A watch with built-in GNSS can record a route independently, but its accuracy depends on the watch, its settings and the surroundings. In a 2026 field study of six consumer watches, mean horizontal error ranged from about 1.5 to 3 meters on an open-sky route and 6.7 to 13 meters on a dense urban-canyon route. Those results describe the tested watches and routes—not a guarantee for every smartwatch.
Can a smartwatch track your route without your phone?
Yes, if the watch has built-in GNSS (the satellite-positioning technology that includes GPS) and the activity app records from the watch’s receiver. In that setup, the phone’s location receiver is not needed to record the watch’s route.

Phone-free route recording is not the same as offline navigation. Maps, turn-by-turn directions, cellular service and emergency communications are separate features; whether they work without a phone depends on the watch, app, connectivity and downloaded content. Check the specific model and app rather than assuming that built-in GPS provides all of them.
What accuracy can you expect?
There is no single accuracy figure that applies to every watch or activity. One useful measured example comes from a 2026 field study that compared six consumer watches with a survey-grade Leica GS16 receiver on an open-sky route and a dense urban-canyon route.

| Test setting | Mean horizontal error reported | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Open-sky route | Approximately 1.5–3 m across the tested watches; the Apple Watch SE 2 had a reported mean deviation of 1.457 m. | Results for that study’s devices and route, not a guarantee for other watches or routes. |
| Dense urban-canyon route | 6.7–13 m across the tested watches. | Buildings and other obstructions can make route positioning substantially less accurate. |
The tested devices were Garmin 735XT, Garmin 735XT v2, Garmin 235, Amazfit Bip U Pro, Apple Watch SE 2 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. The study is useful evidence of how setting affects results, but it does not establish the performance of newer models. The authors suggest differences in device generation and GNSS architecture may help explain performance differences; that is a proposed explanation, not a proven causal test. Why does smartwatch GPS drift?
Satellite signals can be blocked or reflected before they reach the watch. GPS.gov puts the practical effect plainly: “Your accuracy worsens near buildings, bridges, and trees.” It also identifies satellite geometry, atmospheric conditions and receiver quality as factors in user accuracy; reflected signals, or multipath, can also affect a position estimate. GPS.gov’s accuracy guidance explains these factors and notes that map errors can make a correctly determined position appear misplaced.

- Dense streets: tall buildings can block direct signals and reflect others, producing a wandering or offset track.
- Trees and bridges: cover and structures can reduce or complicate satellite reception.
- Receiver and settings: watch design and the satellite signals or modes it supports affect what it can use, but specifications alone do not predict accuracy on every route.
Does multi-band GPS make a watch more accurate?
It can help in some conditions, but it does not guarantee a consistently accurate track. Garmin explains that multi-band mode tracks more than one satellite-signal frequency and may improve rejection of reflected signals. The benefit still depends on the receiver implementation, settings and surroundings. Garmin’s explanation of dual-frequency and multi-band GPS describes the feature; it is not a model-by-model accuracy test.

A useful test should match the places you plan to go—such as open trails, tree cover or dense city streets—and state the route and measurement method. Battery life in the GNSS mode you intend to use also matters. The available evidence here does not establish a comprehensive ranking of watches currently sold in 2026.

Is elevation as accurate as the route on a map?
No. Horizontal route accuracy and elevation accuracy are separate measures. The 2026 study reported notable vertical offsets on its urban route, including errors around 7–9 m for some tested devices. A watch that traces a route reasonably well on a map should not therefore be assumed to measure elevation equally well. The 2026 ISPRS Archives smartwatch-positioning analysis is a further source on this distinction.

- Consider the setting first: a track through a dense city or beneath cover may be less reliable than one recorded under open sky.
- Separate the measures you care about. A displayed position, total distance, route shape, pace and elevation are related, but one result does not prove the others are accurate.
- Check whether the watch’s activity app records using the watch’s own GNSS, and whether any available satellite mode is enabled.
- Remember that the map itself can be inaccurate: a plotted point may look misplaced even when the receiver’s position is sound.
For Apple Watch users assessing compass readings specifically, Apple documents factors affecting the Compass app’s accuracy and performance; that guidance concerns the compass, not a general route-tracking accuracy promise. Apple’s Apple Watch Compass accuracy guidance was published November 14, 2025.
