AI delivery agents could change courier work by deciding which orders go to people, robots or drones—and by shifting some human effort from driving and walking deliveries to loading, oversight, maintenance and handling exceptions. Current deployments and announcements point to mixed fleets, not a proven wave of courier replacement. No independently measured net job-loss or job-creation figure is established by the available evidence.
What “AI delivery agent” means in this context
The phrase can describe two connected things: software that assigns an order to a delivery method, and a physical machine that carries an order. DoorDash’s Autonomous Delivery Platform, for example, is described as matching orders among Dashers, its Dot robot, drones and sidewalk robots using factors such as speed, cost, location and experience. The dispatcher is software; Dot and other robots are physical delivery equipment.

That distinction matters for workers. Dispatch software can change which orders a courier is offered even when no robot is involved in that specific delivery. A robot changes the physical method for the orders it can handle, but it can still require people to prepare, monitor or resolve parts of the delivery.
Which parts of courier work could change?
Order assignment and routine trips
When a platform can select among people and machines, it may route suitable orders to an autonomous option rather than offer them to a courier. The likely effect would vary by location and order: a short, predictable trip with a straightforward handoff is more amenable to automation than a delivery that requires access help, customer communication or judgment. DoorDash presents its system as multimodal fulfillment and says Dashers will continue to handle the vast majority of its millions of daily deliveries; that is the company’s stated outlook, not an independently verified forecast of future work.

Loading, unloading and handoffs
A robot does not make the whole delivery chain human-free. Serve Robotics’ 2025 Form 10-K lists loading, unloading, maintenance and remote supervision among tasks involving people. Just Eat Takeaway.com’s account of its Zurich pilot describes a monitored robot and a secure customer handoff. These examples show where human work can remain, but they do not establish how many workers are needed or whether such tasks become stable new jobs.
Remote oversight and exception handling
Serve says its robots are designed to operate autonomously in intended environments, while trained remote supervisors can assist in specific, predefined situations. The company’s filing states: “While highly trained remote supervisors are available to assist in specific, predefined situations, the robot is designed to operate safely and independently.” This is the company’s description of its system, not an independent safety finding. In practice, the work mix could include monitoring and responding to exceptions, but the cited sources do not quantify staffing levels or the frequency of interventions.

Work that still calls for human judgment or care
Platforms describe people as useful for orders requiring judgment, customer care or physical assistance. A person may be better suited to a difficult handoff, an unusual access situation or a request that does not fit a robot’s operating limits. Those are plausible task distinctions, not evidence that every platform currently sorts orders this way or that courier roles will be protected in every market.

| Example | What was described | Evidence status and scope |
| DoorDash Dot and dispatch platform | DoorDash described Dot as an all-electric robot that can travel on bike lanes, roads, sidewalks and driveways, with a company-stated maximum speed of up to 20 mph. Its AI dispatcher is intended to assign orders among Dashers, robots and drones. | DoorDash’s September 30, 2025 announcement described an early-access program in Tempe and Mesa, Arizona. The speed is a stated maximum, not an average operating speed; the announcement is not proof of broad availability. |
| Uber and Avride | Uber described a multiyear partnership under which qualifying app users might be offered robot fulfillment. | Uber’s October 3, 2024 announcement named Austin as the initial Uber Eats launch market and Dallas and Jersey City as planned expansions. A plan in that release to scale to hundreds of robots in 2025 is a historical target, not a verified current fleet count. |
| Just Eat Takeaway.com and RIVR | The robot in the Zurich pilot combined wheels and legs, had real-time monitoring and used a secure customer handoff. The company stated a speed of approximately 15 km/h and a 40-litre capacity. | The August 21, 2025 announcement describes a company-reported pilot, not a standardized independent evaluation or proof of wider service availability. Its specifications are company-stated. |
| Serve Robotics | Serve reported approximately 2,000 sidewalk delivery robots deployed across multiple markets. | This is a company-reported milestone in its 2025 Form 10-K filed in 2026. It is not an industry-wide count and says nothing by itself about courier jobs displaced. |
The examples differ in geography, machine type and maturity. An early-access program, a pilot, an announced partnership and a reported fleet milestone are not interchangeable evidence of routine availability everywhere.

Why robots will not fit every order or place
Order and handoff requirements
Suitability depends on more than whether a machine can travel the route. Order size, the delivery distance, building access and the kind of handoff all matter. A sidewalk robot, a larger-capacity robot, a drone and a car have different physical constraints; a person may still be needed where the order or customer situation falls outside those constraints.
Infrastructure and operating conditions
Sidewalks, roads, driveways, campuses and local conditions shape what a robot can do. A 2024 review in European Transport Research Review selected 27 articles after screening and identified operations, infrastructure, regulation and public acceptance as central issues. The authors caution that the literature is limited and findings are difficult to generalize because vehicles and operating environments differ. Its literature search ran in October 2023, so it is best read as a framework for constraints—not a current labor forecast.

Rules vary by jurisdiction and robot
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says the amended Road Traffic Act enabled low-speed, small delivery robots to travel on public roads from April 2023. METI also notes that procedures can vary with a robot’s size, structure, speed and operating mode. Its policy work has considered higher-capacity robots for personal-home delivery, mobile retail and business-to-business transport. These are Japanese policy and use-case examples, not rules that apply in the United States, Switzerland or elsewhere.
What the evidence does—and does not—say about courier jobs
Company announcements establish that specific deployments, pilots and plans exist; they do not measure the overall effect on employment. Serve’s filing discusses possible long-term effects as company expectations, while the academic review describes a limited evidence base whose findings vary by vehicle and context. The reported robot fleet counts and company plans cannot be converted into a number of courier jobs lost or created.

- Ideal Birthday & Kids Intimate Companion: Robot is suitable for kids 6 and older; The infrared control Robot is versatile and vivid can dance, sing, walk, patrol, even can speak.
The more supportable conclusion is that dispatch and task mix could change first in places where machines can reliably handle particular orders. Some routine trips may shift to robots, while people remain involved in deliveries and in operating the systems around them. The scale, pace and net employment effect remain unestablished by the cited evidence.
