A gecko-inspired dry adhesive can release an object when ultraviolet (UV) light makes its surface bend and peel away. When the light is removed, the material returns to a sticky state. The 2017 device was a laboratory prototype—not ordinary glue dissolving under light or a product shown to be commercially available.
How can light make an adhesive let go?
The 2017 prototype uses a reversible change in shape rather than a chemical breakdown. Its structure combines a liquid-crystal elastomer layer between two layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). One PDMS face has tiny mushroom-shaped structures modeled on the fibers on gecko toes.
The elastomer contains azobenzene, a molecule that responds to UV illumination. Under UV light, the molecule changes configuration and size, flexing the layered material. That movement peels the microstructured face away from the contacted surface, releasing the object. Once the UV is switched off, the material returns to a flatter, adhesive state. Chemistry World described the device and its mechanism in its 19 January 2017 report.

What did the 2017 demonstration show?
In the reported laboratory demonstration, the adhesive picked up and transported objects larger than its own adhesive area after an initial preload force of 6 mN. Examples included glass spheres, microscope slides and plastic Eppendorf tubes. Applying UV released the objects; switching was described as happening within seconds, but the report did not give a precise switching-time measurement.
The preload matters: the adhesive was not shown simply grabbing objects without pressure. Stanford researcher Elliot Hawkes raised questions about how quickly the grasp could be made and whether adhesion could be achieved with less preload. He noted that high preload can be problematic when handling delicate objects.

What are the limits of light-triggered release?
UV light has to reach the responsive adhesive for this release mechanism to work. A 2021 review notes that this can make UV-triggered debonding unsuitable for opaque substrates. That is a general constraint of light-triggered debonding approaches, not a reported test result for the specific 2017 prototype.
- Speed: The 2017 account says switching took seconds, but does not establish a precise release time or suitability for fast robotic grasping.
- Contact force: The demonstration required a 6 mN initial preload; the source does not establish performance at lower forces.
- Light access: The responsive region needs UV illumination, which may be difficult to deliver through or around opaque materials.
- Practical performance: The reported object examples establish a proof of concept, not general-purpose handling, durability, safety or commercial readiness.
How does the 2025 study differ?
A separate study published online on 26 March 2025 by Yue, Norikane and Nishibori describes a chemically crosslinked polymer film with a nanoscale layered structure. It expands and contracts reversibly under UV light, releases picked-up objects during illumination and regains adhesion when the light stops. The authors present it as a possible platform for light-controlled object transport and remote robotics.

The cited reports describe research materials, not a consumer product or a deployed robotic system. In 2017, researcher Emre Kizilkan described the work as a starting point and said the team wanted to optimize layer thicknesses and control the light-induced deformation for a possible light-driven locomoting robot. That is a proposed direction, not evidence of a finished robot.

Neither the 2017 report nor the 2025 study establishes consumer availability, product durability or a commercial application. The demonstrated result is narrower but useful: UV can reversibly alter the shape of certain microstructured or layered materials enough to release an object, with adhesion returning when illumination stops.
