The right choice depends on the exact model: wiring trickle-charges battery models but serves as operating power for wired models. Check the model’s current power requirements before connecting anything.
Which power options can a Ring Video Doorbell use?
| Power option | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Rechargeable battery | The doorbell operates from its battery, which you recharge as needed. | Battery and charging details vary by model. Ring’s hardwiring guidance covers battery-powered models. |
| Existing doorbell wiring | Compatible low-voltage wiring trickle-charges a battery-powered doorbell. A wired model uses compatible wiring as its operating power. | Confirm the exact model’s voltage and VA requirements, transformer capacity, and chime compatibility. See Ring’s battery-model instructions and hardwiring guidelines. |
| Ring Plug-In Adapter | A supported adapter supplies power from an indoor outlet to compatible doorbells. | Verify the adapter generation and your doorbell model. Ring lists the second-generation adapter as 24 VDC, 500 mA in its hardwiring guidelines. |
| Compatible Ring Solar Charger | A solar charger can help extend battery life on compatible battery models. | Panel placement and sunlight matter. Ring says its compatible chargers need roughly three to four hours of direct sunlight daily to help keep a battery doorbell charged longer; this is not a guarantee of a particular charge level. See Ring’s solar charger guidance. |
| Wired-only power | The doorbell operates from compatible wiring or an approved model-specific power accessory. | Do not assume that a wired model supports battery or solar power; check its instructions and compatibility requirements. |
Does a Ring doorbell need to be hardwired?
No—not every model does. A battery-powered Video Doorbell can operate from its rechargeable battery without existing doorbell wiring. Compatible wiring or a supported Plug-In Adapter can provide a trickle charge, but wiring does not turn every battery model into a wired-only device or necessarily eliminate battery charging.

A wired-only model, by contrast, needs a compatible source specified for that model. Ring groups products with different electrical requirements, so the brand name alone is not enough to determine the power source. Use the model-specific information in Ring’s hardwiring guidelines.

Can you use existing doorbell wiring?
Often, if the wiring, transformer, chime, and doorbell model are compatible. Ring’s troubleshooting guidance gives these broad ranges: 8–24 VAC and 5–40 VA for battery-powered doorbells, and 16–24 VAC and 10–40 VA for some wired doorbells. Other wired models have different requirements, so these ranges are not universal specifications. Check the precise model before installation using Ring’s power troubleshooting guidance and model-specific hardwiring guidelines.

Not compatible with Peephole Cam or Video Doorbell Elite.
Transformer capacity matters as well as voltage. Ring’s troubleshooting guidance identifies 16 VAC, 30 VA for its Hardwired Transformer and gives that rating in multiple-doorbell guidance. It also notes that an undersized transformer, more than one doorbell on a transformer, or power-intensive features can contribute to power problems. Ring recommends 16- to 20-gauge wire in this troubleshooting guidance. Confirm the transformer and chime requirements for your setup rather than treating any one figure as a fit for every model.
Can you power a Ring doorbell from an outlet?
A supported Ring Plug-In Adapter can connect certain compatible doorbells to an indoor outlet. The adapter is an accessory with model-specific compatibility; do not substitute an arbitrary power supply. Ring lists the second-generation Plug-In Adapter at 24 VDC, 500 mA in its hardwiring guidelines. Check that your exact doorbell supports the adapter and that you have the correct generation.

Can solar power a Ring doorbell?
A compatible Ring Solar Charger can help extend the battery life of supported battery-powered doorbells; it is supplemental rather than a guaranteed replacement for charging. Ring advises roughly three to four hours of direct sunlight each day to help keep a compatible battery doorbell charged longer. Actual results depend on sun exposure, device settings, and motion activity. Ring says solar chargers are not ideal for covered porches and are not recommended indoors. Check compatibility and placement guidance on Ring’s solar charger information page.
What transformer does your Ring doorbell need?
Use the voltage and VA range stated for your exact doorbell and account for any existing chime or additional doorbells on the same transformer. Ring’s general troubleshooting ranges—8–24 VAC, 5–40 VA for battery-powered models and 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA for some wired models—do not cover every wired model. Its broader hardwiring guidelines divide requirements by model. If the transformer rating is unclear or does not match, do not guess; use the exact model instructions or have a qualified electrician assess it.

How to choose the right power source
- Identify the exact model. Find the model name and consult its current Ring instructions for supported power sources and electrical requirements.
- Decide whether you want to use wiring. For a battery model, compatible wiring provides a trickle charge. For a wired-only model, use its specified transformer or approved accessory.
- Check the existing electrical setup. Verify transformer voltage and VA, chime compatibility, and whether other doorbells share the transformer.
- Consider an outlet adapter or solar only if supported. Confirm compatibility for the exact doorbell and accessory; for solar, consider whether the mounting position receives enough direct sunlight.
- Use an electrician when needed. Follow local electrical rules and hire a qualified electrician if you are unsure about the wiring or installation requirements.
Safety and signs of a power problem
Turn off power at the breaker or fuse box before examining or connecting doorbell wiring. Never connect a Ring Video Doorbell directly to mains voltage or use an incompatible power supply: Ring warns that incompatible sources can damage the device and cause electric shock. Local laws and building codes may require a qualified electrician for hardwiring. Some older models or particular installation setups may need additional wiring components, so follow the instructions for the exact generation.
If the doorbell loses power or features stop working, check the battery charge first on a battery model. If it is wired, compare the installation with the model’s power requirements and use Device Health in the Ring app to review its status. Ring lists a flashing red light, power loss, an in-home chime that buzzes or rings spontaneously, and power-intensive features becoming unavailable as possible signs of a power issue. Its power troubleshooting page covers these symptoms and electrical checks.
