A lab-on-skin patch can collect and analyze sweat while an athlete exercises, then send readings wirelessly to a smartphone. A 2016 research system was reported to measure several sweat biomarkers and water-loss rate, but the available evidence describes experimental monitoring—not a validated medical diagnostic or a general-purpose health check.
What “lab on skin” means
In this context, “lab on skin” is a flexible wearable patch that samples sweat and uses sensors to analyze it. The 2016 system described by Chemistry World also communicated wirelessly with external devices such as smartphones.

How the 2016 patch worked
Microfluidic channels directed sweat into four chambers. Each chamber contained a color-changing indicator designed to respond to an analyte. A phone camera and image-capture software supported colorimetric analysis, while the patch sent information wirelessly for readout.

These are measurements from the reported research system; they should not be treated as direct diagnoses of dehydration, illness, or athletic readiness.

What happened in the reported cycling test
Chemistry World reported that researchers tested the patches on the arms and backs of 12 riders during a 104 km bike race. The report says the sensors performed despite changes in temperature and humidity, and that participants reported no discomfort or patch detachment. Those observations concern this particular field test; they do not establish performance across athletes, sports, or conditions.
The news report identifies the underlying study as A. Koh and colleagues’ paper in Science Translational Medicine (DOI: 10.1126/scitranslmed.aaf2593). The full methods and results are not presented in the report, so the rider count and race distance alone cannot establish population-wide accuracy or clinical performance.
A separate sports sensor reported in 2025
A 2025 Talanta paper describes a different integrated sports lab-on-skin sensor. Its abstract reports wireless, on-body measurement of sweat sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), lactate, and initial sweat rate. The researchers tested physically trained and untrained groups at the same exercise intensity and assessed how water intake, breakfast, and exercise intensity influenced dehydration time and sweat measurements. These details describe that later study, not the 2016 patch.

A 2017 ACS Nano review discusses sweat diagnostics and other monitoring applications; it is background on the field, not evidence that either athlete sensor became a clinical or consumer product.
What the readings can—and cannot—tell an athlete
Sweat measurements can provide physiological information during exercise, but they are not automatically equivalent to measurements in blood or to a clinical assessment. The sources describing these patches do not establish diagnostic accuracy, authorization for medical use, or that a reading can replace clinical testing. A smartphone display does not change that evidence threshold.
These reports describe research devices. They do not establish that the 2016 or 2025 system is currently available as a retail wearable.

How to compare the two research systems
| Feature | 2016 patch | 2025 sports sensor |
|---|---|---|
| Reported measurements | Lactate, chloride, glucose, pH, and rate of water loss, according to Chemistry World. | Sodium (Na+), potassium, lactate, and initial sweat rate, according to the PubMed record for the 2025 paper. |
| Reported sensing and readout | Microfluidic sweat routing to four chambers with color-changing indicators; phone-camera colorimetric analysis and wireless communication, as reported by Chemistry World. | Wireless on-body measurement, as described in the 2025 paper’s abstract; the abstract does not state the same chamber-and-camera design. |
| Reported exercise context | 12 riders in a 104 km cycling race, according to Chemistry World. | Physically trained and untrained groups exercised at the same intensity; the abstract also describes assessing water intake, breakfast, and exercise intensity, according to the PubMed record. |
| Clinical validation or retail availability | Not established in the cited report. | Not established in the cited abstract. |
The table compares only what those reports describe. It does not imply that the sensors share a design, have equivalent performance, or can be purchased as consumer products.
