How AI Photo Editing Changes Image Quality, Resolution, and Authenticity

AI editing can change depicted content, while upscaling can create plausible detail rather than recover it. Labels and provenance help explain an image’s history but cannot verify that it is true.

AI photo editing can change both how an image looks and what it depicts. Upscaling can increase pixel dimensions and make an image appear sharper, but it cannot prove that newly visible fine detail was present in the original. Provenance labels and credentials can document parts of an image’s recorded history; they cannot, by themselves, establish whether the image is true.

To assess a photo, separate three questions: what changed in its pixels, how much the enlarged result can be trusted to match its source, and what reliable history—if any—travels with the file.

What an AI edit can change

Some AI tools adjust presentation: they may alter color, lighting, sharpness, or the appearance of an existing area. Generative tools can go further by creating or replacing pixels. An edit that removes an object or fills in a background, for example, may produce a plausible scene that was not captured by the camera. The result can look natural while still changing the image’s content.

That distinction matters because “edited” does not always mean “generatively changed.” A conventional adjustment can change how existing information is displayed without adding a new depicted object; a generative edit can synthesize visual content. An edit label can identify a category of processing, but it does not necessarily describe every change or explain how much of the picture was affected.

Google says Photos identifies photos and videos edited with generative AI tools, including Magic Eraser, with an “Edited with AI tools” label in supported contexts. The label is useful context, not a detailed audit of every pixel or a verdict on the image’s truth. See Google Photos’ explanation of AI-edit identification.

What higher resolution does—and does not—mean

Resolution usually refers to pixel dimensions: the number of pixels across and down an image. An upscaler can produce a larger file by generating additional pixels. The result may also look sharper or show more apparent texture. But those outcomes do not establish that the added fine structure was present in the original capture.

When source detail is limited, an AI model estimates what a plausible higher-resolution version could look like. The output is a reconstruction, and some tools are designed to add creative detail rather than closely preserve the source. That distinction is especially important for faces, small text, fine textures, edges, and documentary or evidentiary images. A convincing-looking result is not necessarily a faithful record.

The challenge is not unique to a particular current editor. A 2017 paper on single-image super-resolution described recovering fine texture at large scaling factors as a central difficulty. It supports a general caution about the task, not a present-day ranking of products or proof about how a particular tool performs. See the 2017 super-resolution paper.

How Photoshop’s documented upscaling choices differ

Adobe’s Photoshop documentation, last updated May 20, 2026, describes Generative Upscale with 2× and 4× output options and three model choices. Their stated aims differ, so “AI upscale” should not be treated as one uniform process.

Photoshop model Documented aim Scale options Output limit
Firefly Restoration 2× or 4× Adobe sets a model-specific maximum; the documentation’s limit should be checked for the chosen model and current version.
Topaz Gigapixel Detail preservation 2× or 4× Adobe sets a model-specific maximum; the documentation’s limit should be checked for the chosen model and current version.
Topaz Bloom Creative detail addition 2× or 4× Adobe sets a model-specific maximum; the documentation’s limit should be checked for the chosen model and current version.

The table summarizes Adobe’s descriptions, not an independent quality test. The vendor documentation gives different maximum output limits for these models, but a limit is a technical ceiling, not a recommendation or a promise of faithful detail. Check Adobe’s current Generative Upscale documentation for the applicable model limits and feature availability before choosing settings.

Adobe’s Firefly API documentation separately describes an upsampling use case for user assets that is designed to preserve the original and avoid artificial or hallucinated content, and another for generated images focused on coherent fine detail. Those are vendor-stated design goals; they are not independent evidence that every output will meet them. The distinction is useful: a workflow intended to preserve an existing photograph has a different goal from one intended to make a generated image more coherent.

How to inspect an AI-upscaled image

Use the source file as the reference whenever possible. Viewing an enlarged result on its own can make synthesized detail feel authoritative simply because it is crisp. A comparison cannot reveal the model’s internal process, but it can help you spot where the result diverges from the captured image.

  1. Keep an untouched source. Save or duplicate the original before editing. Do not overwrite the only copy; comparison and recovery both depend on having a reference.
  2. Record what the edit is for. A larger image for casual viewing may tolerate a plausible enhancement. A record, report, archival image, or other context where accuracy matters calls for a stricter standard: avoid generative changes that could be mistaken for captured detail.
  3. Compare source and output at the same crop. Align the same face, sign, edge, or texture, and compare at a consistent displayed size. A whole-image view can hide local changes.
  4. Inspect at 100% view. Look closely at facial features, letters and numbers, object boundaries, repeated patterns, and fine texture. Watch for changed shapes, invented marks, smearing, halos, or details that appear only in the enlarged version.
  5. Choose the model according to the goal. A detail-preservation-oriented option and a creative-detail option are not interchangeable. If source fidelity matters, avoid choosing a creative-detail mode merely because its result looks more polished.
  6. Retain the edited copy separately and disclose material generative changes when context requires it. A clear record of which version is the source and which is edited helps prevent an enhanced image from being mistaken for an untouched capture.

These checks can reveal visible differences; they do not prove that every unchanged-looking region is faithful or that every artifact came from AI. No product comparison or universal accuracy rate follows from the available evidence.

What Content Credentials can tell you

Content Credentials are based on the C2PA standard and can carry information about an image’s origin and editing history. When present and intact, they can help answer a limited but useful question: what history was recorded for this file? Google says editing an image that already has valid Content Credentials in Photos can add information to its C2PA record.

Credentials are not a truth detector. Google Photos Help states: “Content Credentials don’t tell you if a photo or video is real or fake, but you can use the information with the photo or video’s content to make informed decisions.” A record of editing does not establish that the depicted event is false; a record of origin does not establish that a caption is accurate.

Nor does the absence of a credential establish that a photo is authentic or manipulated. The history may not have been recorded, may not be available in the app or workflow, or may not travel with the copy being examined. Treat the credential as one piece of context, not a pass/fail test. Adobe Research describes metadata, fingerprinting, and watermarking as complementary provenance approaches, rather than interchangeable guarantees. Its discussion is available in Adobe Research’s article on provenance technologies.

Why labels and credential support vary

Whether you see an AI-edit label or C2PA information depends on the app, platform, and workflow. Google’s announcement describes support for C2PA credentials in Google Photos, first for Pixel 10 and then through a gradual Android and iOS rollout. It also describes existing IPTC metadata for AI-edited images and SynthID for images edited with Reimagine. These are different mechanisms and should not be conflated: a visible label, embedded metadata, and a credential are not automatically the same record.

Google also notes that Content Credentials are not available on Google Photos Web. Because the announced support is platform-dependent and rolling out over time, behavior on one device or in one app does not establish what another user will see. For current details, check Google’s Photos announcement alongside the relevant Photos Help page.

In practical terms, a missing label in a particular interface is not enough to conclude that no AI editing occurred. Conversely, a label that says AI tools were used does not reveal by itself which regions changed, whether the change was generative, or whether the photo’s claims are true.

A practical way to judge authenticity

“Is this photo authentic?” can mean several things: Is it an unaltered camera capture? Does it accurately depict the event it claims to show? Has it been edited in a way that changes meaning? Does its file carry a trustworthy history? Those questions require different evidence, and neither visual polish nor a single credential answers all of them.

  • Start with the claim. Identify what the image is being used to assert. A heavily enhanced image may be acceptable as an illustration but unsuitable as evidence of a fine detail.
  • Separate appearance from content. Color or sharpness changes affect presentation; removing, adding, or reconstructing depicted elements can affect what the image appears to show.
  • Compare versions when possible. A source file and an edited output can show visible changes. Preserve both rather than relying on memory or a screenshot of the result.
  • Read provenance narrowly. Use credentials and other history information to understand recorded origin or edits, but do not treat them as proof of the scene or caption.
  • Use corroboration for consequential claims. When a photo matters as evidence, seek context and independent corroboration rather than asking an upscaler or metadata field to settle the question.

The right standard depends on use. For casual viewing, a plausible reconstruction may be a reasonable aesthetic choice. For a documentary record, journalism, scientific material, or evidence, invented or materially altered details can mislead even when the result looks realistic. In those cases, retain the original and explain what processing was applied.

How common AI editing is—and what that statistic means

Adobe Research reported in 2026 that 39% of professional photographers use AI tools daily in their standard editing work. Adobe says the survey covered 2,000 creative professionals across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. This is a survey finding about a specified professional sample, not an estimate for all photographers or the public, and it says nothing by itself about whether AI improves image quality. See Adobe Research’s 2026 survey report.

Frequent use also does not make every output generative or deceptive. The meaningful questions are what the particular tool did, what the output is being used to claim, and whether the editing history and source are available for comparison.
