In a study published in Nature Astronomy on 5 October 2026, researchers interpret that chemistry—and a repeating signal in TESS observations—as evidence for a candidate planet that may have formed from matter its star expelled late in life. The planet has not been directly imaged, and the observations do not establish its existence beyond doubt.
What did astronomers find?
HS 0209+0832 is a hot, young white dwarf: the compact remnant left after a star sheds its outer layers. The study estimates its effective temperature at 35,800 ± 500 kelvin and its cooling age at about 5 million years. Ultraviolet spectra show metals and helium in its atmosphere. Because such elements settle out of a white dwarf’s atmosphere, their presence is interpreted as evidence that material is still falling onto the star.

To work out what that material is made of, the team reanalysed archival Hubble/STIS, FUSE and VLT/UVES ultraviolet spectra, alongside Pan-STARRS photometry and Gaia parallax data. They modelled the white dwarf’s atmosphere, identified spectral lines and estimated abundances while accounting for processes such as radiative levitation and element diffusion. The reanalysis identified copper and niobium lines that had not been identified in earlier work, including five Nb III and 57 Nb IV lines. The authors measured abundances for nine metals and set upper limits for 15 others.

The accreted material has an unusual mix: high carbon, strong enrichment in trans-iron elements such as zinc, copper and especially niobium, very little silicon, and no detected iron. Its measured nickel-to-iron ratio is greater than 2.09. For comparison, the paper gives a ratio of about 0.05 for CI chondrites and bulk Earth. The authors point to the high carbon and enrichment in elements made through the slow neutron-capture process, or s-process, as key clues that the material is unlike familiar rocky Solar System matter.

The proposed explanation begins when the white dwarf’s progenitor star was in its late giant phase. Such stars cast off material; some of that ejecta may have collected into a disc, from which a planet could eventually form. That would make the world “second-generation”: formed from material expelled after the star’s main-sequence lifetime, rather than from the original disc that made the star and its first planetary system. The paper discusses other possibilities too, including a pre-existing planet gaining a second-generation atmosphere. Neither pathway has been observed unfolding in this system.
First author Jamie T. Williams described the idea this way: “Second-generation planets are worlds that form out of the material a star casts off as it dies.” Williams is a PhD student in the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick; the quotation was reported by the European Research Council on 6 October 2026.

How does the TESS signal fit in?
TESS photometry contains a sinusoidal signal with a reported period of 4.399 ± 0.026 days and an amplitude of 0.120% ± 0.018%. The authors discuss two possible planetary explanations: changing thermal emission as a close-in planet rotates through day and night, or a comet-like tail of material from an evaporating giant planet crossing the star’s view. The signal supports the candidate interpretation but does not uniquely identify its physical cause.

The study estimates that atmospheric escape from a candidate giant could provide more material than the white dwarf’s measured accretion rate. That does not mean all the escaping gas falls onto the star; the authors note that much of it may not reach the white dwarf. The interpretation also depends on uncertain formation timescales, accretion and atmospheric physics.

What is established—and what remains a candidate?
The evidence is indirect. Astronomers infer the composition of material polluting the white dwarf’s atmosphere and observe a periodic brightness variation; they have not directly photographed a planet. The chemical pattern is the main basis for the second-generation interpretation, while the TESS signal is suggestive of a close companion with more than one proposed explanation. The authors’ result makes planet formation from stellar ejecta a plausible possibility, but one candidate cannot show how common such planets are.
| Question | First-generation planetary material | Proposed second-generation material |
|---|---|---|
| When and where did it form? | From material associated with the star’s original planetary system. | Potentially from material expelled during the progenitor star’s giant phase, after its main-sequence life. |
| What chemistry is expected in this comparison? | Not one uniform composition; familiar rocky bodies provide the contrast in the paper. | The measured material around HS 0209+0832 has strong s-process and niobium enrichment and differs from known Solar System rocky material. |
The comparison describes the study’s interpretation, not a rule that every first-generation body has the same composition. The primary report is Williams and colleagues’ Nature Astronomy paper, published 5 October 2026.
