They should not be treated as unsupervised accountants: define what each agent may access or change, which actions need approval, and how its work will be tested and audited. The right design depends on your ERP, close process, and control requirements.
What an AI agent can do during the close
In a month-end close, an AI agent is software configured to carry out or assist with steps in a finance workflow. Depending on the product and configuration, it may observe information in connected systems, apply matching or analysis rules, flag work that needs attention, and prepare material for a person to review. It may also coordinate tasks or report their status.

The useful distinction is between assistance and authority. Finding a mismatch, explaining a variance, or assembling a draft does not by itself authorize the agent to approve an accounting treatment or post a journal. Whether software can take an action depends on the permissions and controls set for that workflow, not on the label “agent.”
Some descriptions frame this as continuous, exception-oriented work: instead of waiting for a period-end sprint, agents monitor activity, flag accounting exceptions, and prepare draft entries. That is KPMG’s description of its approach, not a guarantee that every close agent works this way or that a close will be faster. The available product descriptions do not establish independent, organization-wide evidence of improved close speed or accuracy. KPMG’s explanation of its agentic close approach

Where agents can fit in the close workflow
A close is a sequence of connected tasks, and automation can be applied at more than one point. The specific coverage varies by product; treat the examples below as capabilities described by their providers rather than as independent validation.
1. Monitor tasks and transactions
An agent or associated workflow tool can make task progress visible, track activity, and notify staff when work is due or needs attention. Sage describes task tracking, notifications, and real-time close progress visibility in its Intacct close automation offering. A useful implementation makes the status actionable: an owner should be able to see what is blocked, why, and what must happen next. Sage Intacct Close Automation
2. Match transactions and reconcile accounts
Matching compares records that should correspond, such as transactions from different sources. An agent may identify likely matches and leave unmatched or ambiguous items for investigation. KPMG describes transaction matching; SAP describes transactional-level matching and reconciliation; Sage describes reconciliation reports and guided investigation. These descriptions do not mean every account or data source is supported, or that a proposed match is necessarily correct. Confirm the product’s coverage for your systems, data, and reconciliation rules. KPMG, SAP Financial Management, Sage Intacct
3. Surface variances and exceptions
Analysis tools can bring unusual values or changes to a reviewer’s attention. Sage describes automated variance analysis, while KPMG describes escalating exceptions and variances. A flag is a prompt to investigate, not a finding that an error occurred: expected changes can be unusual, and a plausible-looking number can still be wrong. Finance teams need documented thresholds and a clear route for resolving exceptions. Sage, KPMG

4. Prepare drafts for review
Where a process permits it, an agent can assemble a draft entry, analysis, or supporting work from available information. KPMG describes draft-entry preparation. SAP lists analysis and journal posting among tasks for which an organization can control the Financial Closing Assistant’s autonomy. A prepared draft still needs an authorized reviewer to verify the inputs, accounting basis, amount, period, and supporting evidence before it is approved or posted. KPMG, SAP
5. Route decisions and retain evidence
Policy exceptions, ambiguous records, and significant accounting judgments should reach an accountable finance professional rather than being silently resolved by automation. The workflow should preserve what the agent accessed, proposed, and did, along with the evidence and human decisions needed to reconstruct the work. KPMG’s 2026 board oversight paper calls for AI actions to be recorded, traceable, explainable, and available for review, with documented testing and clear accountability. KPMG’s 2026 paper on agentic AI and board oversight
What humans should still approve
Human review is not a single final checkpoint. It belongs wherever a workflow crosses a policy boundary, creates a material accounting consequence, or presents uncertainty that the agent is not authorized to resolve. KPMG describes an exception-first model in which routine work can be automated while policy exceptions, variance anomalies, and complex judgments go to a designated professional. The same article says its approach uses human validation, thresholds, and segregation of duties. KPMG’s account of the human role in an agentic close

- Exceptions: Require a reviewer when data is missing, a match is ambiguous, or a result falls outside the workflow’s defined thresholds.
- Accounting judgments: Keep decisions that require interpretation of policy or a complex judgment with an accountable finance professional.
- Approval and posting: Decide explicitly which roles may approve or post, and prevent an agent from bypassing the organization’s approval rules.
- Control ownership: Assign a person responsible for the workflow, its configuration, its testing, and resolving control failures.
Vendor descriptions illustrate why autonomy should be assessed product by product. Sage says its Close agent does not post entries or make changes without approval. SAP says organizations can control the Financial Closing Assistant’s autonomy, including for journal posting, clearing, and analysis. Neither statement establishes a universal default for other products or for every customer configuration. Sage, SAP

How AI agents can fit around an ERP
Close automation can sit within or alongside an organization’s finance systems. The three patterns below are examples from provider descriptions, not a neutral head-to-head product assessment. Compare them against the actual ERP and connected sources that your close depends on.
| Approach | Example described by the provider | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| ERP-associated assistant | SAP Financial Closing Assistant and Sage Intacct Close Automation describe capabilities associated with their financial management products. | Does it fit your existing ERP and supported tasks? What data can it access? Can you configure autonomy and approvals? What evidence is retained? What are the deployment and licensing terms? |
| Orchestration over existing systems | KPMG describes a close command center layered over existing ERPs and says its approach includes more than 200 pre-built cloud connectors. | Which connectors cover your systems? What permissions do they need? Which system remains the system of record? How are exceptions routed, actions logged, and controls owned? What implementation effort is required? |
| Specialist finance workflow software | Finacode describes reconciliation and close agents and multi-ERP workflows. | Which ERP and source systems are covered? What workflows and assurance evidence are in scope? How are thresholds, segregation of duties, and data handling addressed? What service terms and customer references can you verify? |
These descriptions come from the providers themselves. Confirm current availability, scope, security and assurance documentation, and commercial terms directly before making a selection; the sources do not provide verified prices or a neutral comparative test. KPMG’s connector count and Finacode’s product and assurance statements are provider-published claims, not evidence of close outcomes. KPMG, SAP, Sage, Finacode
How to pilot an AI close workflow safely
Start with one repeatable workflow whose inputs, expected outputs, and escalation conditions can be defined. Treat the pilot as a controlled evaluation in your own environment, not as proof that a product will produce the same result elsewhere.
- Choose a bounded process. Select a routine workflow with identifiable source records and a clear point where a person can review the result. Define what success and an exception mean before turning on automation.
- Map data and permissions. List the systems and records the agent may read, the records it may change, and any action it cannot take. Keep system-of-record boundaries explicit.
- Set approval rules. Document which actions require human approval, what thresholds trigger escalation, who may approve, and how segregation of duties is preserved.
- Test against known cases. Use representative records, including expected matches, known exceptions, and incomplete or ambiguous inputs. Record the expected result, observed result, and reviewer disposition.
- Run in parallel with human review. Compare agent-prepared work with the existing reviewed process before relying on it operationally. Require reviewers to examine the underlying evidence rather than accepting a summary alone.
- Measure locally and decide. Track reconciliations prepared, exception precision, rework, review time, posting errors, control exceptions, and close milestones. Compare with a human-reviewed baseline and retain the results for the decision to expand, adjust, or stop.
Those measures are a practical way to evaluate a pilot, not outcomes established for any named product. The reviewed sources do not establish an independent, directly comparable statistic for how much close agents improve duration, accuracy, or productivity. A reported result for a different finance activity should not be used to predict close results.

Controls to establish before production
When AI affects accounting judgments, transaction processing, or disclosure preparation, controls over financial reporting need to reflect that use. KPMG’s 2026 board oversight paper calls for updating internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) accordingly. It also warns that structured communication between agents is not, on its own, a control. KPMG’s 2026 board oversight paper
- Access: Define the agent’s data access and action permissions, and assign an owner who can review and change them.
- Approval: Keep approval rights separate from preparation where required by the organization’s segregation-of-duties policy.
- Thresholds: Document when a result must be escalated and who is responsible for handling it.
- Traceability: Retain the inputs, proposed action, action taken, supporting material, and human decision so the process can be reconstructed.
- Testing and accountability: Document testing and name the people accountable for the workflow and its controls.
Common failure modes and how to respond
The agent proposes a plausible but unsupported result
Require the reviewer to trace a proposed match, variance explanation, or draft entry back to supporting records. If the source data does not support the result, treat it as an exception and correct the input or workflow rather than accepting the explanation.
Exceptions do not reach the right person
Test the escalation route before production: create or identify cases that should cross the configured thresholds, confirm they reach the assigned reviewer, and confirm the reviewer can see the reason for escalation. Update ownership or routing when cases are missed.
Permissions allow more than the workflow needs
Review which systems and records the agent can read or change, then narrow access to the documented purpose of the workflow. Verify that approval gates still apply after integrations or configuration changes.
Best Value
Activity cannot be reconstructed
If reviewers cannot determine what information the agent used, what it proposed, or what action followed, the evidence trail is insufficient for dependable oversight. Make traceable records and documented testing part of the workflow design, rather than relying on a final status message.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Provider and professional-services pages describe capabilities such as transaction matching, close status visibility, variance analysis, draft preparation, and configurable autonomy. Those descriptions are useful for identifying questions to ask, but they are not independent comparative evaluations. The available sources do not establish that one implementation pattern is universally better, provide a neutral product benchmark, or demonstrate guaranteed close acceleration or error reduction.
Finacode’s website displays figures including “230+” chains reconciled and “1,000+” data sources and says SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type I are attested, with Type II in progress. These are vendor-published product and assurance statements, not independent close outcome statistics; verify the current status and scope directly. Finacode
