A meteorite from Antarctica may preserve a record of magnetic fields in the solar system’s earliest days. In microscopic grains inside the meteorite, researchers found evidence of a field estimated at about 150–600 microteslas—roughly three to twelve times Earth’s present field. The result suggests magnetism may have helped move material through the disk around the young Sun, alongside gravity; it does not show that magnetism formed the solar system by itself.
What did scientists find in the meteorite?
A team led by Cauê Borlina studied calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions, or CAIs, in DOM 08006, a meteorite recovered in Antarctica. CAIs are among the earliest solid materials formed in the solar system. Purdue University describes DOM 08006 as having undergone comparatively little alteration, making it a valuable place to look for a preserved ancient signal.

The researchers estimate that the magnetic field recorded by the inclusions was about 150–600 microteslas. Purdue compares that estimate with Earth’s present magnetic field, describing it as roughly three to twelve times as strong. The signal is associated with material from approximately the first 20,000–200,000 years of solar-system history. These are estimates for the material and period examined, not universal measurements of every place or moment in the early solar system. The study was reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Purdue University’s account summarizes the finding.
How can a meteorite reveal conditions around the young Sun?
A meteorite is a space rock that survives its passage through an atmosphere and reaches the ground. Meteorites can preserve material from the bodies and processes that built the planets; NASA notes that studying them can help reveal the ages, compositions and histories of solar-system building blocks. NASA’s overview of meteors and meteorites explains the distinction and their scientific value.

In this case, the key evidence is not the meteorite’s overall appearance but tiny inclusions within it. Some minerals can retain remanent magnetization, a lasting record of magnetic conditions when the grains formed. By examining that record, researchers can estimate the field present at the time. The meteorite therefore acts as a physical archive: it does not provide a direct view of the ancient solar nebula, but its preserved minerals can constrain what conditions were like.
What might the magnetic field have done?
As the Sun formed, a cloud of gas and dust collapsed and flattened into a disk. Material in that protoplanetary disk later contributed to the Sun and planets. The magnetic signal measured in the CAIs provides a constraint for models of how gas and solid material moved through the very early disk.

The team interprets the finding as evidence that magnetism likely helped transport material. That matters because the earliest disk—before planets were forming—is a point of debate about which forces shaped its evolution. Borlina told Purdue: “Nowadays people don’t debate whether magnetism is present when planets are forming. But the debate is around the very early solar system, before planets are forming, when there’s just a disk. That’s where the debate still resides, and that’s where we’re operating now.”
The result does not make gravity irrelevant. Benjamin Weiss, Robert R. Shrock Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at MIT, said: “It has long been theorized that gravity caused this, but our measurements show magnetism likely played a role, possibly even a dominant one.” Borlina also emphasized that both forces matter: “Gravity is also playing a role. But we are now showing that, if you want to fully understand how the Sun and planets formed, you should include magnetic fields in the ingredients that make them.” The measurement supports including magnetism in explanations; it does not settle how much influence it had relative to gravity.

Why sample preservation matters
An ancient magnetic record is only useful if it has not been substantially overwritten or disturbed. Water, heating, collisions and processes on a meteorite’s parent body can change minerals or their magnetic signals. Purdue describes DOM 08006 as relatively unaltered, which makes it especially useful for this question, but the result still depends on interpreting a signal preserved in a specific sample.
That distinction is important: the study provides evidence from mineral grains, not a direct measurement made in the early solar disk. It is a physical clue that can test and refine models of the disk’s history, rather than a complete account of how the Sun and planets formed. MIT’s account of the study also describes the finding as evidence that magnetism may have played a role.
