Its privacy-first approach is a set of design choices—not a guarantee that collected data is harmless or encrypted.
What the tracker records—and how it groups activity
In an article published August 27, 2026, Idrissi describes a desktop utility that observes the application in the foreground, its visible window title, and time since keyboard or mouse input. It groups observations into activity periods and starts a new period when the application, title or idle state changes.

The dashboard is described as showing live activity, active and idle totals, recent periods, daily and seven-day analysis, rankings, and hourly and daily charts. These are the author’s descriptions of the project; they are not an independent verification of a particular release.

The data represents foreground focus and input inactivity, not what a person is thinking or whether work is productive. A window can remain focused while its user is distracted or away. Sampling also leaves gaps: because the app polls every few seconds, an idle transition may only be noticed after the idle threshold has already passed.

Why use Python, Tkinter and SQLite?
The author presents the stack as a fit for a small Windows utility whose activity tracking, analysis, reports and interface can live in one understandable codebase. Each choice has a practical trade-off rather than being a universal recommendation.

For Windows activity data, the article names pywin32 and psutil. Its described flow is Windows APIs to an activity snapshot, then tracking and state transitions, local SQLite storage, and finally the Tkinter dashboard and analysis. Standalone HTML reports are another output.

What “privacy-first” means here—and what it does not
Idrissi says the app requires no account, server, advertising or telemetry, and describes activity as staying on the user’s device. The stated database location is %LOCALAPPDATA%LocalTimeTrackerdataactivity.db, with reports in a neighboring reports directory. The author also says generated HTML reports are self-contained, without external scripts, fonts, trackers or network dependencies. These are project claims, not the results of an independent privacy audit or inspection of the current release.

Local storage is not encryption. The author explicitly warns that protection depends on the Windows account and disk. A database containing visible window titles may reveal document names, searches, email subjects or client information. Anyone considering the tool should treat its activity database and reports as sensitive personal data and protect access to the Windows account and device.

The browser integration described in the article normalizes recognized title suffixes so activity from the same tab can be grouped under a cleaner title. The named formats are Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi. The author says the app does not inspect page bodies; recording a browser window title is still different from collecting no browsing-related information.
Reports, testing and contribution practices
The author describes HTML reports as offline and self-contained, useful for viewing analysis without relying on an external service. Their actual privacy depends on where a user saves, shares or backs up the files; a local report can expose the same sensitive titles as the database.

For development, the project account says Python’s unittest covers tracking transitions, analytics, title normalization, categories, database behavior and report generation. It also describes GitHub Actions running tests for pull requests and changes to the main branch; tagged releases are said to run tests, build a Windows application and installer, and publish a SHA-256 checksum. These details describe the author’s stated workflow, not independently confirmed results for current code.

Limitations to weigh before relying on it
- Windows only: the project is described as a Windows desktop app, not a cross-platform tracker.
- Sampling gaps: polling cannot capture every moment or determine attention from a window’s foreground status.
- Sensitive local records: window titles can contain private information, and local storage is not encryption.
- Installer trust: the author’s article says the installer may trigger Windows SmartScreen because it is not signed with a trusted Authenticode certificate. As release details can change, check the current release’s signing and security information before installation.
