AI chips are made using the same basic wafer-fabrication sequence as other integrated circuits: equipment adds thin films, patterns them with lithography, etches selected material, and measures the results. These steps repeat to build a chip’s many patterned layers. “AI chipmaking equipment” describes equipment used to manufacture chips intended to run AI workloads—not a separate, AI-only fabrication process.
How the wafer-fabrication loop builds a chip
A chip’s structures are formed layer by layer on a silicon wafer. In a typical patterning cycle, deposition creates or adds a film; lithography defines where a change should occur; and etching transfers that pattern into the exposed material. Inspection and metrology then measure patterns and look for defects. Their measurements can help process equipment correct later operations.

- Add a film: Deposition puts a thin layer of conductor, insulator, or semiconductor material on the wafer.
- Prepare a mask: The wafer is coated with photosensitive resist. Lithography exposes selected areas, and baking and development leave openings in the resist.
- Transfer the pattern: Etching removes selected material through the openings, forming a physical feature in the underlying film.
- Measure the result: Inspection checks for defects, while metrology measures characteristics such as pattern dimensions and alignment.
- Repeat for more layers: The sequence is used again as the device is built up. The particular materials, steps, and measurements vary with the structure being made.
The resist pattern is temporary: it defines where a process acts, but it is not itself the finished circuit. In practice, manufacturing uses many process operations, and not every wafer is checked in every way; sampling and tool choices depend on production needs.
Deposition: putting the right film on the wafer
Deposition equipment forms thin films that become part of a device or provide material for a later patterning step. The appropriate method depends on the film and the structure being built. No single deposition technique replaces the others.
#1 Best Overall
| Method | How it deposits material | Why the choice matters |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) | Chemical precursors react in a process chamber to form a film. | The resulting film and its suitability depend on the target material and structure. |
| Atomic layer deposition (ALD) | Reactants are introduced in sequence, building material cycle by cycle. | Its stepwise approach is useful for forming very thin films and addressing complex structures. |
| Physical vapor deposition (PVD) | In a vacuum, material is sputtered from a target and deposited on the wafer. | It uses a different deposition mechanism from chemical processes and suits different film requirements. |
| Electrochemical deposition | An electrochemical process deposits material such as copper. | It can be used to form copper wiring. |
Film properties and geometry guide the process choice. A method that works for one material or shape may not produce the required result for another.
Lithography: printing a temporary pattern
Photolithography transfers a reticle’s design into photosensitive resist. The reticle carries the pattern; illumination and projection optics focus an image of it onto resist-coated wafer regions. Exposure changes the resist chemically. After baking and development, selected resist is removed, leaving openings that expose the film below.

- Professional stereo microscope with boom stand has long working distance to enable users to perform work or manipulate large items, including circuit boards and dental appliances
- Trinocular viewing head with pair of 10x super-widefield eyepieces, adjustable interpupillary distance, fixed 45-degree vertical inclination to reduce eye and neck strain, and 360-degree rotation capability to enable sharing
- 0.7x-4.5x zoom objective provides continuous zoom magnification and longer focal length for inspecting large-scale specimens, and a 0.5x Barlow lens extends the working distance

Those openings define where a subsequent operation, such as etching, can act. Lithography therefore sets up the pattern, while the later material-processing step creates the physical structure. The two are related but not interchangeable.
ASML’s 2025 annual-report strategy page describes EUV lithography as using light with a 13.5-nanometer wavelength. That is a specific technical detail about EUV, not a description of every lithography system.

Etching: turning the mask into a structure
Etching selectively removes material exposed through the resist or another mask. Where deposition adds a film and lithography defines the pattern, etching transfers that pattern into the material itself. The appropriate etch depends on the target material, the desired selectivity, the feature geometry, and the intended result.
- Dry plasma etching is used for circuit-defining operations. Reactive-ion etching uses ions to activate material removal.
- Atomic-layer etching removes material in very small increments.
- Wet etching is used mainly for wafer cleaning, though wet processes also have etch applications.
These are different approaches, not a simple ranking. The process must remove the intended material while preserving other regions and producing the required shape.

Inspection and metrology: checking patterns and feeding back results
Metrology measures process results; inspection searches for defects. Both help determine whether a wafer’s patterns are being made as intended. Measurements can be used as feedback for lithography control, helping keep the process stable and improve yield.

| Optical diffraction measurement | Infers pattern properties from reflected or scattered light, often using repeating measurement targets. | Suited to fast measurement of repeating targets. |
| E-beam inspection | Scans with a focused electron beam and uses secondary electrons to form an image. | ASML describes it as slower than optical metrology and commonly used after pattern etch; its current explainer says some of its e-beam inspection systems offer 1-nanometer resolution. This is a vendor specification, not a universal figure for all inspection systems. |
Examples of monitored parameters include overlay—the alignment between layers—and focus. Measurement strategies vary: production does not necessarily inspect every wafer with every available method.
What “AI” means in this equipment context
The chip’s intended use and the equipment used to manufacture it are separate questions. An AI accelerator is fabricated through wafer processes such as deposition, lithography, etching, and measurement; the cited process descriptions do not establish a distinct fabrication sequence for AI chips.
ASML’s 2025 annual-report strategy page says AI is embedded in some of its products, particularly computational lithography and metrology or inspection, and is used to improve speed and accuracy in optical proximity correction products. This is a vendor statement about selected product areas. It does not mean every lithography, deposition, etch, or inspection tool is AI-powered.
