Diesel exhaust and ground-level ozone can react with floral chemicals in the air, altering the odor blends bees use as cues. Laboratory and field studies have measured effects on odor recognition, insect visits and pollination under particular conditions—but they do not show that pollution makes all bees unable to find flowers.
The key distinction is between disrupting a flower’s scent before a bee detects it and directly affecting the bee’s own sense of smell. Those are different mechanisms, and the evidence for them is not the same.

Why flower scent matters to bees
Flowers release mixtures of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs: chemicals that evaporate readily and travel through the air. A bee can use these odors as information. A scent may help it locate a flower from a distance, then help it identify or recognize the flower as it gets closer. Floral odor is one part of a bee’s search, not its only source of information; bees also use visual and other cues.

A useful way to think about a floral scent is as a blend rather than a single smell. The identity and relative amounts of its components can matter. If the blend changes, a bee that has learned to associate the original odor with a flower may have more difficulty recognizing the altered one—even if some of the original odor remains in the air.

In their 2013 study, Robbie D. Girling and colleagues described honeybees as having a sensitive sense of smell and an ability to learn and remember odors. Their experiment tested whether a changed floral odor blend was still recognizable to trained bees, rather than whether bees could find every flower in a natural landscape. (Scientific Reports, 2013)
How pollution can change a flower’s scent
Pollutants can transform the signal in the air
Reactive pollutants, including nitrogen oxides associated with diesel exhaust and ground-level ozone, can react with floral VOCs as the compounds travel through the air. That chemistry can remove or transform components of the scent blend, changing its composition and proportions. The result is not necessarily that every flower simply smells weaker: some compounds may disappear, while others can be transformed or change in abundance.
For a bee, the practical consequence may be a cue that is less reliable or recognizable. A flower’s scent could become harder to distinguish from the odor the bee learned, or its useful signal might not travel as far. The outcome depends on the pollutant, the compounds in the scent, the plant and the exposure conditions. A chemical change to an odor is not, by itself, proof that a bee cannot locate the flower.
A controlled diesel-exhaust experiment
In 2013, Girling and colleagues exposed a synthetic blend of eight oilseed-rape floral chemicals to diesel-polluted air. Two components, α-farnesene and α-terpinene, became undetectable within one minute and remained undetectable during the study’s two-hour observation. The researchers identified nitrogen oxides as an important cause of the degradation.

The team had trained honeybees to recognize the full blend. When those two components were removed, the bees were less able to recognize the changed blend. This links a measured chemical change to a measured recognition effect in a controlled laboratory task. It does not establish that every oilseed-rape flower, every diesel exposure or every bee will have the same response, nor that a bee will fail to find the flower using other cues. (Girling et al., Scientific Reports, 2013)
What field evidence says about visits and pollination
A 2022 free-air fumigation study tested elevated diesel exhaust and ozone, separately and in combination. In the conditions of that experiment, the researchers reported 62–70% fewer locally occurring wild and managed insect pollinators and 83–90% fewer flower visits. Three measures of pollination and yield for a self-fertile test plant declined by 14–31%.
Those figures describe outcomes in that field study, not a universal decline in bees or pollination. The pollinator counts covered local wild and managed insects, not bees alone; the abstract attributes the effects to changes in groups including bees, flies, moths and butterflies. Likewise, the pollination and yield results were measured for the study’s test plant, not for crops generally. The abstract says the elevated pollutant levels were lower than those considered safe under current air-quality standards, but that statement does not turn the experiment’s percentages into predictions for every location or exposure. (Ryalls et al., Environmental Pollution, 2022)
Field results matter because they move beyond an odor-recognition task and measure insect activity and plant outcomes. They still need to be read in context: a fumigation experiment examines defined exposure conditions and a particular local insect community. Its findings support concern that pollution can affect pollination services, but they do not quantify the effect for every landscape, plant or bee population.

Does ozone damage a bee’s sense of smell?
Not necessarily. Ozone can change floral odors in the air, but that is different from ozone directly impairing the bee’s sensory organs. A 2016 study measured antennal responses in western honeybees after ozone exposure. Responses to one tested compound, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, decreased. Responses to two other tested floral volatiles, linalool and 2-phenylethanol, did not.
The authors said their results did not provide evidence that damage to the olfactory system impaired honeybee pollination for those two attractive signals. The result is compound-specific: it does not establish that ozone has no direct sensory effect under any condition, but it does caution against treating every change in a bee’s response as injury to its sense of smell. In one mechanism, pollution alters the flower’s odor before it reaches the bee; in the other, exposure changes an antennal response. (PLOS ONE, 2016)
Why some flower scents may be more vulnerable than others
Pollution does not affect every floral blend identically. The compounds that make up a scent differ among plant species, and compounds differ in how they respond to pollutants. As a result, the same polluted air need not produce the same change in every flower’s odor—or the same recognition outcome for every bee.

In the model analysis, response rates decreased when odors crossed a modeled degradation threshold. The authors reported that a 15-degree odor-structure disruption threshold correlated with a 50% decrease in honeybee responses across multiple datasets. That figure is a result of the model and the datasets it analyzed, not a universal sensory threshold measured directly in every bee or flower.

The analysis also predicted crop-to-crop variation: canola scent was especially vulnerable in the model, while apple scent was more resilient. This is a predictive comparison, not a field trial showing that apple pollination is unaffected or that canola pollination always declines by a specified amount. It helps explain why a single broad claim about “flowers” can hide important differences in scent chemistry. (Sprayberry et al., Communications Earth & Environment, 2026)

The studies measure different links in a possible chain: pollution exposure, chemical change to odor, recognition by a bee, insect visits and plant outcomes. They are complementary, but they are not interchangeable. A laboratory change in a scent component is not itself a pollination measurement; a field decrease in visits does not, by itself, show that direct damage to bee antennae caused it.
| Evidence | What was measured | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Girling et al., 2013, laboratory blend assay | Changes to two components in a synthetic eight-chemical oilseed-rape scent blend under diesel-polluted air, and trained honeybee recognition of the blend | A particular diesel-related exposure can alter a floral odor blend and reduce recognition of the changed blend | That all flowers become unfindable, or that all bees respond the same way |
| Ryalls et al., 2022, free-air fumigation | Local insect counts, flower visits and three pollination and yield measures for a self-fertile test plant under elevated diesel exhaust and ozone | Pollutant exposure in the experiment was associated with fewer insect pollinators and visits, and lower test-plant measures | A global or bee-only percentage decline, or an identical effect in every landscape and crop |
| Western honeybee antennal study, 2016 | Responses to three tested volatile compounds after ozone exposure | Direct antennal effects can differ by compound | A general impairment of honeybee olfaction or pollination |
| Sprayberry et al., 2026, perceptual model | Modeled recognition responses using published honeybee datasets and crop scent profiles | Predicted vulnerability varies across crop scents, with canola more vulnerable and apple more resilient in the analysis | Field-measured pollination outcomes across all crops |
Taken together, the evidence supports a specific, qualified conclusion: air pollution can disrupt floral scent cues and can be associated with reduced odor recognition or pollinator activity in studied settings. How large an effect is, and which flowers or insects are affected, depends on exposure, scent chemistry and context.
What this means for gardens and pollination
For a gardener or grower, the studies do not provide a simple way to calculate how many visits a particular flower will lose based on local pollution levels. The field percentages should not be used as forecasts for a different site, and the model’s crop ranking should not be read as a guarantee about an individual orchard or field. The evidence instead identifies a potential pathway: pollutants can alter the odor information that helps insects find and recognize flowers, and measured consequences can extend to visits and pollination in particular experimental conditions.
Best Value
It is also important not to confuse this outdoor chemical process with indoor air quality. The studies described here concern pollutant reactions with floral odors in air and, separately, bee antennal responses; they do not establish that an indoor air purifier, monitor or other consumer device can fix the outdoor mechanism. Nor do they show that any single gardening product remedies scent degradation. Claims about a specific intervention would require evidence that it changes the relevant outdoor exposure or pollination outcome.
What remains uncertain
The evidence is strongest when each conclusion stays close to what was measured. The 2013 experiment used a synthetic oilseed-rape blend and trained honeybees; the 2022 study measured local insect activity and a test plant under free-air fumigation; the 2016 work tested antennal responses to three compounds; and the 2026 analysis modeled recognition using published data and crop scent profiles. No one of those designs alone answers how pollution affects every bee species, flower and landscape.
In particular, the field study’s reported abstract does not provide a universal effect size, and its percentages cannot be generalized beyond the study’s conditions. The perceptual model offers a way to compare predicted scent vulnerability, not direct proof of crop-by-crop field outcomes. These boundaries do not erase the concern; they clarify what is known: pollution can change the scent cues bees use, and the consequences depend on the chemical and ecological setting.
