A fluorescent probe reported in 2015 was designed to detect heparin and its contaminant oversulfated chondroitin sulfate (OSCS). It pairs a heparin-recognizing peptide with a fluorogen that produces a signal when probe molecules aggregate in heparin’s presence. The work describes a possible basis for testing—not a validated clinical assay or an established production-release method.
How the fluorescent probe is designed to work
The probe combines two components: a peptide intended to recognize heparin and a fluorogen that provides the fluorescent signal. Chemistry World’s 2015 account says the probe molecules aggregate in the presence of heparin, producing fluorescence. The concept was presented as potentially useful for assessing blood-thinner dosage and adulteration, but the report does not establish a validated clinical test.

The underlying paper, by Yubin Ding, Leilei Shi and Hui Wei, appeared in Chemical Science in 2015 as “A ‘turn on’ fluorescent probe for heparin and its oversulfated chondroitin sulfate contaminant.” Chemistry World’s report describes the proposed application; the Wei Lab publication list records the paper’s bibliographic details.

Heparin is a naturally sourced anticoagulant with substantial structural heterogeneity. A potency measurement indicates anticoagulant activity, but by itself it does not establish that a sample has the right identity or is free of a particular contaminant.

The 2007–2008 contamination crisis involving OSCS illustrated the risk of relying on potency testing alone. A 2019 review in Medicina attributes more than 100 deaths in North America alone to the crisis. The review explains that identity-focused methods, including 300 MHz proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis, were added to the United States Pharmacopeia heparin monograph and other pharmacopeias after the event. How the probe fits alongside established controls
The fluorescent probe is a research approach, not evidence that established controls can be replaced. Quality control may need to answer different questions: whether a sample has expected anticoagulant potency, whether it is heparin, and whether a specific contaminant such as OSCS is present. A method suited to one question does not automatically answer the others.

The 2015 report and the 2019 review do not provide validated head-to-head performance data that would support ranking this probe against existing methods. They also do not establish the probe’s sensitivity, selectivity, sample-matrix performance, validation status for a particular setting, or inclusion in pharmacopeial controls. Operational compliance decisions should therefore be based on the applicable current official monograph and validated methods, not on the research concept alone.
Is the probe available as a test?
The cited sources describe published research and do not identify a commercially available probe, kit, or validated clinical test. They also do not establish a current regulatory or supplier status. A generic fluorescence instrument or other product should not be treated as equivalent to the specific research probe.
