How AI Data Center Networking Works: Ethernet, InfiniBand, and Optical Connections Compared

Ethernet and InfiniBand are distinct AI data center fabrics; optical fiber is a physical link option for either. Compare workload needs, operations, topology, and exact link compatibility.

AI data center networks move information among GPUs, servers, and storage so distributed workloads can coordinate. Ethernet and InfiniBand are two ways to build the network fabric; optical fiber is a physical way to carry signals over a link, not a competing fabric. Either fabric can use optical connections when the equipment and link design call for them.

What the network does in an AI data center

A data-center fabric is the interconnection system joining compute nodes and other infrastructure. In an AI cluster, GPUs do not work in isolation: distributed workloads need to exchange data among GPUs and servers, and the network carries that traffic between nodes. If the network does not suit the workload and system design, compute resources may not coordinate as efficiently as the architecture requires.

It helps to distinguish three layers that are often blurred in discussions of AI networking:

  • Compute interconnects connect components within or between systems. NVIDIA’s DGX B300 reference material lists NVLink alongside XDR InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet. NVLink connects GPUs at a different layer from the data-center fabric.
  • Fabric technologies define the networking system connecting nodes. Ethernet and InfiniBand are distinct fabric options.
  • Physical links carry signals between network ports. Those links may use copper or optical connections, depending on the equipment and design.

These choices are related, but not interchangeable. Choosing a fabric does not, by itself, specify the cable, and choosing fiber does not determine which fabric protocol is in use.

How Ethernet carries AI cluster traffic

Ethernet is a family of networking technology used to build data-center fabrics. An AI-oriented Ethernet design can use RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE): a way to carry Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) transport over Ethernet. RDMA allows data to be transferred between systems’ memory without relying on the ordinary CPU-mediated path for every transfer, a capability relevant to high-performance cluster communication.

That description does not mean every Ethernet network is automatically optimized for AI. The performance and behavior depend on the design and equipment, not simply on the word “Ethernet.” NVIDIA describes Spectrum-X as an AI-oriented Ethernet platform combining Spectrum switches with BlueField-3 SuperNICs and ConnectX NICs for GPU-to-GPU, or east-west, networking. Its documentation also describes BlueField-3 connectivity up to 400 Gb/s with RDMA and RoCE acceleration. Those are vendor-specific product descriptions, not general specifications for Ethernet networks.

What RoCE changes—and what it does not

RoCE puts RDMA transport on an Ethernet fabric. It does not turn Ethernet into InfiniBand, nor does it mean that any Ethernet switch and network configuration will provide the same characteristics as an AI-targeted platform. The relevant question is whether the particular Ethernet implementation, its endpoints, and its topology suit the workload and operating requirements.

How InfiniBand fits into the fabric

InfiniBand is a distinct high-performance fabric technology with RDMA capability. NVIDIA describes it as low-latency and suitable for high-performance inter-node networking. That is a vendor characterization; the available material does not establish a neutral, controlled comparison proving that InfiniBand is always faster than Ethernet across workloads.

NVIDIA’s DGX B300 reference architecture identifies XDR InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet as compute-interconnect options in a large-scale system. The fact that both appear in the same reference material is a reminder that a real architecture may use different networking technologies for different functions. It does not establish that every system needs both, or that their roles are identical.

InfiniBand’s RDMA support and Ethernet’s ability to use RoCE give both technologies a route to RDMA-based communication. That shared capability does not make them the same fabric: the technology, platform, deployment, and operational characteristics remain distinct.

Ethernet, InfiniBand, and optics compared

Option What it is What to evaluate Important limit
Ethernet A family of networking technologies used to build data-center fabrics; AI designs may use RoCE. Whether the chosen platform, endpoint adapters, topology, and operations meet the cluster’s communication needs. Ordinary Ethernet does not automatically behave like an AI-optimized fabric.
InfiniBand A distinct high-performance fabric technology with RDMA capability. Whether its performance and operating characteristics fit the workload, scale, topology, and organization. No universal speed or suitability winner is established by the available vendor material.
Optical connection A physical link method using optical transceivers and fiber, or an active optical cable. Reach, fiber type, connector, module compatibility, port power, and cable-management needs. Fiber alone does not determine performance or compatibility; the exact configuration matters.

The first two rows compare fabrics. The third describes how a connection may be physically implemented. It is therefore possible to discuss Ethernet over an optical link or InfiniBand over an optical link without treating “optical” as a third fabric protocol.

How optical links work

An optical transceiver converts electrical signals at network equipment into optical signals carried through fiber, and converts received optical signals back to electrical ones. There are two broad arrangements described in NVIDIA’s cabling guidance:

  • Pluggable transceivers and fiber: separate optical modules plug into equipment ports, with a fiber cable connecting the modules. The separate modules add physical interfaces to manage.
  • Active optical cable: optical components are integrated at both ends of the cable, rather than supplied as separate pluggable modules.

Optical fiber can offer longer reach and a smaller cable diameter than passive copper. The trade-offs identified in NVIDIA’s guidance include higher cost, the need for power at the optical ports, and the added physical interfaces in a separate-transceiver design. These considerations affect both initial layout and ongoing handling and maintenance.

Why there is no single “fiber distance”

Reach is specific to the transceiver, fiber, connector, and link configuration. NVIDIA’s cabling guide gives HDR InfiniBand examples of up to 100 m for a short-range module and up to 2 km for a single-mode example. Those figures apply to the named module examples; they should not be generalized to other generations, Ethernet optics, or arbitrary fiber runs.

A separate structured-cabling guide sets maximum-reach assumptions for particular 400/800G Ethernet and InfiniBand XDR/NDR configurations, including assumptions about patch panels and connectors. A figure from one of those configurations is meaningful only with its associated equipment and cabling assumptions. For an actual build, confirm the exact module, fiber type, connectors, and switch and NIC compatibility rather than selecting a cable from a headline distance alone.

How to choose a fabric and link design

There is no evidence here for a universal winner between Ethernet and InfiniBand. A sound choice starts with the cluster’s requirements and the organization that will operate it, then treats the optical-link decision as a separate but connected design task.

  1. Describe the workload’s communication pattern. Identify how the distributed AI workload moves data among GPUs and servers, and what the fabric must support. The requirements should drive the comparison, rather than a technology label on its own.
  2. Set the required fabric performance and scale. Evaluate the needed performance and the intended system size and topology. Do not infer the result from a single advertised speed or a vendor’s general characterization.
  3. Compare complete platform designs. For Ethernet, assess the specific AI-oriented platform and its use of RoCE, where applicable. For InfiniBand, assess the particular fabric and its RDMA capabilities. Include endpoints and switches in the design comparison.
  4. Account for operations and interoperability. Consider whether the organization can deploy, monitor, maintain, and integrate the selected design with the rest of its infrastructure. A fabric’s technical attributes are only part of its suitability.
  5. Design physical links for each route. Determine required reach, whether multimode or single-mode fiber is appropriate for the selected configuration, connector type, module compatibility, power, and cable-management approach.
  6. Verify the exact bill of materials and assumptions. Check the equipment vendor’s compatibility and reach guidance for the specific switches, NICs, modules, fiber, and connectors. Include patch panels and other link components when the reach guidance assumes them.

This process avoids a common category error: choosing a fabric based on a cable’s distance, or choosing a cable based on a fabric’s name. The fabric must fit the workload and operating model; the physical link must fit the ports, distance, and cabling plan.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Fiber is a rival to Ethernet or InfiniBand.” Fiber is a physical medium; Ethernet and InfiniBand are fabric technologies.
  • “Ethernet is automatically suitable for AI because it supports high link rates.” The Ethernet platform and configuration matter. RoCE and AI-oriented designs are specific choices, not properties of every Ethernet network.
  • “InfiniBand is always faster.” The available material is vendor documentation, not a neutral comparison across workloads. Suitability depends on the deployment.
  • “An optical cable’s distance rating applies to all links.” Reach examples are module- and configuration-specific. Fiber type, connectors, patch panels, and equipment can be part of the assumptions.
  • “NVLink is another data-center fabric option.” The cited DGX B300 architecture places NVLink at a different layer from its Ethernet and InfiniBand fabric options.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

NVIDIA’s reference architecture and product documentation describe both AI-oriented Ethernet and InfiniBand options, as well as optical-cabling trade-offs and configuration-specific reach examples. These materials are useful for understanding the technologies and the stated product designs, but performance language should be understood as vendor description. They do not supply a controlled, independent benchmark that determines which fabric wins for every workload.

Accordingly, compare the intended workload, scale, topology, operating requirements, and complete physical-link design. Confirm generation-specific capabilities and compatibility against the documentation for the exact equipment being deployed; do not generalize a product figure or cable example to a different configuration.
