A starting quarterback’s absence can change how a college football offense operates, but there is no single, evidence-based number for how much production typically falls. The effect depends on the replacement’s experience and skills, the team’s system, the opponent, game conditions, and other lineup changes. Coaches may keep the same offense while adjusting play selection and emphasis to fit the backup.
What changes when the backup takes over?
The offense still has the same playbook, but the players executing it may have different levels of familiarity and different strengths. That can affect how reliably the quarterback communicates calls, reads the defense, makes decisions, and delivers the ball. It may also influence which plays the staff chooses.

These are possible mechanisms, not guaranteed outcomes. A quarterback change does not automatically mean a team installs a new scheme or becomes run-heavy. The sources available do not establish how often teams make particular adjustments.
Preparation and familiarity
Practice repetitions and command of the offense can matter when a backup enters a game. In a November 8, 2010 Tennessee media luncheon transcript, head coach Derek Dooley described continuing to give the other quarterback repetitions and argued for developing a backup in case the starter was unavailable or did not perform well. That is one coach’s explanation of preparation, not controlled evidence that repetitions produce a specific statistical improvement.

Skill fit and play selection
A mobile replacement might make designed quarterback runs or movement plays more attractive to the staff. If the backup is less experienced as a passer, coaches could favor shorter throws or lower-risk calls. Conversely, a backup with a different strength may encourage other choices. These examples are conditional: they should be checked against the team’s actual play selection rather than assumed from a depth chart.
How much worse does an offense get without its starter?
There is no reliable universal estimate in the cited material for the average offensive effect of losing a college starting quarterback. A team’s performance may change after a quarterback leaves, but a before-and-after difference alone cannot show that the quarterback caused it.

Opponent quality, score and time remaining, field position, pass protection, receivers, the running game, and other injuries can all affect results. A short stretch of plays or one game can also be misleading. The NCAA football injury-surveillance study covers injuries across the sport; it does not measure offensive performance by quarterback status and should not be used as a proxy for the effect of a quarterback absence.

Use several complementary measures across a meaningful sample of plays or drives, and compare like situations where possible. CollegeFootballData.com defines offensive EPA per play as average expected points added per play and labels higher values as better on its season team metrics page. EPA per play can help describe snap-level efficiency, but it does not by itself explain why a result changed.

What coaches say about backup readiness
Dooley put the preparation concern plainly at the November 8, 2010 Tennessee media luncheon: “It’s rare for a starting quarterback to go through the season without getting dinged up, hurt, doesn’t perform well, something.” This is a coach’s view about preparing another quarterback, not an empirical injury rate or a universal finding about all teams.
