AI reading apps can store detailed records of what you read and how you interact with it. Depending on the service, that history may support syncing, organizing a library, recommendations, or optional AI responses. An app may also send some reading context to a separate AI provider; what it collects, transfers, retains, and lets you control is product-specific.
What counts as reading history?
It can be more than a list of books. Readwise’s privacy policy lists book and article titles, metadata, tags, highlights, and annotations, as well as online activity and integration tokens when users connect third-party services. Bookwise’s privacy policy lists shelves, ratings, reviews and notes, reading sessions, page progress, reading duration, goals, and wishlist entries. These are examples of what those services say they collect, not a standard inventory for every reading app.

That information can serve different purposes. Kindle sync, for example, saves reading position, notes, and highlights to Amazon’s servers so they can be used across supported devices and apps. Other reading services may use library details and activity to organize content or provide features. Read the policy for the particular app and feature you use rather than assuming every service handles the same data.
Does an app send your highlights to an AI company?
It may, but the data flow depends on the product and whether its AI feature is enabled. The reading app and the AI provider can be separate parties: the app may send selected information to the provider to generate a response, while retaining other account or reading data itself.

Bookwise says that, when AI is enabled, it sends prompts, recent conversation history, book information, ratings, reading progress, shelves, and genre context to Anthropic for responses. The policy says it does not send the user’s email address, name, or payment details to Anthropic. Bookwise also says AI is not sent data until a user enables the feature and that AI can be turned off in settings. These details describe Bookwise’s stated practice, not a rule for other apps.
Readwise says its AI features use OpenAI. Its privacy and security FAQ says it has opted out of OpenAI API content being used for model training and that content received through that API is not allowed to be saved to OpenAI’s servers. That statement is specific to Readwise’s API use; it should not be read as a guarantee about other services or AI products.

Are reading notes used to train AI models?
There is no single answer for all AI reading apps. Readwise says it opted out of training use for content sent through its OpenAI API. Bookwise says data sent to Anthropic is not used to train models under Bookwise’s Anthropic API terms. Those are vendor statements about particular integrations and scopes, not independent audits or universal promises.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTraining is only one question to check. Look for what information is sent, how long it is retained, whether it is used for other purposes, and how deletion works. Bookwise says it does not use data sent for AI to advertise to users. If a policy does not clearly address a point, do not assume the answer from another app’s policy applies.

What happens when you turn off sync?
Amazon’s UK Kindle support page says sync is enabled by default and automatically saves reading position, notes, and highlights to Amazon’s servers. Readers can change sync settings on Kindle apps and e-readers. Turning it off can remove cross-device reading position and the Export/Share features for notes; notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while sync is off may be lost when sync is turned back on. Kindle Web continues saving data to Amazon’s servers while sync is off, although that data does not sync to other devices and apps. See Amazon’s Kindle sync guidance before changing the setting.
Sync and AI are separate controls. Turning off synchronization does not necessarily disable an AI feature, and disabling AI does not necessarily stop an app from storing reading history for other functions. Check the relevant settings and the consequences described by that service.

Cloud privacy is not the same as end-to-end encryption
A privacy policy’s limits on use or sharing do not mean only you can technically access content stored in the service. Readwise says Readwise and Reader do not support end-to-end encryption. If you plan to upload sensitive documents or annotations, consider whether the service’s storage and access model is appropriate for that material; do not treat a training-use statement as a substitute for encryption.
Readwise and Reader are related, but distinct
Readwise describes Readwise as a highlight organizer and resurfacing tool, and Reader as a read-it-later app. Its documentation says Reader highlights and notes sync into Readwise. It also explains that externally purchased Kindle or Apple Books content cannot be imported in full into Reader for copyright reasons, and an uploaded EPUB may not retain highlights made on the original platform. The import path and feature matter: check the service where you actually read, save, or annotate rather than assuming one product’s behavior covers the other. See Readwise’s privacy and security documentation and product documentation.

A practical privacy checklist
- Collection: Check whether the app stores titles, progress, session timing, notes, highlights, ratings, or connected-service tokens.
- Purpose: Identify which data supports sync, organization, recommendations, analytics, social features, or AI responses.
- AI transfer: Find the named AI provider, the information sent, and whether the feature is optional or enabled only after you opt in.
- Training, retention, and deletion: Read the current policy for the exact AI integration. Treat a vendor’s statement as applying only to the scope it describes.
- Controls and trade-offs: Check how to disable AI or sync, export or delete data, and which features or unsynced notes may be affected.
- Security model: Look for an explicit statement about end-to-end encryption; cloud storage and a provider transfer raise distinct access questions.
Policies and settings can change, so review the current terms and controls for the app and feature you use, especially before sharing sensitive reading material.
