AI learning platforms are changing high school by making practice, feedback, tutoring and progress information available in new ways—but their features alone do not show that students learn more. The category includes both sequenced adaptive lessons and conversational AI tutors, and evidence about their effects is mixed. What matters is the particular tool, the way it is used in instruction, and whether teachers can oversee it.
What counts as an AI learning platform?
The label covers different kinds of technology, not one uniform product. The OECD describes a range from general-purpose conversational assistants to purpose-built, curriculum-aligned systems that guide students through sequenced content and report progress to teachers. Their design affects what students do and what teachers can see.

Adaptive curriculum and practice systems
In a typical mathematics sequence, a student receives instruction, works through practice, gets immediate feedback and then moves through content adaptively. A system may use student responses to guide the next activity and give teachers information about progress. The OECD’s 2025 overview names Khan Academy, BrainPOP, Carnegie Learning’s MATHia and Rori, a WhatsApp-based tutor, as examples of education tools; they differ in design and should not be treated as a single validated class of products. A conversational tutor lets a student ask questions and receive responses in a back-and-forth exchange. Some are designed to tutor or provide feedback; others are general-purpose assistants not built around a particular course. The experience can feel more like asking a person for help than completing a fixed exercise, but an answer that sounds confident may still be wrong or poorly matched to the lesson.

UNESCO describes Khan Academy as a nonprofit learning platform with materials spanning mathematics, science, computing and the humanities. Its profile reports that it reaches learners in over 190 countries and is localized into more than 50 languages. The same profile describes Khanmigo as an AI-powered assistant for tutoring, feedback and lesson planning. Those are organizational reach and product-description figures, not independent findings that the tools improve learning. UNESCO Global Education Coalition profile
What can these tools change for students and teachers?
Depending on the system and classroom setup, AI platforms can make practice and feedback more immediate, offer students another way to ask questions, and give teachers information about student progress. These capabilities may help teachers identify topics that need attention or give students more opportunities to work through material. They do not replace instructional decisions: an activity still needs to fit the course, and someone must decide what to do with the information it produces.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- For students: sequenced exercises can offer practice and feedback; conversational tutors can provide another route to ask for help.
- For teachers: some purpose-built systems report student progress, which can inform follow-up or classroom planning.
- For schools: the tool adds an instructional and operational choice, including how it fits the curriculum, how staff oversee use and what student information it handles.
These are possible functions, not proof of better outcomes. A platform’s dashboard, adaptive sequence or tutoring feature does not establish that students retain more, transfer skills to new problems or perform better on assessments.
Do AI tutors actually help high school students learn?
There is no single answer for every tool or subject. The OECD’s 2026 Digital Education Outlook describes outcomes as heterogeneous, ranging from accelerated mastery to skill degradation. It warns that when generative AI tools lack guardrails, students face a high risk of offloading cognitive work to the system rather than doing that work themselves. Why the design of the tutor matters
The Outlook discusses a study of nearly 1,000 high-school mathematics students that compared a standard GPT model with a pedagogically engineered tutor. It reports that the engineered tutor mitigated the harm associated with the standard model, but did not produce the artificial performance boost observed in the standard-model group. This is evidence about a particular comparison in mathematics—not a result for every AI tutor, subject, school or learning outcome.
What classroom trials of Khanmigo found
The same OECD Outlook reports mixed quantitative results in Khanmigo classroom trials. Some trials found no statistically significant difference in short-term test scores compared with standard web search. Students also described qualitative benefits: reduced “evaluation apprehension” and feeling safer asking an AI questions they considered “stupid” than asking a teacher. These accounts may matter to classroom experience, but they do not establish improved test performance or long-term learning.

Why older studies may not describe a current tool
The OECD’s 2025 report cautions that much of the evidence on generative AI concerns models that have since been discontinued or updated. Results from a study of an older model cannot simply be assigned to a current platform. A useful comparison needs to identify the version tested, the student group, the subject, the instructional setting, the comparison condition and the outcome measured. - Identify the instructional approach. Is the platform a sequenced adaptive system or open-ended conversational chat? What will students actually do with it during class or homework?
- Check curriculum and subject fit. Does its content align with the course and the material teachers are responsible for teaching? A general-purpose assistant and a course-aligned practice system serve different roles.
- Look for evidence that matches the intended use. Ask whether evaluations involve the relevant age or grade group, subject, setting and outcome—not just a different population or a short demonstration. Distinguish reported engagement or convenience from measured learning.
- Plan teacher visibility and oversight. Determine what teachers can see about student activity and progress, how they can correct misconceptions, and who is responsible when the system gives a poor answer.
- Set expectations for student thinking. Decide which tasks require students to reason independently, when AI assistance is appropriate and how students should verify or explain answers. This matters because the OECD warns that poorly guarded generative tools can encourage cognitive offloading.
- Review data practices and implementation demands. Establish what student information is collected, who can access it, how it is used, and what agreement or school process governs it. Also consider what staff training and ongoing evaluation the tool requires.
The U.S. Department of Education’s July 22, 2025 announcement described federal guidance and proposed grant priorities that included AI-enhanced high-impact tutoring and AI use for individualized learning. It also emphasized engagement with parents and teachers and privacy. The announcement described guidance and a proposed priority at that time; it was not a requirement that every school adopt AI. What should U.S. schools know about student privacy?
In the United States, FERPA generally bars disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records without written consent, subject to conditional exceptions. A vendor’s educational purpose does not by itself establish that a disclosure is permitted. Schools need to examine the facts, the applicable exception and the terms of the arrangement. The Department of Education’s privacy guidance explains the rules and the need to assess applicable conditions. Privacy and Data Sharing
The study exception is specific, not blanket permission
The Department’s study-exception FAQ says a school or agency may disclose personally identifiable information without consent to an organization conducting a qualifying study for or on its behalf, including a study to improve instruction. The organization must have a written agreement specifying the study’s purpose and how the information will be used and destroyed. This exception does not automatically authorize disclosure to any educational app or vendor. Department of Education study-exception FAQ

What AI learning platforms are—and are not—changing
AI platforms can alter how students practice, seek help and receive feedback, while giving teachers new information about progress. But they do not make instruction effective by default. Their effects depend on the tool’s design, the learning task, teacher oversight and the way the school evaluates results. That distinction matters especially with conversational systems: Sal Khan told the UNESCO Courier in 2023 that “Generative AI is not always right, and it can sometimes make up facts,” and said many Khanmigo interactions are anchored in Khan Academy information to reduce the likelihood of going beyond it. His comments explain the product approach at that time; they are not an independent audit of current accuracy. UNESCO Courier interview
