A new simulation suite called MEGATRON models how a Milky Way-mass galaxy could have developed from the era of the first stars into later cosmic epochs. It is not a recording of our galaxy’s past: it is a physics-based reconstruction scientists can test against observations.
What does the MEGATRON simulation show?
MEGATRON follows a modeled Milky Way-mass environment from Population III star formation—the first generation of stars—through cosmic noon, a later period of vigorous galaxy growth. The introductory paper, published in The Open Journal of Astrophysics on September 30, 2026, describes simulations initialized at zero metallicity, which means their starting material contains no elements heavier than helium. The models resolve halos below the atomic-cooling threshold and reach parsec-scale resolution.

That lets the researchers explore how small early structures and their gas evolve within an environment destined to host a galaxy comparable in mass to the Milky Way. The simulation reconstructs a plausible history from specified physical laws and starting conditions; it does not directly reveal the exact sequence of events in our own galaxy. How does it model stars, gas and radiation?
The suite combines cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics—tracking gravity, moving gas, and radiation—with detailed chemistry. Its non-equilibrium thermochemistry network follows primordial species, molecules and metals as their abundances change over time, while multifrequency radiation transport models radiation at different energies as it moves through the simulated environment.

This matters because early stars do more than add light: their radiation and stellar feedback can heat and alter surrounding gas, affecting where later stars form. MEGATRON’s authors identify several connected research goals:
- Star formation during cosmic dawn.
- Galaxy formation and the interstellar medium during reionization, when radiation from early sources changed the state of intergalactic gas.
- The circumgalactic medium—the gas around galaxies—at cosmic noon.
- Reionization in a local-volume environment, linking distant-universe models with near-field cosmology.
Why create more than 175,000 simulated spectra?
The introductory paper reports a library of more than 175,000 simulated galaxy spectra. A spectrum records how much light a galaxy emits at different wavelengths. Researchers can compare these predicted patterns with observations of distant galaxies, including those made by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), to assess whether a model produces plausible observable properties.

The authors report that the models reproduce much of the diversity of galaxy spectra observed by JWST in a ΛCDM cosmological context. That is a comparison between simulated predictions and observed populations, not proof that the model has recovered the Milky Way’s precise biography or that every simulated galaxy matches a particular observed object. A separate study uses three cosmological radiation-hydrodynamic zoom simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy’s progenitor. It compares two treatments of gas: non-equilibrium thermochemistry with local radiation, and traditional photoionization-equilibrium calculations using a uniform ultraviolet background.

The authors report that these choices change the modeled circumgalactic medium’s thermochemistry and the absorption and emission signatures researchers would predict. The comparison illustrates why the details of the physics matter: different approximations can lead to different expectations for what telescopes should detect. Read the related MEGATRON study.
What can—and can’t—the simulation establish?
Simulations are useful for testing whether a set of physical processes can produce galaxies with properties like those observed. But results depend on what the model includes and how it represents processes that are difficult to resolve directly. The introductory paper identifies several limitations:

- Active galactic nuclei are not included.
- The adopted stellar-population and chemical-yield models have limitations, which can affect predicted light and the production of elements.
- Predictions need to be assessed against observations; a modeled Milky Way-mass environment is not a direct observation of the Milky Way’s formation.
A popular account of MEGATRON also describes merging early galaxies and a possible explanation for an iron-abundance puzzle in very small galaxies involving the first stars and supernova enrichment. Those are claims reported in that coverage; the introductory paper’s surfaced abstract does not independently establish that specific interpretation. They should therefore be treated as a reported possibility, not as a confirmed conclusion of the introductory paper.

Why the “watch our galaxy being born” framing needs a caveat
“Watching” is a vivid way to describe visualizations generated from a simulation, not literal footage. Astronomers cannot observe the Milky Way’s earliest history as it happened. MEGATRON instead calculates how a modeled galaxy environment may evolve, then produces predictions that can be compared with distant galaxies and other evidence. That makes it a tool for investigating possible formation histories—not a time-lapse of our galaxy.
