To generate an e-way bill, sign in to the official GST e-way bill portal, enter the transaction and movement details from your invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan, check them, and submit. If the goods are not transported or the movement does not match the bill, the generator can cancel it within 24 hours—unless a proper officer has verified it—and create a corrected bill if needed. First confirm that the particular movement is covered by the applicable GST rules; the portal’s general ₹50,000 description is not a universal applicability test.
Guidance checked: 13 October 2026. E-way bill procedures and validations can change. Use the official E-Way Bill System portal and its current notices and training material rather than relying on screenshots or menu instructions that may have become outdated.

What an e-way bill does—and when you may need one
An e-way bill is an electronic document associated with the movement of goods under GST. The official system describes its general coverage in relation to goods movements exceeding ₹50,000 for supply, reasons other than supply, or inward supply from an unregistered person. That figure is a general description, not a rule that every movement above ₹50,000 automatically requires a bill. Whether one is required can depend on the transaction, goods, movement and applicable exemptions or other rules.
Before generating a bill, check the current requirements for the specific movement. The official system portal and updates page is a starting point for system information and dated notices; it does not replace checking the applicable GST rules for your case. The portal describes the system as intended for GST-registered persons and enrolled transporters.

Who normally uses the system?
A GST-registered person may generate a bill for a movement connected with the business, and an enrolled transporter may use the system for transport operations. The person who generates the bill is important later: the official cancellation instructions limit cancellation to the generator. If a transporter created the bill, the taxpayer should not assume that the taxpayer can cancel it from a different account. Confirm who generated the bill and retain that account’s reference.
For a one-off movement, the web portal is usually the most direct route. Transporters or businesses that generate many bills can also examine the SMS, mobile, site-to-site, API and GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) modes described by the official system. Those alternatives require their own account, device or software setup; they are not prerequisites for ordinary portal use.
What to prepare before you start
Have the source document and transport information ready. The official FAQ identifies a tax invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan as the relevant underlying document, and calls for transporter identification plus a transporter document number or vehicle number, as applicable. The portal uses GSTIN-based registration and authentication.
Recommended Free Tools
- Transaction document: the applicable invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan, with the details you will use to describe the transaction.
- Transport information: the transporter ID and, as applicable, the transporter document number or vehicle number.
- Portal access: the GSTIN-based account and authentication needed to use the system.
- Applicability check: confirmation that the movement requires an e-way bill under current rules, including any relevant exception.
- Internal contact: identify the staff member or transporter who will review the entries and who will retain the generated reference.
Keep the source document available while entering the details. Transcription errors are easier to prevent than to correct after generation. Compare the document number, date, parties, value and goods description with the records you are using, and check the transport information against the carrier’s instructions. Do not fill a field from memory merely because a value seems reasonable.
The official E-Way Bill System FAQ explains access, required information and limitations on changes after submission. If the movement is unusual, involves more than one transport arrangement or may fall under an exemption, resolve the applicability question before opening the form.
How to generate an e-way bill
Use the official portal at ewaybillgst.gov.in. The official computer-based training index lists a module named “Generate-new-ewaybill-latest.” Since screen labels and validation can change, use that module for the current form sequence instead of relying on a field-by-field walkthrough that has not been verified against the live portal.
- Open the portal and sign in. Use your GSTIN-based account and complete the portal’s authentication. Make sure you are working in the correct taxpayer or transporter account.
- Open the new e-way bill workflow. Follow the current “Generate-new-ewaybill-latest” training module in the official training index for the precise menu and screen sequence.
- Enter the transaction and movement details. Use the underlying document and transport records you prepared. Do not guess values or select an option simply because it appears plausible; the exact fields and choices are determined by the current portal form and your transaction.
- Pause at each validation. If the portal rejects or flags an entry, resolve the discrepancy using the underlying records. Do not work around a validation by choosing a different description or document type unless that is factually correct.
- Review the entries before submitting. Compare the details against the source document and transport information. The FAQ says some entries can be edited before submission, while edits to some fields are restricted after commodity details have been entered.
- Submit and retain the resulting e-way bill reference. Save the number and the generated record in the business file. Check the generated bill against the movement documents that will accompany the goods. The official material cited here does not establish a universal requirement to print the bill, so do not treat printing as a prerequisite based on this guide.
A practical pre-submission review
Use a second-person review when the value or movement is material. One person can read from the invoice or delivery challan while another compares the entries displayed by the portal. At a minimum, verify:
- the GSTIN-based account used to generate the bill;
- the document type and identifying details taken from the invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan;
- the parties and movement information shown in the form;
- the transporter identification and the transporter document number or vehicle number, as applicable; and
- that the resulting reference is recorded where the dispatch team and transporter can find it.
This check matters because the official FAQ does not treat a generated bill like an ordinary draft. Once generated, it generally cannot be edited or deleted. A careful review before submission is therefore part of the procedure, not an optional administrative step.

Can the e-way bill be modified or edited?
The official FAQ says that an e-way bill generally cannot be edited after generation and that only Part-B may be updated. That limited update facility is not permission to rewrite the transaction, replace the underlying document or correct every error in place. If a material detail is wrong, use the cancellation rules where they permit cancellation and then generate a fresh bill with accurate information.
Before submission, some entries can be changed, although the FAQ notes that the system restricts edits to some fields after commodity details have been entered. The exact point at which a field becomes unavailable depends on the current portal workflow. Treat the displayed values as final only after comparing them with the source records.
Check the bill before the goods move
Generation is not a substitute for checking the bill against the actual transaction. After generation, the e-way bill generally cannot be edited or deleted; the FAQ says only Part-B may be updated. If a material detail is wrong, do not assume you can revise the entire bill in place. Where cancellation is allowed, cancel the incorrect bill and generate a fresh one with the correct information.

- Confirm that the bill reflects the underlying invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan.
- Check that the movement information corresponds to the transport arrangements.
- Keep the e-way bill reference available and ensure the movement documents match the bill.
- Tell the dispatch or transport team if the original bill is being cancelled so that an obsolete reference is not used for the movement.
The details and exceptions are described in the official FAQ and e-way bill questions and answers.
When can an e-way bill be cancelled?
The generator may cancel an e-way bill within 24 hours of its generation if the goods are not transported or are not transported in accordance with the details on the bill. A bill verified by a proper officer cannot be cancelled. These are conditions on the cancellation facility, not permission to use cancellation as a general edit function.
The 24-hour period runs from generation, so identify the generation time immediately and do not wait until dispatch staff discover a discrepancy. The cancellation reason should match what actually happened: no transport took place, or the transport did not occur in accordance with the bill. Cancellation should not be used merely to avoid correcting records or to replace a bill that has already been verified.
The official cancellation FAQ describes the 24-hour limit and circumstances. The separate cancellation API documentation also identifies the generator-only and time limits. Its API request details should not be assumed to reproduce the fields or screen sequence of the ordinary portal form.

- Confirm the bill qualifies for cancellation. Check that you are the generator, the 24-hour period has not expired, and the bill has not been verified by a proper officer. The stated grounds are that the goods were not transported or were not transported as described on the bill.
- Sign in to the e-way bill portal. Open the current cancellation workflow using the “Cancel-ewaybill” training module as the screen guide.
- Select the relevant bill and provide the requested cancellation information. Use the portal’s current form and instructions. The API documentation identifies an e-way bill number, cancellation reason code and remarks field for an API request, but that does not confirm the portal form’s exact fields.
- Review the cancellation details. Make sure the bill number is the one connected with the failed or changed movement and that the reason describes the actual event.
- Submit the cancellation and keep the outcome with your records. If a corrected bill is needed, generate a new one from the accurate transaction and movement details; cancellation does not itself amend or replace the original bill.
What happens after cancellation?
Cancellation ends the use of that generated bill for the stated movement; it does not alter the invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan and does not create a corrected e-way bill automatically. If the goods will move under different or corrected details, assess the requirement again and generate a new bill using the accurate records. Keep the cancelled reference, the reason and the replacement reference together so the business file explains the sequence.
If no transport will occur, do not generate a replacement merely to keep a number on file. If transport will occur later or under different details, wait until the transaction and movement information are correct before generating the new bill.
If the bill cannot be cancelled
If more than 24 hours have passed, or a proper officer has verified the bill, the cancellation conditions described in the official FAQ are not met. Do not assume that a portal cancellation is still available or that generating another bill resolves every issue. The official sources cited here do not establish one remedy for every such situation. Check current official guidance or consult a qualified GST professional with the bill and transaction details before deciding what to do next.

Portal, SMS, mobile and integration options
The official sources describe several ways to work with the e-way bill system. The choice depends on whether the task is occasional or part of a high-volume operation and whether business software needs to exchange data with the system. The sources do not provide a comparative cost, speed or reliability ranking, so do not choose a mode on an unsupported promise of being cheaper or faster.
| Mode | What the official material establishes | When it may be relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Web portal | The common portal supports GSTIN-based access and ordinary bill generation and cancellation workflows. | A direct route for users completing the task through the official website. |
| SMS or mobile | Listed among the system’s available modes in the official FAQ. | For users whose task and setup fit those modes; check the current official instructions. |
| Site-to-site integration, API or GSP workflow | Official materials describe integration options; API documentation presents API use for taxpayers or transporters generating many bills. | For operations seeking to connect existing business software to e-way bill workflows. Integration is an option, not a prerequisite for ordinary portal use. |
API or GSP use should be evaluated as a process and software decision, not as a way around the legal conditions for generation or cancellation. The cancellation API documentation still identifies the generator-only rule and 24-hour limit. An integration must therefore preserve the same checks, references and records that a user would apply on the portal.
See the official FAQ for modes and the API introduction for integration context.

Review the system updates and API announcements when a notice may affect your transaction or integration. A dated system notice is not, by itself, a full statement of which statutory requirements apply to a particular movement. If a notice changes a validation, update internal checklists and software rules before relying on the old process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating ₹50,000 as an automatic rule: the portal’s description is general; applicability still depends on the facts and current GST rules.
- Using an unverified document number: enter details from the invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan and reconcile them before submission.
- Assuming every field remains editable: the FAQ limits post-generation changes and says only Part-B may be updated.
- Waiting past 24 hours: cancellation is time-limited from generation.
- Trying to cancel another person’s bill: the stated facility is for the generator.
- Ignoring officer verification: a bill verified by a proper officer cannot be cancelled under the official FAQ.
- Confusing cancellation with correction: cancellation does not amend the original transaction document or automatically create a replacement bill.
- Relying on old screenshots: use the current “Generate-new-ewaybill-latest” and “Cancel-ewaybill” training modules and dated notices.
Official training and reference pages
For the generation screen sequence, use the official computer-based training index and its “Generate-new-ewaybill-latest” module. For cancellation, use the same index and the “Cancel-ewaybill” module. Keep the FAQ, questions and answers, cancellation API page and the system updates page as reference points when the portal displays a different validation or menu label.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the common portal for generation of an e-way bill?
The official common portal is https://ewaybillgst.gov.in. Use the GSTIN-based account and authentication provided by the system, and check the official notices for current operating information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs an e-way bill required for every movement above ₹50,000?
No conclusion can be made from the amount alone. The portal’s general description refers to movements exceeding ₹50,000 in specified supply, non-supply and inward-supply contexts, but applicability depends on the transaction, goods, movement and current exemptions or rules.
What documents and details should I have ready?
Have the applicable tax invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan, plus transporter identification and the transporter document number or vehicle number as applicable. You also need access to the relevant GSTIN-based portal account.
Can the e-way bill be modified or edited after generation?
The official FAQ says an e-way bill generally cannot be edited after generation and that only Part-B may be updated. If a material detail is wrong, use cancellation where permitted and generate a fresh bill with correct information.
Can the e-way bill be deleted?
The official system says an e-way bill cannot be deleted. Deletion is different from cancellation, and cancellation is available only under the stated conditions and time limit.
Who can cancel an e-way bill?
The generator can cancel it. The cancellation API documentation and official FAQ describe a generator-only facility, so confirm which taxpayer or transporter account generated the bill.
Best Value
How long do I have to cancel it?
The generator must act within 24 hours of generation. The bill also must qualify because the goods were not transported or were not transported in accordance with the bill, and it must not have been verified by a proper officer.
Can I cancel a bill after a proper officer has verified it?
No. The official FAQ states that a bill verified by a proper officer cannot be cancelled through this facility.
What if the 24-hour period has expired?
Do not assume that the portal will permit cancellation or that a second bill solves the issue. The official material cited here does not give one remedy for every fact pattern; check current official guidance or obtain qualified GST advice.
Do I have to print the e-way bill?
The official material cited here does not establish a universal print requirement. Retain the generated reference and ensure that the movement documents and bill details match; follow any current official instruction applicable to your situation.
Which route is best for a high-volume business?
The official system lists portal, SMS, mobile, site-to-site, API and GSP modes. API or other integration may suit a taxpayer or transporter generating many bills, but setup and software requirements differ. The official material does not rank these modes by cost, speed or reliability.
Where can I see the current generation and cancellation screens?
Use the official computer-based training index at docs.ewaybillgst.gov.in/html/CBTForm.html. It lists “Generate-new-ewaybill-latest” and “Cancel-ewaybill”; use those modules rather than stale screenshots.
The Bottom Line
Confirm that the movement is covered by current GST rules, gather the invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan and transport details, and generate the bill through ewaybillgst.gov.in. Review every entry before submission because the bill generally cannot be edited or deleted afterward. If the goods are not transported or are not transported as described, the generator may cancel within 24 hours, provided a proper officer has not verified the bill; then create a new bill if the goods will move under corrected details. Check the official FAQ, training modules and dated notices whenever the portal workflow changes.
