A Raspberry Pi can run SMART drive checks and send a phone notification when a test starts or finishes. The important caveat is that the drive’s connection must pass SMART commands through, and a notification is not itself a health verdict. This build’s exact Pi model, drive, adapter, notification service, schedule and test results are not specified, so the setup below separates the verified approach from implementation choices.
What the station does
The Pi is the computer running smartmontools. Its smartctl utility can read SMART information and start supported drive self-tests; smartd can monitor storage devices. The project documentation lists ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS and NVMe support, but support at the software level does not guarantee a particular USB adapter or enclosure will work.

Automation can connect the pieces: identify a drive, start a test, check its log later, and send a message about the event. The sources do not establish which scheduler, script or messaging service this station uses, so those details should not be mistaken for confirmed build choices.

The drive interface, power requirements and SMART passthrough all matter. Choose a connection appropriate to the actual drive—such as an interface-compatible adapter or enclosure—and confirm that it allows the Pi to issue and read the relevant SMART commands. The available documentation does not verify any specific bridge, enclosure or drive model as compatible.

- Identify whether the drive is SATA, SAS, NVMe or another supported type.
- Make sure the adapter or enclosure provides adequate power for that drive.
- Confirm SMART commands pass through the connection, rather than assuming ordinary file access is enough.
- Check that the drive supports the self-test you plan to run.
Start an extended SMART self-test
For a drive that supports it, the documented command pattern is smartctl -t long /dev/sdX. Replace /dev/sdX with the device path actually identified on the Pi; it is only an example placeholder, not a universal device name. Confirm the target and test support before starting, especially on a system with more than one attached disk.
The Debian Bookworm smartctl(8) manual says an extended self-test can take several hours. Duration varies by device. A running test can affect performance, and frequent operating-system I/O may lengthen it, so avoid presenting a fixed completion time as guaranteed.

Read the result instead of treating a notification as a diagnosis
The same manual documents -l selftest for inspecting the drive’s self-test log. A useful automation flow should distinguish between the test being accepted, the test completing, and the result recorded in that log. A message that says “test started” or “test completed” reports an event; it does not establish that the drive is healthy.

Choose a phone-notification route
One documented option is Telegram’s Bot API. Its sendMessage method sends text to a chat over HTTPS. Telegram requires the user to start the bot or add it to a group first; a bot cannot initiate a conversation with a user on its own, as explained in Telegram’s bot introduction.
Telegram is an option, not a confirmed service used by this particular station. If using a bot, keep its token private: Telegram warns that anyone holding the token can control the bot. Store secrets outside public scripts and examples, and use a protected configuration or secret store rather than publishing a working token.

What is and is not established about this build
The supported core is a Raspberry Pi running SMART tooling, a compatible physical connection, a supported self-test, and an alerting mechanism. The exact board, OS release, drive, adapter, script, schedule, notification provider and test outcome are not identified. Those specifics should only be added when verified against the actual hardware and implementation.
