Thermogalvanic-cell efficiency can be badly overstated if the calculation misses heat carried through the electrolyte by moving liquid. A National Taiwan University research release published on October 7, 2026, reports that conventional estimates were almost 30 times too high in some tested cases when compared with simultaneous measurements of electrical power and total heat flow. The result is a warning about measurement methods—not evidence that every thermocell estimate is wrong by that amount.
How thermogalvanic cells turn heat into electricity
Thermogalvanic cells, also called thermocells, use two electrodes and a water-based electrolyte to convert a temperature difference directly into electricity. They have no moving mechanical parts. Because they may operate with low-temperature heat, they are being studied as a way to harvest waste heat that conventional steam-turbine generation is poorly suited to use.

Their simplicity creates a measurement challenge: the electrolyte is both part of the electrochemical system and a fluid that can transport heat. A temperature difference can set liquid in motion, carrying heat from the hot side toward the cold side. That heat transfer does not necessarily produce corresponding electrical output.
Why conventional efficiency calculations can mislead
Efficiency compares electrical energy produced with heat transferred through the device. If a calculation omits heat moved by circulating liquid, it can undercount the heat input and report an efficiency that is too high. Circulation can also weaken the temperature gradient the cell relies on.

The National Taiwan University release says earlier studies often used heat-flow methods developed for solid-state thermoelectrics. Those approaches assume heat moves through a stationary material, an assumption that may not capture heat carried by moving electrolyte. In the reported comparison, conventional calculations agreed with direct measurements in some cases; in others, they produced estimates almost 30 times higher. The release does not provide the case-specific data behind that maximum, so it should be read as a reported result for some tested conditions, not a universal correction factor.
What simultaneous measurement changes
The researchers report measuring actual electrical power and total heat flux at the same time while a thermocell operated. Measuring both quantities directly allows the efficiency calculation to account for heat crossing the device, including heat transported by liquid flow, rather than inferring heat flow from a stationary-material model.

This distinction matters when comparing designs. If the heat denominator is inaccurate, a configuration can appear more efficient even when it produces less useful electrical output relative to the heat it actually receives. The release says that increasing the distance between electrodes looked beneficial under conventional calculations, but direct measurement showed the opposite trend.

In the tested cell configuration, the researchers report an optimum incline of 60 degrees relative to gravity. They attribute the improvement to suppressing large-scale liquid circulation while still allowing enough movement to transport the chemical species needed for continued electricity generation. The release says this increased directly measured efficiency relative to the Carnot limit without requiring new materials, membranes, or more complex cell structures.

The 60-degree result is specific to the design and conditions tested. The release does not give enough methodological detail to establish that angle as optimal for other thermocells, electrolyte formulations, or operating conditions. It does show why orientation should be controlled and reported when thermocell performance is measured.

The practical lesson is to treat efficiency figures cautiously unless the measurement accounts for total heat flow through the operating device. For technical comparisons, readers should look for whether power and heat flux were measured simultaneously, whether fluid circulation was captured, and whether the cell’s orientation was specified.

The findings are reported in an Asia Research News release attributed to National Taiwan University, which identifies Energy Conversion and Management as the journal. The underlying journal article and its methods were not available for independent review here, so the detailed measurements and design results should be attributed to the release rather than treated as independently audited results. The release presents thermocells as a possible route for low-temperature waste-heat recovery; it does not establish a market size, deployed capacity, or commercial performance level.
