How a Home Network Shares Broadband With Your Devices

A home broadband network is the equipment and wired or Wi-Fi links that distribute an internet service to household devices.

A home broadband network is the equipment and connections inside a home that let household devices share an internet broadband service. The service brings internet access to the home; the home network distributes that connection to devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

What makes up a home broadband network?

A typical connection follows this path: the provider’s network reaches household access equipment, such as a modem or optical network terminal; a router or gateway then connects local devices using Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This is a useful model, not a required equipment list. Providers may combine modem and router functions in one gateway, and the appropriate access equipment depends on the connection technology and provider.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes a household modem or receiver as customer-premises equipment and a typical last connection point to the provider-managed network. From there, consumer devices connect through internal wiring or Wi-Fi. The FCC’s network illustration shows the distinction between the provider network and the household’s own connections.

How is broadband service different from the home network?

Broadband internet access is the service that provides access to internet endpoints. The home network is the local arrangement that shares that service among devices. A router is part of that arrangement; it is not the broadband subscription itself. The FCC’s example of fixed broadband describes a service delivered to a fixed endpoint using stationary equipment, such as a modem connecting a home router or another internet-access device to the internet. The FCC’s 2017 order gives examples of fixed broadband access technologies.

In the United States, the codified definition of broadband internet access service excludes dial-up service. That is a U.S. regulatory definition, not a universal definition for every country. It does not set a single speed threshold in the cited definition. The reproduced text of 47 CFR § 8.1 provides the definition; consult the official e-CFR for legal use.

Is Wi-Fi the same as broadband?

No. Wi-Fi is a wireless way for devices to connect to the home network. Broadband describes the internet access service coming into the home. That incoming service may use a different access technology, while devices inside the home use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both.

What do the main terms mean?

Term Role
Broadband internet access service The service that provides internet access over a wire or radio link.
Modem or other access equipment Connects the home to the provider’s access network; the equipment depends on the service and provider.
Router or gateway Connects local devices and shares the home connection. A gateway may combine router and access-equipment functions.
Wi-Fi or Ethernet Wireless or wired links between devices and the home network.

Which technologies can provide broadband to a home?

Fixed broadband can reach homes through cable, DSL, fiber, fixed wireless, or fixed satellite. These are access technologies: they describe how the service reaches the home, not how a phone, computer, or other device connects locally. The FCC lists these examples in its 2017 order on fixed broadband.

If you are identifying what equipment a particular home needs, the relevant questions are whether the equipment works with the provider and access technology, whether the provider supplies or rents it, whether modem and router functions are separate or combined, and whether local devices will connect by wire, Wi-Fi, or both. The definition alone does not mean a household needs to buy a new router.
