AI is starting to change food delivery at several points: how people find restaurants and build orders, how merchants manage listings, and how platforms route deliveries. DoorDash describes AI tools for all three; Uber has a conversational ordering handoff and robot delivery in select cities. These features and pilots show a delivery system in transition—not that AI or robots have broadly replaced human couriers.
Where AI is entering food delivery
AI’s role is not limited to carrying a meal from restaurant to customer. It can shape the order before it exists, support the restaurant’s digital storefront, and help the delivery platform decide how to move it. The distinction matters: a conversational assistant, a catalog tool and a robot each handle different parts of the transaction.

How AI could change restaurant discovery and ordering
Recommendations and basket-building
DoorDash’s Q2 2026 results describe Ask, an AI assistant for discovering restaurants and building grocery baskets, alongside work on personalization and reducing friction when customers assemble a basket. This moves part of the choice process from browsing a conventional list toward asking for help or receiving tailored suggestions. It does not remove the platform’s role in presenting options, taking the order or coordinating fulfillment.
Ordering through Claude still hands off to Uber Eats
Uber’s US Claude integration launched on April 23, 2026, according to Uber’s help page. A customer can select a restaurant or menu item in Claude, then finish the cart and checkout in the Uber Eats app. That is a conversational discovery and selection flow, not a complete transaction carried out independently by Claude.

AI search may become another storefront
A DoorDash and SevenRooms report based on March 2026 Dynata surveys found that 22% of 3,001 surveyed US consumers had used AI to choose a restaurant. The same report said 39% of 509 surveyed US restaurant operators had optimized their listings to appear in AI results. These are survey findings published by companies with an interest in restaurant discovery, not a universal measure of consumer behavior.
The report also says third-party platforms were cited as a source in 41.6% of restaurant-related AI queries. Its page does not expose the underlying query sample and methodology, so treat that figure as the report’s claim rather than an independently audited benchmark. The report and its survey details are available from DoorDash and SevenRooms’ 2026 restaurant trends page.

What AI may do for restaurants
Merchant-facing systems can address work that happens before a customer places an order. DoorDash says its AI development includes merchant onboarding, automated catalog ingestion and ad monetization. Catalog ingestion can help bring a restaurant’s menu or product information into a platform; onboarding tools can support setup. The company materials describe these functions, but do not establish independent, measured productivity or revenue gains.

For operators, the practical consequence is that digital menu quality and discoverability may matter across more than one interface: a marketplace listing, a platform assistant and external AI search. The 2026 survey figures indicate that some surveyed operators are already adapting listings, but they do not show which tactics work best or how much additional business they generate.

How AI could influence routing and delivery modes
Routing for human couriers
DoorDash says its platform uses AI for Dasher routing, traffic prediction and safety. These are dispatch and navigation functions: they can inform how an order is assigned or how a courier gets to a destination. The company’s description is not evidence that all courier decisions are automated or that the systems have eliminated the need for human delivery workers.
A mixed fleet rather than one replacement vehicle
DoorDash describes an Autonomous Delivery Platform intended to match an order with a suitable option: a Dasher, robot, drone or Dot vehicle. It is best understood as a software orchestration strategy for a mixed network. The cited announcement does not establish that each mode is available everywhere or routinely handles orders at scale.

Order characteristics and operating conditions matter. In its July 2026 DoorDash Air announcement, DoorDash said more than 20% of orders on its platform in 2025 traveled three to five miles, and those deliveries took nearly 25% longer on average than shorter deliveries. That is company platform data, not an industrywide result. DoorDash also estimated that about 80% of typical restaurant orders on its platform are light and small enough for its aircraft to carry safely; that estimate relates to its order mix and initial tests, not to drone suitability generally. See the company’s DoorDash Air announcement and Dash Forward 2025 announcement.

Drones: certification and pilots are not broad availability
DoorDash announced FAA Part 135 certification in July 2026 and described integrated drone-delivery plans. Its September 2026 announcement also described a Northern California pilot. Certification and a pilot are meaningful steps toward operations, but they do not mean customers can order drone delivery across the country. The company’s descriptions are available in its DoorDash Air announcement and Dash Forward announcement.
How restaurant staff handle a robot order
Uber’s October 21, 2025 explainer says robot delivery operates in select cities. When a robot arrives, restaurant staff receive an alert on the Uber Eats Orders tablet and place the prepared bag in its insulated compartment; Uber says food preparation otherwise remains the same. Availability and the operational workflow can vary by market. Details are in Uber’s robot-delivery explainer.
Will AI replace food delivery drivers?
The available examples do not support that conclusion. DoorDash describes AI-assisted routing and a system designed to coordinate multiple delivery modes; Uber says its robots work alongside couriers in select cities. The clearer near-term picture is software supporting discovery and dispatch, with autonomous vehicles serving limited or developing roles alongside human couriers. The cited company announcements establish features, plans and limited deployments—not their economy-wide effect on jobs or the share of meals delivered autonomously.
