Air-independent propulsion (AIP) lets a non-nuclear submarine generate or use energy underwater without taking in atmospheric oxygen. That means it can reduce how often it must snorkel to run diesel engines and recharge its batteries—helping it stay submerged longer and limiting occasions when it is more exposed near the surface. AIP is a family of technologies, not one standard machine, so the benefit depends on the system and submarine.
Why conventional diesel-electric submarines need to snorkel
A diesel-electric submarine can travel underwater on battery power. But its diesel engines need atmospheric oxygen, so the submarine must reach the surface or raise a snorkel to run them. Running the engines lets it recharge its batteries for further submerged operation.

Snorkelling interrupts that fully submerged operation. AIP addresses this constraint by supplying energy underwater without drawing atmospheric oxygen. It can reduce the need for battery-charging snorkel periods, but it does not make a submarine independent of all fuel, stored reactants, or operating limits.
How AIP works—and why designs differ
AIP is an umbrella term, not a single propulsion plant. The U.S. Office of Naval Research describes undersea power research spanning batteries, engines and motors, and fuel cells; those categories illustrate the range of approaches rather than a performance ranking (ONR’s undersea power overview).

One documented example is Spain’s S-80 system. Navantia says it does not carry hydrogen in stored form: it processes bioethanol onboard to produce hydrogen as needed. The hydrogen and stored oxygen feed a fuel cell, which generates electricity and can recharge the submarine’s batteries while it remains submerged (Navantia’s S-83 AIP testing announcement; Navantia’s S-80 class description).
Other AIP designs need not use that same fuel, reactant, or conversion process. DRDO describes its NMRL system as generating hydrogen onboard for a fuel cell (DRDO’s NMRL page). The shared idea is underwater energy supply without atmospheric intake; the engineering details vary.

How long can an AIP submarine stay underwater?
There is no universal AIP endurance figure in the cited sources, and they do not provide a common independent test basis for comparing systems. Actual submerged endurance depends on the submarine, its energy stores and AIP design, and how it is operated. AIP extends the time before a submarine needs to snorkel for battery charging; it does not justify one number for every AIP-equipped boat.

For the S-80, Navantia says the submarines can operate submerged for “weeks rather than days,” and its 2024 material claims two to three times longer submerged endurance than other conventional submarines. These are manufacturer claims for the S-80, not independently verified figures that apply across AIP systems (Navantia, June 16, 2026; Navantia, 2024 S-80 material).

What current program updates establish
Spain: S-80 and S-83
Navantia reported on June 16, 2026, that testing had begun on the AIP section of S-83 after its equipment was installed. The company said the first test loading used liquid oxygen and bioethanol, and described the system as producing hydrogen to fuel its fuel cell. This is a manufacturer-reported test milestone, not by itself evidence of operational service or independent confirmation of endurance claims.
India: DRDO P-75 AIP
DRDO’s product page says the system’s energy module and subsystems have been designed, while energy-module realization and detailed AIP plug design remain in progress with the submarine designer. The page describes development status; it does not establish a completed installation or entry into service (DRDO’s NMRL page).

India: Kalvari-class integration
On January 23, 2023, India’s Ministry of Defence said the DRDO/NMRL fuel-cell AIP had passed land-based prototype testing and reached industrialisation maturity. It described detailed design and cooperation with Naval Group on integration certification as upcoming steps at that time. That dated announcement does not confirm present fitment or service entry (Ministry of Defence release, January 23, 2023).

What AIP changes—and what it does not
- It can reduce snorkelling: the submarine can obtain energy underwater rather than relying solely on diesel-engine battery charging that requires atmospheric oxygen.
- It supports longer submerged operation: fewer charging snorkel periods can extend time spent underwater and reduce exposure associated with those periods.
- It does not make all AIP submarines equivalent: fuel, carried oxygen or other reactants, conversion process, output, and integration differ by design.
- It does not establish a universal endurance ranking: the cited sources provide no like-for-like independent dataset covering multiple AIP designs.
