio if your model supports it.
On supported AirPods, adjust Adaptive Audio’s ambient-sound balance with the slider shown in the listening controls. Apple also documents switching modes using AirPods controls and through Mac settings or Control Center. The exact labels and slider presentation can vary by software version.
