AI image edits can change areas you did not select because a mask usually guides the model rather than acting as a pixel-perfect boundary. The system uses your prompt, the image’s context, and the mask to generate a coherent result; depending on the tool, it may adjust pixels beyond the selected region to blend the edit. For strict preservation, use a workflow that composites the result over the original outside the mask.
How an AI image edit is made
In an inpainting workflow, the editor receives three things: the original image for visual context, a mask indicating the region to regenerate, and a text prompt describing the desired change. The model synthesizes new pixels using all three inputs. Hugging Face Diffusers documents this pattern as passing a base image, mask image, and prompt to an inpainting pipeline (Diffusers inpainting guide).

Some systems are specifically trained or adapted for inpainting. Google describes Imagen Editor as a cascaded diffusion model fine-tuned for text-guided inpainting, with object detectors used to propose masks during training and the original high-resolution image included in its conditioning pipeline (Google Research: Imagen Editor and EditBench). Other editors may use broader prompt-based changes, masks, or structural controls. An inpainting explanation therefore does not describe every AI editor’s implementation.

The mask guides generation; it may not lock pixels
A mask tells the system where a change is wanted, but whether it preserves every other pixel depends on the model and pipeline. Some inpainting-specific checkpoints are trained to create natural transitions and can change unmasked areas to blend the new content with the original. Diffusers documents this tradeoff in its inpainting guide.

The prompt can affect the image the model considers plausible
A prompt is not a pixel-level boundary. Changing its wording can lead a model toward a different overall image rather than a tightly isolated edit. The 2025 D-Edit paper describes prompt-based edits producing different images and spatial masks that models may ignore as challenges in diffusion-model editing; these are research findings about the problem, not a guarantee that every product behaves the same way (AAAI paper on D-Edit).
A partial mask can conflict with the requested change
If you select only part of an object, the model may still see unmasked parts that imply the original object or appearance. A change may also require editing a shadow, reflection, hair edge, or nearby boundary—but only include those elements if you want them changed. Google Research notes that a prompt can be ignored when a mask is small or covers only part of an object, and describes object-mask training as a way to better align prompts with masked regions (Google Research blog).

Blending can trade exact preservation for a more natural seam
Softening the border can make a replacement fit more naturally, but it also means the transition is not a crisp cutoff. In Diffusers, increasing mask-edge blur softens the transition; a low or zero blur keeps the boundary sharper. Its guide also documents compositing the generated result over the original to preserve the unmasked area, with potentially less natural transitions (Diffusers inpainting guide).
How to keep edits more localized
- Choose an inpainting or local-edit mode. Use a tool that lets you select an area when available, rather than relying only on a whole-image prompt.
- Mask the complete intended change. Include object edges and associated shadows or reflections only when they should change. Keep nearby details you want to preserve outside the mask.
- Keep the prompt focused. Describe what should appear in the selected region and add relevant context, such as material, lighting, or viewpoint. Avoid rewriting the entire scene unless the tool expects a full-scene description; prompt conventions vary by product.
- Use crop padding for small edits if supported. Diffusers’
padding_mask_cropworkflow crops around the masked region with padding, processes the crop at higher resolution, and overlays the result on the original. The added context can help with local detail while the overlay retains surrounding pixels. - Set edge blur to suit the boundary. Use softer edges when a blended transition matters; use low or zero blur when the edit needs a sharper edge.
- Composite over the original when exact outside-mask preservation matters. In a workflow that allows it, place the generated image only inside the mask and retain the original outside it. This prioritizes pixel preservation over seamless blending.
- Check the result at full resolution. Inspect the mask boundary and details such as faces, text, repeated objects, and fine edges. If a protected feature changed, restore it from the original or refine the mask and try again.
What editing benchmarks can—and cannot—tell you
Editing ability varies by task and model. Google Research’s summary of human evaluation reports stronger performance on material, color, and size attributes than on count and shape attributes; that finding should not be generalized to every current tool. Its EditBench dataset contains 240 images—120 generated and 120 natural—and assesses attributes, object types, and scenes. The image count describes the benchmark, not the accuracy of commercial editors (Google Research blog).

The Imagen Editor research team describes the central challenge this way: “A key challenge is to generate edits that are faithful to the input text prompt, while consistent with the input image” (Google Research project page). Prompt adherence and image consistency are related goals, but neither implies that every unmasked pixel will remain identical.
