A research hydrogel can signal cocaine by turning clear: cocaine binds to aptamers that link the gel’s polymer chains, the links release, and the gel collapses. Researchers reported a visible result for as little as 20 nanograms of cocaine within 10 minutes under their study conditions. That finding describes a laboratory assay, not a validated consumer test.
How does the gel detect cocaine?
The gel contains polymer chains connected by aptamers—short nucleic-acid strands selected to bind a target molecule. In this design, the aptamers act as responsive links between the chains. When cocaine binds to them, the links let go; the network collapses and changes the appearance of the mixture. The cocaine itself does not turn clear. The clarity is the assay’s visual signal.

The 2010 paper by Zhi Zhu and colleagues, “An Aptamer Cross-Linked Hydrogel as a Colorimetric Platform for Visual Detection,” describes two ways to make that collapse visible:

- Enzyme and dye: Enzymes released from the gel break down a blue amylose-and-iodine dye, leaving the mixture colorless.
Both approaches turn a molecular binding event into a visible change; the readout depends on the gel’s design.

What performance did the study report?
Zhu and colleagues reported visual detection of cocaine at amounts as low as 20 ng within 10 minutes. Those figures describe the assay under the paper’s study conditions, not a guaranteed detection limit or turnaround time for field use, consumer testing, or different sample types. The reported visual result also should not be read as a quantitative measurement of how much cocaine is present.
Does this mean there is a consumer cocaine test?
No consumer-ready or currently commercial version of this specific hydrogel is established by the cited publications. The primary article presents a research platform. Lab-on-a-chip integration and adapting the design to other targets were described as possible directions, not as demonstrated commercial capabilities.

What the result does—and does not—show
- It shows: A target-responsive hydrogel can produce a visible signal when cocaine binds to its aptamer links, and the researchers demonstrated that approach in a laboratory assay.
- It does not establish: A field-validated or consumer test, performance on arbitrary real-world samples, regulatory approval, or a product currently available for purchase.
