A fraud investigation agent should treat an alert as a reason to investigate, not as proof or permission to act. With TigerGraph, it can expand relevant relationships, show the records and paths behind each finding, identify what remains unknown, and ask for more evidence or human review when that could change the decision.
Why should an agent treat an alert as a starting point?
A risk score, customer report, or analyst request identifies a case worth examining. It does not establish that fraud occurred. A score may reflect an upstream model’s estimate; the agent still needs to show what evidence supports the concern and what limitations apply.

The useful investigation questions are concrete: “Which transactions are connected to the flagged transaction?” and “What evidence supports the suspected fraud pattern?” An agent should answer those with inspectable records and relationships, rather than turning a score into a verdict.

TigerGraph GSQL is a graph querying and analysis language. Queries can traverse graph data, compute over it, and return or print results. TigerGraph’s pattern-matching documentation describes fixed- and variable-length multi-hop patterns, while its graph exploration documentation describes finding paths and nearby vertices. These are platform capabilities, not a packaged fraud agent or a prescribed fraud schema.
#1 Best Overall
An investigation graph might represent transactions, customers, cards, devices, accounts, counterparties, and prior cases as vertices, with typed relationships between them. The appropriate entities and edges depend on the organization’s available data, lawful basis for using it, and investigative purpose. A targeted query can follow selected relationships within a defined time window and hop limit; it should not search indefinitely across every connection.
For example, an illustrative query could look for transactions connected to a flagged payment through a card or device during a specified period. The result should expose each traversed path and the source records supporting it. A shared device or address is a relationship signal, not proof of shared intent: it may have an ordinary explanation, so the investigator needs relevant behavioral evidence before drawing a conclusion.
What should an evidence ledger record?
Each finding should be traceable to its origin. The agent can create a case ledger that distinguishes direct observations from contextual relationships and makes the query conditions reproducible.

- Finding: a concise description of the observed pattern, without overstating what it proves.
- Source record: the originating transaction, account, device, or other record, with its identifier and relevant time.
- Relationship path: the entities and typed edges connecting the alert to the finding.
- Scope: the query or rule, traversal limit, and time window used.
- Evidence type: whether the item is a direct record, a graph relationship, or contextual similarity.
- Limitations: missing records, ambiguous identifiers, or benign explanations that remain plausible.
This lets an analyst inspect not just the result but how the agent reached it. It also reduces the risk that a graph connection will be mistaken for proof.
How should the agent represent confidence and uncertainty?
Risk, evidence strength, and unresolved questions are different things and should not be collapsed into one number. A model may assign high risk while the case still lacks evidence needed to justify an action. Conversely, a strong individual record may establish a fact without proving the broader suspected pattern.
- Risk estimate: the model’s estimate of how concerning the case is, with the model or rule that produced it.
- Evidence strength: what the available records directly establish and how well they support the suspected pattern.
- Evidence completeness: which relevant records or checks are available and which are missing.
- Open questions: the specific facts that remain unresolved and what evidence could resolve them.
- Decision state: investigate further, request information, refer for review, or take an action explicitly permitted by policy.
If an answer to an open question could change the outcome, the agent should abstain from a consequential recommendation and request that evidence or route the case for review. Project reports describe prototypes that record uncertainty and approval routes, but they do not establish that those systems produce calibrated uncertainty.
How should prior cases and policy be used?
Retrieval can help an investigator find relevant policy text or similar historical cases. The agent should attach the policy’s citation, version, and date so the analyst can verify which rule it applied. A retrieved case is context or precedent, not proof that the current case has the same facts or outcome.
The system should also distinguish a case connected through a verified entity relationship from one retrieved only because its text or vector representation seems similar. Similarity can help locate material to inspect; it does not confirm a match.
Who should control the decision and any action?
Deterministic policy code should define which actions are permitted, what evidence or conditions are required, and when approval is necessary. The agent can assemble evidence and make an explainable recommendation, but a high risk estimate alone does not authorize a payment decline, account restriction, or regulatory filing. Consequential decisions need a review path appropriate to the organization’s policy and circumstances; the prototype reports do not establish one universal regulatory rule.
Design choices involve trade-offs rather than a single best arrangement:
| Choice | Potential benefit | Risk or cost to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Graph search rather than isolated transaction scoring | Can expose relationship paths that a single-transaction view may not show. | Requires suitable graph data and query controls; connections can create false associations. |
| Bounded orchestration rather than open-ended agent-directed tools | Constrains tool use and can make steps easier to reproduce and audit. | May be less flexible; implementations must still manage latency and tool failures. |
| Human approval rather than automatic action | Creates a review point for decisions with significant or hard-to-reverse effects. | Adds review workload and can slow resolution; routing rules must be clear. |
These are design considerations, not measured comparative results. The right controls depend on the action’s reversibility, expected harm, policy authority, and quality of the evidence.

Case memory should retain the evidence, uncertainty, decision, and eventual outcome with their timestamps and provenance. Later information may change what investigators believe, but it should not silently rewrite what was known when the original decision was made. Preserve the historical view and record later updates as new, dated evidence.

Evaluate the workflow, not just the score
Test on appropriately labeled data separated by time so evaluation reflects the order in which cases would actually arrive. Report the base rate and methodology alongside precision, recall, false-positive burden, calibration, abstention behavior, and analyst workload. Evaluate whether investigators can trace findings to records and whether the system requests more information in cases where it could change the decision.
Recent practitioner and third-party project descriptions illustrate uncertainty-aware investigation patterns, but they are prototype or project accounts rather than independent validation of this exact system. The available evidence does not establish improved fraud detection, calibrated uncertainty, production readiness, or regulatory suitability for an agent of this description. TigerGraph’s platform documentation establishes graph-query and exploration capabilities, not those outcomes.
