No AI-assisted vulnerability scanner can guarantee that it will find every bug. These tools can help identify suspicious code, exposed secrets, or risky behavior, and some use machine-learning or other AI features to filter, prioritize, or explain findings. But a scan sees only the code, dependencies, configuration, and application behavior available to it. It cannot reliably infer every security requirement or prove that an application is safe. Use scanning as one layer of verification, then validate important alerts and test the paths and rules that automation cannot understand.
What AI-assisted vulnerability scanning means
Vulnerability scanning is automated analysis intended to surface security weaknesses. “AI-assisted” describes a feature set, not one standardized method: a tool might combine conventional rules with a machine-learning model, use AI to rank findings, or suggest a code change. Another scanner may use no AI at all. The label alone does not tell you what is analyzed, how findings are generated, or whether a suggested fix is correct.

In its inventory of source-code security analyzers, NIST describes examples that include a machine-learning model used to filter hardcoded-credential findings and a separate platform offering AI-assisted prioritization and code-fix suggestions. These are examples of tool-specific capabilities, not proof that all scanners use those methods or that AI independently verifies a vulnerability. The inventory is not a controlled comparison or an endorsement. NIST’s source-code security analyzer inventory provides the examples and tool descriptions.
The useful question is not simply whether a scanner uses AI. Ask what inputs it examines, what classes of weakness it is designed to flag, how it handles uncertainty, and how you will check its results against your application’s actual behavior.

How a scan turns code or behavior into findings
Implementations differ, but a practical scanning pipeline usually has four stages. A scanner receives some combination of source code, compiled or intermediate code, dependency information, configuration, or access to a running application. It analyzes those inputs using rules, models, or both; reports candidate issues with supporting details and sometimes severity or priority; and may offer remediation guidance. An AI feature can assist at one or more stages, but its presence does not make the output a security verdict.
1. The tool examines a defined scope
For source analysis, the input might be a repository or selected files. Depending on the tool, related context such as framework configuration, dependency manifests, or build output can affect what it is able to inspect. A dynamic scanner instead sends requests to a running application and observes the responses it receives. If the relevant service, route, role, or configuration is outside the scan’s scope, the tool cannot draw conclusions about it.
2. Rules and models identify candidates
Traditional static analysis can look for known risky patterns and trace data through code. A model may help classify an alert, reduce noise, or identify a pattern that is difficult to express as a simple rule. The exact methods and their intended uses vary by analyzer. Treat a finding as a candidate that needs context, not as proof that an attacker can exploit the code.

3. Findings are ranked or explained
Some tools assign severity, confidence, or a priority score. Those labels can help organize a queue, but they do not automatically account for every factor that determines risk in your environment: whether the code is reachable, what data it handles, what controls surround it, and what an attacker could accomplish. AI-generated explanations and fixes are likewise proposals to inspect and test, not validated outcomes.
4. A person or follow-up test verifies what matters
For a significant alert, inspect the relevant code or reproduce the behavior in a safe test environment. Check whether untrusted input can reach the reported operation, whether protective checks run first, and whether the demonstrated behavior violates a real security requirement. This step turns a tool’s output into a decision about remediation, risk acceptance, or further investigation.
Static analysis and dynamic testing see different things
Static analysis examines source code or another code representation without needing to execute the application. It can identify suspicious code patterns or data flows even when a particular path is not exercised during a test run. Dynamic application testing interacts with a running system and observes what happens for the requests and conditions it actually reaches. The two approaches have different visibility; neither alone covers every execution path or design assumption.

| Approach | What it examines | What it can reveal | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static analysis (SAST) | Source code or another code representation | Risky patterns and possible flows through code, without requiring execution | May lack runtime or business context; a reported pattern still needs interpretation |
| Dynamic application testing (DAST) | A running application reached through configured tests and requests | Observed behavior, such as how an application responds to particular inputs | Only tests behavior reached by its inputs, configuration, and access |
| Dependency analysis | Included libraries or other third-party components, often identified from project metadata | Potentially vulnerable included components, depending on the analyzer and its data | Does not by itself establish whether the application’s use of a component is exploitable |
These categories describe different analysis targets, not mutually exclusive product labels; a tool may combine more than one. NIST recommends combining code-focused and black-box methods and identifies techniques such as static scanning, web application scanning where applicable, fuzzing, and checks of included code as complementary verification methods. See NIST IR 8397.

Why a scanner can miss vulnerabilities or raise misleading alerts
Complex code and different bug classes challenge different tools
Detection is not uniform across programming tasks. NIST’s SATE VI evaluation found significant variation by test case, bug class, and complexity; tools found lower-complexity bugs more readily. That is a finding from a particular evaluation, not a general production detection rate for every tool or codebase. It is a reason to test tools against representative code rather than assume one benchmark predicts your results. NIST’s SATE VI report summary also advises prospective users to try a tool or tool set on their own code before production use.
Dynamic scans do not exercise every possible path
A dynamic test can only observe behavior produced by the requests, identities, data, and configuration it uses. A route that the scanner never reaches, a flaw that requires a particular sequence of actions, or a problem that appears only under an unusual state may remain unseen. Broader inputs and complementary testing—such as fuzzing, structural tests, and regression cases for previously discovered issues—can explore behavior in different ways. NIST IR 8397 describes such techniques as additions to verification, not substitutes for one another.

Tools may not know what the application is supposed to allow
A scanner can reason about patterns and observed responses, but it may not know the intended business rule. For example, whether one user should be allowed to view or change another user’s record depends on the application’s authorization policy. A technically valid response can still represent an authorization bypass; a workflow may be exploitable because of how several individually ordinary actions fit together. OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide says automation can efficiently find common, known vulnerabilities, while business-logic flaws, authorization bypasses, and context-specific risks still require skilled human analysis and code review. See the OWASP Web Security Testing Guide introduction.
False positives and false negatives are both possible
A false positive is an alert that does not represent an exploitable vulnerability in the application’s actual context. A false negative is a real weakness that the scan does not report. A long alert list does not prove that the application is unusually unsafe, and an empty one does not prove that it is secure. NIST’s application-scanning guidance discusses calibration and meaningful interpretation, and notes the value of additional testing for weaknesses automated scanners miss. That guidance is foundational rather than a description of current product capabilities. See NIST SP 800-115.

Results depend on the evaluation cases and setup. NIST’s SATE IV discussion cautions that synthetic cases may not reflect production software and that its results should not be used to decide which tool is best for a particular application. NIST’s SATE IV page is useful for understanding that limit. A benchmark can inform evaluation, but it cannot replace checking how a candidate performs on your languages, frameworks, and representative code.
Best Value
A layered workflow for using scanners responsibly
Build a verification process around the application’s risks and architecture rather than treating one scan as a release gate that proves security. NIST IR 8397 describes multiple verification techniques; select complementary checks that match the code and interfaces you need to protect.
- Define the scope. List the repositories and services in scope, the languages and frameworks they use, included components, exposed interfaces, sensitive data, and security goals. Identify important roles and operations, such as who can read or modify each class of record. This gives reviewers and scanners a concrete target instead of an undefined “scan everything.”
- Run static analysis against the code. Use a code scanner to look for source-level patterns and potential data flows. Confirm that the tool supports the languages and frameworks in the repository and that the intended code was actually analyzed. Review the reported location and explanation rather than treating a severity label as conclusive.
- Test running interfaces where applicable. If the software exposes a web interface or other network-accessible service, use dynamic tests against an appropriate test environment. Check which routes, user roles, and application states were included; a scan against a single unauthenticated landing page does not represent every protected workflow.
- Cover other verification needs. Add dependency checks for included components, secret checks where relevant, threat modeling, fuzzing, black-box and structural tests, and regression tests for previously fixed issues. These techniques answer different questions: for example, a dependency check concerns included code, while a regression case checks that a known behavior does not return.
- Triage and validate significant findings. Reproduce important alerts where safe, inspect data flow and reachability, and establish the possible impact in the application’s context. Calibrate scanning and investigate recurring noise; do not automatically dismiss repeated alerts without checking whether their underlying conditions changed. Fix confirmed issues, then use an appropriate test to verify the correction.
- Manually review design-sensitive paths. Examine authorization boundaries, business rules, and multi-step workflows with people who understand the intended behavior. Use focused code review and targeted tests for questions that cannot be answered from a code pattern or a limited set of requests alone.
- Evaluate tools on your own representative code. Before relying on a candidate in production, try it on code and cases resembling your environment. NIST’s SATE VI summary specifically recommends testing tools on one’s own code base. Record what it analyzes, useful findings, missed test cases, false alerts, integration effort, and whether explanations or suggested fixes help reviewers.
How to evaluate an AI-assisted scanner
Compare tools against the needs of the team and application, not just the word “AI” or a single benchmark score. Use a representative sample and agree in advance on what counts as useful output. Useful comparison dimensions include:
- Coverage: supported languages, frameworks, build systems, application interfaces, and dependency formats that match the actual project.
- Analysis modes: whether it offers static, dynamic, dependency-focused, or combined analysis, and what inputs each mode requires.
- Finding quality: whether alerts include locations, evidence, confidence, or steps that make validation practical, and how the tool handles likely false alerts.
- AI feature boundaries: what the model is used for—such as filtering, prioritization, explanation, or suggestions—and what remains for a person to verify.
- Development fit: whether results can be reviewed in the team’s workflow, how quickly findings arrive, and whether repeated scans support useful regression checks.
- Data and deployment constraints: what code or findings must be shared with an external service, where analysis runs, and whether those conditions meet the organization’s requirements.
- Observed performance on representative cases: which known issues or test cases it detects, what it misses, and the review effort its output creates.
There is no universal detection percentage established by the cited official material for AI-assisted scanners as a category. NIST SATE VI reports variability in a bounded evaluation, and SATE IV cautions against transferring benchmark results directly to a particular application. Use external evaluations as context, then make tool selection a local engineering decision.

What a clean scan does—and does not—tell you
A clean scan means only that the configured tool did not report a finding within the inputs and conditions it examined. It does not show that every line, dependency, route, identity, or business rule was covered, nor that untested behavior is safe. Conversely, a finding is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of exploitability. The strongest use of AI-assisted scanning is as a repeatable source of leads inside a broader verification process: automated analysis can find patterns efficiently, while testing and human review establish what those patterns mean in the application.
