Start with Finder on the Home screen if your Galaxy has it; then search My Files and the app that likely contains the item. Finder can search certain app content, while My Files is better for locating files by name, type, date, and storage location. Neither searches every item on the phone.
1. Try Finder for a remembered word or clue
On supported devices, Finder can search across selected Galaxy apps, which makes it a useful first step when you remember a phrase or topic but not a filename. Samsung’s current guide says the Home Finder experience is available on devices running One UI 8.5 or later, starting with the Galaxy S26 series. It is off by default: open Home screen settings and turn on Show Finder on Home screen. Availability and results depend on the device, software, region, and supported apps. Samsung’s Finder guide

Samsung lists natural-language search for Voice Recorder, Recorded Calls, Calendar, Notes, Reminders, and My Files. For example, search a distinctive subject from a note or a phrase you recall from a recording. Finder may also show reservation cards or suggestions when Personal Data Intelligence has relevant information from selected apps; that is not a guarantee that every app or item will appear.
2. Use My Files to search names, dates, types, and locations
If you are looking for a saved file, open My Files and tap its search icon. Enter part of the filename or a distinctive word. If the name escapes you, open Recent files, then browse a likely category such as Images, Videos, Audio, Documents, or Downloads. Samsung’s instructions also describe filtering by file type or time, including files saved yesterday, in the past seven days, or in the past 30 days on the documented UK experience. Check storage locations individually. A file may be in internal storage or on an SD card, if your model supports one. If you use external storage, select that location in My Files rather than assuming a search of one location covers it all.
When the filename is only partly remembered
Try a short, unusual part of the name rather than a generic term. Some older Samsung documentation for One UI 4.1.1 describes searching all files or only the current folder, looking in filenames or information inside files, sorting by name, date, size, or type, and matching imperfect filename entries. Those are version-specific capabilities, not a promise about every current Galaxy. Use them only if the controls appear in your version of My Files. Samsung One UI feature documentation

3. Search the app that created or downloaded the item
If Finder and My Files do not find it, search the app that owns the content. Some offline downloads from services such as Netflix are stored securely inside the service app and normally do not appear in My Files. Return to the app where you received, created, or downloaded the item and look there instead.

For a photo, check Gallery as well as My Files. For a note, appointment, reminder, or recording, search the corresponding app—especially if the remembered clue is about what the item said or when it was created rather than its filename.

4. Check Recycle bin or Trash if it may have been deleted
On Samsung UK’s documented setup, enable My Files’ Recycle bin through My Files > menu > Settings. To restore a file, open My Files > menu > Recycle bin, select it, and restore it. Samsung’s US file-management guide says My Files Trash retains deleted files for 30 days and that the feature is not available on tablets. A quick way to narrow the search
- Remember a word or subject? Search it in Finder if Home Finder is available; otherwise search the app most likely to contain it.
- Think it is a file? In My Files, try part of its name, then Recent files and the relevant category.
- Know roughly when it arrived? Use a date or time filter if your My Files version offers one.
- Could it be app-managed or a photo? Check the original app or Gallery.
- Could it have been deleted or stored externally? Check the relevant Recycle bin or Trash, then inspect the SD card or other storage location if your device uses one.
Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by carrier and software version. Its US file-management guidance also covers copying or moving files to compatible microSD cards and USB OTG storage; external-storage support depends on the model, and encrypted music or purchases may not be movable.
