A 2016 laboratory study showed that a mineral-based hydrogel could be shaped while wet, dried into rigid, transparent objects, and returned to a hydrogel by swelling it in water. The authors proposed “mineral plastics” as a possible new material class—but the demonstration does not show that it can replace conventional plastics or be recycled at industrial scale.
What the researchers made
The material combined very small amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanoparticles with poly(acrylic acid), which physically cross-linked the particles into a hydrogel. In the study, the wet material was shapeable and stretchable, and the authors reported that it could self-heal. The study, by Shengtong Sun and co-authors, appeared in Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

How the gel changes into a rigid object—and back
- Shape it while wet. The hydrogel can be formed and stretched before drying.
- Dry it. Drying produces free-standing, rigid, transparent objects with a plastic-like form.
- Soak it in water. The dried material swells and, according to the authors, recovers its initial hydrogel state.
This is a reversible change between a wet gel and a dried solid in the reported experiment. It should not be confused with proof of a conventional plastics recycling process: the paper describes recovery of the hydrogel state, not collection, sorting, reprocessing, or repeated recycling of consumer products.

What “mineral plastics” means here
The authors used “mineral plastics” for their proposed material concept and suggested that it might potentially replace conventional plastics. That is a possibility they raised, not a demonstrated product application. The reported material test does not establish that it outperforms plastic in packaging, household goods, or any other named use.

What the study does—and does not—establish
The article was first published on 22 July 2016, in volume 55, issue 39, pages 11765–11769. Its reported findings concern the material’s wet and dry forms and its response to water. The available sources do not establish commercial availability, manufacturing scale-up, industrial recycling, or a comparative life-cycle assessment.
- Demonstrated: a lab-made ACC and poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel that could be shaped, stretched, and dried into rigid, transparent objects; water swelling returned it to a hydrogel state.
- Not established: a recycling rate, a measured environmental benefit, biodegradability, large-scale production, or superiority to conventional plastics in a specific application.
To assess any future replacement claim, the material would need to be compared for a defined use—including functional performance, durability, manufacturability, recovery route, and environmental impact. Those comparisons are not supplied by the study’s reported demonstration.
