How a Laravel API Generator Lets Coding Agents Plan Before They Write

The Laravel API Generator’s MCP server lets compatible coding agents inspect entities, preview planned file changes, and generate API code through package tools—with review and manual follow-up still essential.

A Laravel API generator with an MCP server gives a compatible coding agent structured tools for inspecting entities, previewing file changes, and generating API code. Instead of asking an agent to hand-write each CRUD file, a developer can have it prepare a plan for review before generation. That makes the workflow more inspectable and repeatable; it does not, by itself, prove better productivity or code quality.

What the MCP server changes

The Laravel API Generator creates API components such as models, controllers, services, DTOs, requests, resources, policies, migrations, factories, seeders, and tests. Its MCP entry point exposes generator actions to compatible coding-agent clients through php artisan api-generator:mcp. The agent can call those actions rather than composing every artifact itself.

The package’s author, Loic Aron Mbassi Ewolo, framed the problem as agents writing CRUD files “slightly differently every time.” That is a motivation, not a measured finding. The practical distinction is that generation follows the package’s tools and conventions, while the developer can inspect a proposed file plan before authorizing generation.

What the four tools do

  • list-entities reports generated entities and the status of their files.
  • plan-api previews files to create or update and reports warnings without writing files.
  • generate-api generates code from the package’s API schema or an OpenAPI description.
  • add-fields adds fields to an existing entity, using an incremental migration and patching supported files.

The author describes the first two tools as read-only. Used in sequence, they support a review-first process: inspect the project’s generated entities, draft or refine a schema, preview the expected file changes, and ask a person to review the plan before generation. This is a useful boundary for agent-assisted work, but the review step still depends on the developer actually checking the plan and subsequent changes.

How to configure the documented Claude Code example

The author’s setup example installs the generator and Laravel MCP as development dependencies, then registers the Artisan command with Claude Code at project scope:

composer require --dev nameless/laravel-api-generator laravel/mcp
claude mcp add -s project laravel-api-generator -- php artisan api-generator:mcp

Run these commands from the Laravel project. The generator’s MCP integration depends on laravel/mcp; the author says that package requires Laravel 12.41 or later. Check the project’s installed versions and the package’s current documentation before installing: the example is a documented pattern, not a guarantee that every Laravel or client version is compatible.

The author describes the generator’s v4 line as supporting Laravel 12 and 13, while Laravel 10 and 11 remain on the 3.x line. Those are package-line compatibility notes, distinct from the MCP dependency’s Laravel 12.41 minimum. A project on Laravel 10 or 11 should not assume that the v4 MCP setup applies to it.

What the safeguards do—and do not do

According to the author, the package tracks generated files in .api-generator/manifest.json. If a tracked file has been changed by hand, it is reported as edited and is kept by generate-api by default. The author also states: “The server never deletes a file and never runs a migration.” In practice, force-overwriting edited files, deleting an entity, and running migrations remain command-line actions.

These are documented behaviors of this package, not a general security guarantee for MCP or coding agents. Review the planned changes and generated diff, and treat destructive or environment-changing commands as separate decisions. The preview stage is valuable precisely because generation is not a substitute for code review.

Where manual follow-up may still be needed

Adding fields does not cover every artifact

The author notes that add-fields does not automatically update the DTO. In the reported demo, the DTO was patched manually, and the author identified automatic DTO handling as a follow-up fix. Teams using this action should check DTOs and any other project-specific files rather than assuming every affected layer is updated.

The generated architecture is opinionated

The generator uses a controller, service, and DTO structure. That can provide consistency for a project that wants those conventions, but it may not match every team’s architecture. The author says teams can publish and customize the package’s stubs; customization is therefore an option, not evidence that generated output will fit a codebase without adjustment.

Schema and existing-project fit still matter

The documented generation inputs include the package’s API schema and OpenAPI descriptions. Before asking an agent to generate a large set of files, verify that the proposed schema reflects the application’s actual relationships, validation rules, naming, and conventions. A clean plan can still describe the wrong design.

What the demo establishes

In the author’s library example, the plan covered four entities and 56 files, with no warnings; the author also reports that 62 tests passed in that demo. These are counts from one author-run demonstration, not independent benchmarks or general estimates of how many files or tests another project will produce. No independent named statistical study in the reviewed sources establishes productivity gains, code-quality improvements, or reliability rates.

The useful takeaway is narrower: the example shows a workflow in which an agent can request a plan and invoke package generation tools, while the developer retains review and command-line control over specified actions. It does not show that every generated API is correct or that the approach outperforms a particular manual workflow.

When this workflow is a good fit

  • You want an agent to use a project’s generator conventions rather than inventing CRUD files on each request.
  • You want a plan of expected file changes before generation and are prepared to review it.
  • Your Laravel version and installed MCP dependency meet the relevant compatibility requirements.
  • You are comfortable checking package-generated code, hand edits, and any manual follow-up—especially DTO changes after adding fields.

The package also has a Visual Studio Code workflow, but the MCP setup described here is specifically an agent-client integration through the Artisan command. The core value is not that an agent becomes autonomous; it is that generation can be routed through structured package tools with an explicit planning stage.
