How AI Coding Assistants Have Changed Software Development

AI coding assistants now sit inside everyday development work. Here is what controlled studies show about speed and quality, why results vary by team, and how to keep generated code reviewed.

AI coding assistants have moved from novelty to a routine part of many developers’ editors, and they have changed how code gets drafted, reviewed, and tested. The measurable effects are real but narrower than the headlines suggest. In a controlled experiment, developers using GitHub Copilot finished a bounded programming task faster than a control group. Broader studies show that the benefit depends on the team, its practices, and the kind of work being done. Generated code still needs the same human review as any other code.

What changed in the everyday workflow

The most visible change is where help now appears. Earlier tooling mostly meant autocomplete for identifiers and syntax. Current assistants offer whole-line and multi-line suggestions while a developer types, answer questions about unfamiliar code in a chat panel, and draft tests, documentation, or refactors on request. GitHub’s 2024 survey summary describes AI coding tools as generative-AI and large language model tools that provide engineering assistance throughout the software development cycle, not only at the moment of typing (GitHub, 2024 survey summary).

That shift changes the shape of a working day in three practical ways:

  • Drafting moves earlier. A developer can ask for a first version of a function, a parser, or a configuration file and then edit it, rather than building every line from a blank file.
  • Reading moves toward asking. Explaining an unfamiliar module or error message can happen inside the editor, which shortens the search through documentation and old pull requests for simple questions.
  • Checking becomes the main job. Because producing code is cheaper, evaluating it, running it, and deciding whether it fits the codebase takes a larger share of the effort.

How much faster are developers?

The most-cited figure comes from Microsoft Research’s February 2023 summary of a controlled experiment. Developers were asked to implement a JavaScript HTTP server as quickly as possible. The group with access to the AI pair programmer, GitHub Copilot, completed the task 55.8% faster than the control group.

That number is accurate for what was measured, and it is also limited. It describes one well-defined programming task, with recruited participants working under experimental conditions, measured against a control group that did not have the tool. It does not show that developers are 55.8% more productive across their jobs. A job also includes requirements gathering, design discussion, debugging production incidents, code review, and coordination with other people, and a task like writing a standard HTTP server does not capture most of that work.

Why one task cannot stand in for a whole job

Tasks with familiar patterns, clear specifications, and well-known libraries are the easiest for an assistant to accelerate. Tasks that depend on private system knowledge, unusual constraints, or unclear goals often gain less, and in some cases the time spent checking a plausible but wrong suggestion can cancel out the gain. A team that wants a useful estimate should measure its own common work: the time to close a ticket, the number of review rounds, the rate of defects found after release.

Why the results vary between teams

Google’s DORA 2025 report summary, based on more than 100 hours of qualitative data and survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide, frames AI as an amplifier. In DORA’s wording, AI’s primary role in software development is that of an amplifier: it magnifies whatever an organization already does well or poorly (Google DORA, 2025 report summary).

In practice, this means an assistant does not fix a weak engineering process. A team with clear ownership, small changes, automated tests, and fast feedback can absorb generated code safely and turn saved time into faster delivery. A team with unclear requirements, slow pipelines, or thin test coverage may produce more code than it can review, and the extra volume becomes a new bottleneck. The tool is the same in both cases; the surrounding system determines what it amplifies.

Signals that an organization is ready to benefit

  • Changes are routinely small enough to review in one sitting.
  • Automated tests run on every change and failures are visible to the author.
  • Reviewers have time and agreed standards, so review is not skipped under pressure.
  • Teams track delivery outcomes, not only how much code was written.

Does AI-assisted code have better quality?

GitHub has published a summary of a controlled code-quality study reporting relative improvements on several quality dimensions in its experimental task. That is a useful result, but it should be read narrowly. It shows that, in that setting, measured quality attributes moved in the favorable direction. It does not establish that AI-generated code is always correct, secure, or ready for production, and it does not mean that a reviewer can relax. The summary is also vendor-published, so readers should weigh it as they would any product-maker’s study, and look for independent replication where it matters to their decisions.

Quality is also not one number. Correctness, security, maintainability, performance, and readability can move differently, and an assistant can improve one while introducing a subtle problem in another. The safest reading is that quality depends on how the code is checked after it is generated.

How developers are using these tools at work

GitHub’s 2024 survey summary reports adoption findings from its respondents. These are the views and reported use of the people who answered, not a count of all developers, so the figures describe that sample and should not be generalized to the whole profession. The survey’s value is in showing the range of tasks respondents attached to these tools, which spans drafting, explaining, testing, and documenting, rather than only writing new functions.

Use cases that tend to fit the evidence well share a common trait: the output is easy to check. Examples include boilerplate, unit tests for a function whose behavior is already specified, translating a small snippet between languages, and explaining a block of code that the developer can run. Use cases that fit poorly include security-sensitive logic, cryptography, concurrency, and code whose correct behavior is not written down anywhere.

Review is still the responsible default

Generated code should be treated like code from a new contributor whose work has not been verified. A practical workflow looks like this:

  1. Read the suggestion in full before accepting it, and confirm that it uses the APIs and versions your project actually depends on.
  2. Run the code and the existing test suite, then add tests for the behavior you care about.
  3. Check security-relevant paths, such as input handling, authentication, and secrets, by hand.
  4. Look for licensing or provenance concerns if the code will ship in a commercial product, and follow your organization’s policy.
  5. Judge the change in the same pull request review as any other change, and record what was checked.

This guidance follows from the bounded evidence above. It is editorial advice, not a guarantee that any particular review process will catch every defect.

Evidence type What it measures Example in this article What it does not show
Controlled task experiment Time to complete a defined task, compared with a control group Microsoft Research, February 2023: JavaScript HTTP server, 55.8% faster Overall productivity across a real job or team
Controlled code-quality study Relative change on several quality dimensions in a defined task GitHub’s published code-quality summary That generated code is always correct or secure
Large mixed-methods study Practices and conditions associated with outcomes, from qualitative data and survey responses Google DORA 2025 report summary, over 100 hours of qualitative data and nearly 5,000 respondents A fixed effect size for AI use alone
Adoption survey Reported use and views of respondents GitHub 2024 survey summary The share of all developers who use these tools

Evaluating an assistant for your team

Choosing among assistants is a separate decision from understanding their effects, and it depends on local conditions. Compare candidates on the following criteria, and check each vendor’s current documentation directly, because features, plans, and data-handling terms change often:

  • Task fit: which of your common tasks it helps with, tested on your own code.
  • Editor and workflow integration: whether it works in the editors and review tools your team already uses.
  • Repository context: how much of your codebase it can read, and whether that is configurable.
  • Human control: whether suggestions can be accepted in parts, rejected easily, and traced in version history.
  • Privacy and data handling: what code and prompts are sent, retained, or used for training under the plan you would buy.
  • Total cost: licence fees plus the review, testing, and training time the tool adds.

Run a short trial on real tickets with a clear before-and-after measurement before committing to a plan.
