How AI Data-Center Demand Affects Bitcoin and Interest Rates

AI data centers can put pressure on electricity markets, with possible knock-on effects for inflation and interest rates. Bitcoin’s connection is mainly through mining’s power use—not a proven effect on its market price.

AI data centers can affect electricity markets, and higher power costs may feed into inflation. That creates a possible, indirect path to interest rates—but it does not mean data-center growth automatically causes a Federal Reserve rate change. Bitcoin enters the picture mainly because mining uses large amounts of electricity; the available evidence does not show that AI power demand directly moves Bitcoin’s market price.

What is the connection between AI data centers, Bitcoin and interest rates?

The connection runs through electricity, but it is not a single, proven chain of cause and effect. More AI computing can increase data-center electricity use. If that demand outpaces available generation and grid capacity, wholesale power prices may rise in some regions. Higher electricity costs can reach household and business bills and contribute to measured inflation. The Federal Reserve may take persistent inflation pressure into account when setting interest rates, alongside many other economic conditions.

Bitcoin mining is another major electricity user. When power is expensive, some mines can reduce or pause operations, changing their electricity demand. That creates a potential interaction between miners and local power markets. It does not establish that AI data centers cause Bitcoin’s price to rise or fall: the evidence discussed here concerns electricity demand, power prices and mining operations, not a demonstrated effect on Bitcoin’s market price.

It helps to keep five different measures separate: data-center electricity use, wholesale electricity prices, retail bills, inflation and interest rates. Bitcoin’s market price and the operating economics of mining are separate measures too. Each link between them has conditions and uncertainties.

How much electricity do data centers use, and how fast could demand grow?

The scale is significant, but forecasts differ because they use different assumptions and time horizons. The U.S. Department of Energy reported that U.S. data centers used 176 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2023, about 4.4% of total U.S. electricity use. In its 2024 report, DOE projected data-center use of 325–580 TWh in 2028, equal to 6.7–12% of U.S. consumption.

A 2025 update from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory put data centers at 11.8% of U.S. electricity use by 2030, with a scenario range of 9.5–15.3%. That estimate has a later horizon and different assumptions from DOE’s 2024 projection. It should not be treated as a direct revision of the 2028 figures or as a single certain outcome. Actual demand depends on how much capacity is built and used, as well as changes in efficiency and electricity supply.

Broader U.S. demand context also matters. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City reported average annual electricity-demand growth of 1.3% in 2021–23, with commercial users accounting for 60% of total demand growth during that period. Those figures describe electricity demand overall; they are not a measure of AI or data centers alone.

How do AI data centers affect electricity prices?

Electricity prices respond to both the amount of demand and the system’s ability to serve it. If load rises when available generation and transmission are constrained, the market may need to rely on more expensive generators. Congestion and local grid conditions can make the price effect much larger in one region than another. The pace of new generation, transmission and grid upgrades matters as much as the headline amount of planned data-center construction.

Two 2026 analyses illustrate why regional and scenario details matter. A March 2026 Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas working paper by Owen Kay, Robert Reaser and Reid Taylor estimated that existing data centers had raised average nationwide wholesale electricity prices by 3–5%. In its modeled 2028 scenarios, prices were 20% higher under a more moderate buildout and 50% higher under high utilization. These are model findings, not observed future outcomes.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s February 2026 demand scenario examined a different horizon and regional outcome. Relative to its February 2026 forecast, that high-demand scenario produced a 2027 ERCOT wholesale price $37 per megawatt-hour (MWh) higher, a 79% increase. For PJM, the estimated difference was $2.60/MWh, or 4%.

Analysis Geography and horizon Reported price result How to read it
Dallas Fed working paper, March 2026 Nationwide average; existing data centers Estimated 3–5% increase in average wholesale prices Model estimate attributed to existing data centers, not a universal bill increase.
Dallas Fed working paper, March 2026 Nationwide; modeled 2028 scenarios 20% increase under more moderate buildout; 50% under high utilization Scenario results that depend on buildout and utilization assumptions.
EIA analysis, February 2026 ERCOT; 2027 high-demand scenario relative to EIA’s February 2026 forecast $37/MWh higher, or 79% A regional modeled result; ERCOT conditions should not be generalized to every grid.
EIA analysis, February 2026 PJM; 2027 high-demand scenario relative to EIA’s February 2026 forecast $2.60/MWh higher, or 4% A different regional result under the same EIA scenario comparison.

The Dallas Fed’s nationwide 2028 model and EIA’s 2027 regional scenario are not competing forecasts of the same thing. They cover different periods, geographies, models and demand assumptions. In particular, the sharper ERCOT result is not evidence that every U.S. market will experience the same increase. ERCOT’s limited ties to neighboring grids can make local price responses more acute when supply is tight.

Could higher power costs raise inflation?

They could, but the size and persistence of any effect depend on how costs move through the electricity system. Wholesale-market costs can affect retail prices, while investments in new generation and grid expansion may add longer-term costs. How those costs are allocated—and how electricity rates are designed—helps determine which customers pay and when.

A March 2026 Dallas Fed analysis estimated that plausible data-center buildout could add 0.04–0.13 percentage points to annual personal consumption expenditures (PCE) inflation in 2030. The analysis said slower renewable growth could nearly double the modeled effect. This is a scenario estimate, not an observed inflation outcome or a Federal Reserve forecast. It describes one possible contribution to inflation, not the total inflation rate.

The distinction matters because a power-price increase is not automatically a lasting inflation shock of the same size. Its effect depends on whether costs reach retail bills, how long they persist, and what happens to other prices and economic conditions. The estimates do not establish that data centers will push inflation higher by a fixed amount in every year or region.

Will AI data centers raise interest rates?

Not by themselves. The Federal Reserve sets policy in light of the overall economic outlook and its mandate, not by mechanically responding to one industry’s electricity use. If energy costs contribute to persistent inflation or affect inflation expectations, they could become one consideration in rate decisions. If the pressure is limited, temporary or outweighed by other economic developments, the implications could be different.

In a May 27, 2026 speech, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook said announced data-center plans exceeded $1.5 trillion, while only a small portion had been realized at that time. She also noted that electricity and water prices had each increased about 5% over the prior year, as of the speech. Cook described the possibility of an additional price shock from AI-related investment demand. Her remarks support treating AI investment and infrastructure as a possible source of price pressure; they do not establish that a particular rate decision was caused by data centers.

For readers following rates, the practical question is not simply whether data-center construction is growing. It is whether power-related costs are large and persistent enough to affect inflation and the broader outlook, and how policymakers weigh those developments against other evidence. The figures above are estimates and scenarios, not a rate forecast.

Does AI power demand affect Bitcoin?

The evidence establishes an electricity-market connection, not a direct link to Bitcoin’s market price. Bitcoin mining consumes substantial electricity, so local power prices and the availability of power can affect whether a mining operation runs at full capacity. AI data-center demand could influence power-market conditions in places where both types of load compete for constrained supply. The size of that effect depends on the local grid and on how much demand and supply change.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index estimates for global Bitcoin-mining electricity use in 2023 ranging from 67 to 240 TWh, with a point estimate of 120 TWh. The broad range is important: EIA said the index is updated daily and has wide theoretical bounds. Estimated mining demand changes with market conditions and equipment availability, so the point estimate is not a fixed current load or a precise measurement of every mine’s consumption.

Mining electricity use is also not the same thing as the amount of power a mine must consume at all times. Some operators can respond to price signals by curtailing. That flexibility may reduce their demand during tight periods, though it does not mean all mining operations can or will respond in the same way.

Why can Bitcoin miners shut down when electricity prices spike?

Mining operations use electricity to run computing equipment. When the price of power rises enough, reducing consumption can be preferable to continuing at full load, depending on the operator’s costs and arrangements. The available examples show that some large mining loads can respond quickly; they do not establish that every mine has the same flexibility, incentive or access to a demand-response program.

The EIA described Texas Bitcoin miners participating in ERCOT’s large-flexible-load program. A later Federal Energy Regulatory Commission report documented one facility whose load fell from above 200 megawatts (MW) to nearly zero during certain periods when day-ahead prices exceeded $100/MWh. The report describes a particular facility and periods in late summer 2025; it should not be read as a typical response for the whole mining industry.

When a mine curtails, it stops or reduces some electricity use, potentially easing demand on the grid during a high-price period. That operational response is distinct from the market price of Bitcoin. These examples do not show that miners’ curtailment changes Bitcoin’s price, nor do they show that AI workloads can be curtailed in the same way.

What determines how large the effect will be?

Any estimate should be read with its region, timeframe, assumptions and measured outcome attached. A forecast for wholesale prices is not a forecast for household bills; an inflation scenario is not a policy-rate prediction; a mining electricity estimate is not a Bitcoin-price analysis. Before comparing two headline figures, check whether they actually measure the same thing.

  • Grid geography: Regional supply, transmission constraints and grid connections shape how additional demand affects prices. The ERCOT and PJM results in EIA’s 2026 scenario show very different modeled price changes.
  • Construction and utilization: The quantity of data-center capacity that is built and how intensively it is used affect electricity demand. The Dallas Fed’s moderate-buildout and high-utilization scenarios produce different modeled outcomes.
  • Generation and transmission: New generation, transmission capacity and grid upgrades can change how much additional load pressures prices. The inflation analysis also finds a larger modeled effect under slower renewable growth.
  • Cost allocation and rate design: Wholesale price changes and infrastructure investment reach customers through different arrangements. The effect on retail bills depends partly on how those costs are recovered.
  • Time horizon and metric: DOE’s 2028 projection, LBNL’s 2030 estimate and the price and inflation scenarios measure different periods and outcomes. A TWh estimate, a percentage price change and a percentage-point inflation estimate cannot be substituted for one another.

The most defensible conclusion is conditional: rapid data-center growth can add electricity demand; tight regional supply can make that demand more expensive; and persistent higher energy costs can contribute to inflation. Whether those developments influence rates depends on their scale and duration within the wider economy. Bitcoin mining is part of the electricity-demand picture, but the evidence does not demonstrate that AI data-center demand determines Bitcoin’s market price.
