Both can track the same index, but they work differently: ETFs trade on an exchange at market prices, while traditional index mutual funds transact at the applicable NAV. Choose by comparing the actual schemes’ tracking, total costs and transaction workflow—not by expense ratio alone.
What differs: the investment wrapper, not the index
A Nifty index fund and a Nifty ETF can both seek to track an index such as the Nifty 50. They are different ways to buy and hold an index-tracking portfolio, not guarantees of matching returns. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) describes ETFs as funds that track indices such as the Nifty, and separately explains index mutual funds. SEBI’s ETF overview and SEBI’s index mutual fund overview explain the two structures.

How you buy and sell
Nifty ETF: exchange order during market hours
You buy or sell ETF units through a broker on an exchange during market hours. The traded price is a market price, which may differ from the ETF’s NAV. You need the appropriate brokerage and demat setup, and the price you receive depends on execution in the market.

Nifty index mutual fund: transaction at NAV
You invest or redeem through a mutual fund channel rather than placing an exchange order. A traditional mutual fund transaction uses the applicable NAV, which is published after the trading day; it is not an intraday quote. NSE explains this distinction in its ETF and mutual fund comparison.

Compare the trade-offs
| Decision factor | Nifty ETF | Nifty index mutual fund |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction | Buy or sell on an exchange through a broker; trades intraday. | Buy or redeem through mutual fund channels at the applicable NAV. |
| Account workflow | Requires an appropriate brokerage and demat setup for exchange trading. | Does not require an exchange order; access depends on the fund channel. |
| Price and execution | Market price can differ from NAV. Liquidity and the bid–ask spread matter. | Transactions use NAV rather than an intraday market quote. |
| Costs to check | Scheme expense ratio plus any brokerage, demat and trading costs. | Scheme expense ratio, plan type and any applicable transaction charges. |
| Tracking | Check tracking difference and tracking error, as well as execution quality. | Check tracking difference and tracking error for the specific plan and benchmark. |
| May suit | Investors comfortable with exchange orders who value intraday trading. | Investors who prefer fund transactions, including recurring investing through fund channels. |
These are differences in mechanics, not a universal ranking. An ETF’s expense ratio is not its only possible cost, and an index fund’s convenience does not establish that a particular fund tracks better.
How to compare two specific Nifty options
- Match the index. Confirm that both schemes track the same Nifty index, such as the Nifty 50, and compare the same investment horizon. A Nifty 50 ETF is not a like-for-like comparison with a fund tracking a different index.
- Check current expenses and plan type. Use the latest scheme disclosures. For an index mutual fund, identify whether the figure is for the direct or regular plan. The underlying portfolio can be the same, while distribution-related expenses can make the regular plan’s expense ratio higher. See SEBI’s explanation of direct and regular mutual fund plans.
- Compare realized tracking. Review tracking difference—the return gap between a scheme and its benchmark—over matching one-, three- and five-year periods where figures are available. Also examine tracking error, which measures variability in that gap. NSE provides an explanation of index tracking error. Past tracking does not establish future performance.
- For an ETF, assess actual trading conditions. Look at trading volume and the bid–ask spread, and account for your brokerage and demat costs. Do not assume every ETF is liquid or that an exchange trade will match NAV closely.
- Choose the workflow you will use consistently. Decide whether you prefer placing exchange orders through a demat account or transacting through a mutual fund channel at NAV. Your investment amount and frequency can affect how meaningful transaction costs are to your choice.
Tracking gaps can be affected by fund costs, cash holdings, investor flows, corporate actions and index changes. Compare the same benchmark and periods; a low expense ratio by itself does not prove that a scheme delivered the smallest realized return gap.

What the Nifty 50’s popularity figures do—and do not—show
Nifty Indices Limited reported that, as of January 30, 2026, Nifty 50 ETFs represented 49.6% of total equity ETF assets under management (AUM), while Nifty 50 index funds represented 42.6% of total equity index-fund AUM. The denominators are different categories, so these figures are not a direct comparison of absolute AUM or evidence that one wrapper is better. The figures appear in the Nifty 50 whitepaper.

- An ETF may fit if you already use a demat account and broker, want exchange trading during market hours, and are prepared to consider liquidity, spreads and transaction charges.
- An index mutual fund may fit if you prefer to invest through a fund channel at NAV and do not want to place exchange orders. Compare direct and regular plans rather than treating them as interchangeable on cost.
- Either can be reasonable when both track the same index and their costs, tracking record and practical transaction requirements suit your needs.
